Grandma Josefina gently guided Amari to sit beside her. There was still an empty seat, and it seemed only natural that Amari should take it.
But now, there was no space left beside her at all.
Amari felt a pang of discomfort, almost ready to rise and give up her spot out of courtesy. Yet, before she could even move, Grandma Josefina caught her hand and refused to let go. Her grip was firm, protective, and final.
Her sharp gaze landed on James. "If it weren't for the number of people watching," she muttered with restrained irritation, "I wouldn't even consider giving you space. Sit anywhere else you like."
Her voice carried the weight of authority, enough to make James' expression darken. He didn't argue, but the tension in his jaw spoke volumes.
