Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: Victoria Makes Her Move

There are mornings when the universe whispers.

And then there are mornings when it kicks down your front door wearing designer heels.

Mine began with pancakes.

I was standing in the kitchen attempting to flip one without creating modern art on the ceiling when Maria walked in.

"Mrs. Blackwood?"

"Hmm?"

She looked... nervous.

"Mrs. Victoria Blackwood is here."

The spatula slipped from my hand.

"...Excuse me?"

"She says she'd like to speak with you."

I looked toward the clock.

Nine in the morning.

Ethan had left nearly an hour earlier for an emergency board meeting. Harper was visiting friends out of town.

Which meant...

Victoria had made sure I'd be alone.

How thoughtful.

"I'll be right there."

Maria lingered.

"Would you like me to stay?"

I smiled appreciatively.

"No."

If Victoria had come looking for a fight, I wasn't about to hide behind the staff.

"I can handle her."

---

Victoria Blackwood stood in the living room like she'd personally designed it.

Elegant as always, dressed in a cream silk suit that probably cost more than my first apartment.

She didn't greet me.

She simply looked me over.

Her gaze lingered on my growing stomach.

"So."

She folded her gloved hands neatly.

"You're beginning to show."

I rested a protective hand over my belly.

"Babies do tend to grow."

Her expression didn't change.

"I imagine that's inconvenient."

I almost laughed.

"Inconvenient?"

"For everyone involved."

I raised an eyebrow.

"I'm sorry. Did you come here to congratulate me or audition for Disney's next villain?"

For the first time, something flickered across her face.

Not amusement.

Surprise.

Apparently no one usually spoke to Victoria Blackwood that way.

"I admire your confidence."

"I admire people who knock before trying to ruin someone's morning."

She ignored the comment.

"I'd like to discuss your future."

"My future?"

"Your future away from Ethan."

There it was.

No warm-up.

No pretending.

Straight to business.

Very Blackwood.

---

She opened the leather portfolio she'd brought with her and slid a thick envelope across the glass coffee table.

"I've established a trust."

I didn't touch it.

"It contains enough money for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life."

Still didn't touch it.

"There's also a townhouse in Boston."

Interesting.

"I've never been to Boston."

"You'll learn."

She continued as though discussing quarterly profits.

"The child will be provided for separately."

The room suddenly felt much colder.

I stared at her.

"What exactly are you proposing?"

"A divorce."

She said it so calmly.

"So... you're trying to buy me."

"I'm offering you freedom."

"I wasn't aware I was imprisoned."

"You are."

She leaned forward slightly.

"In a marriage that cannot possibly survive."

I smiled politely.

"You have an incredible gift."

"For what?"

"Making cruelty sound like wisdom."

---

Victoria crossed one elegant leg over the other.

"Ethan doesn't love you."

The words should have hurt.

Instead...

They made me strangely calm.

"Maybe."

I shrugged.

"Maybe not."

She frowned.

"That doesn't concern you?"

"It concerns me."

I smiled softly.

"But it doesn't concern you."

"He married you because of a scandal."

"I know."

"Because you became pregnant."

"I was there."

"He offered you a contract."

"I signed it."

Each answer seemed to frustrate her a little more.

"As soon as the child is born, this arrangement will collapse."

"Maybe."

"And when it does..."

She pushed the envelope closer.

"...you'll wish you'd accepted this."

I finally reached forward.

Her eyes brightened.

Until I picked up the envelope...

...and handed it straight back.

"I'm afraid you brought this to the wrong woman."

---

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"You haven't even looked inside."

"I don't need to."

"You have no idea how much money is in there."

I smiled.

"And you have no idea how little it matters."

Her expression hardened.

"Everyone has a price."

"No."

I stood.

"Everyone has something they refuse to sell."

She rose gracefully to meet me.

"And what would that be?"

"My self-respect."

I rested both hands over my stomach.

"And my child's future."

She scoffed.

"You honestly believe that child needs love more than security?"

I couldn't help laughing.

A genuine laugh.

"You really don't understand your own son."

"What does that mean?"

"It means Ethan has had money his entire life."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"And yet..."

"...the one thing he's always been starving for can't be deposited into a bank account."

For the first time...

Victoria looked shaken.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

---

"You think you've changed him."

Her voice was colder now.

"I think he's changing himself."

"He'll disappoint you."

"He already has."

She blinked.

"But he apologized."

Silence.

"He's learning."

Another silence.

"And unlike you..."

I smiled gently.

"...he actually wants to."

The room became unbearably still.

Victoria picked up the envelope.

"You've made a mistake."

"Maybe."

I walked toward the front door and opened it.

"But it'll be my mistake."

She stopped beside me.

"You have no idea what this family is capable of."

I met her gaze without flinching.

"No."

I admitted honestly.

"But neither do you."

Her eyes flickered with confusion.

I smiled.

"Because you've underestimated me since the day we met."

Victoria stepped into the hallway.

She paused before the elevator.

Without turning around, she said quietly,

"This isn't over."

The elevator doors slid open.

"I know."

She disappeared inside.

The doors closed.

---

I shut the front door and leaned against it, finally letting out the breath I'd been holding.

My knees felt weak.
