Chapter 4 - 4. Ability Failure

Alan says," Alan Walker."

And he continues asking," Why do you have a key? And what are you doing in my brother's home?" He had seen the woman at the parking lot of the police station, and she also entered the police station.

The woman's striking blue eyes flicker with something unreadable." From what I know, Marcus's brother's name isn't Alan."

Alan feels a strange pull from her gaze, and he wonders why he feels such attraction toward her. While he uses his ability on her." Not by blood." He then returned the question. "And you are?"

A smile appeared on her face, and Alan's eyes shifted to her red lips." Anastasia Steele. I am the prosecutor of your brother's case."

Alan is shocked, not by her family name. The Steele family is one of the richest families in the country, and in and around Brodwin City, their word carries more weight than the ministers from the capital. But it isn't a shocking thing for him, as which family she is doesn't matter to him.

Reincarnated into a new world, and with a golden finger, Alan thinks he is superior to the people in the world, and one day, he will reach the top of the world.

Her being a prosecutor and working on his brother's case is also not something that would shock. As he saw her enter in-depth of the police station and she had a key to enter his brother's house. He had thought, seeing her a few minutes ago, that she was related to law enforcement one way or another.

He is shocked because for the first time in his life, his ability didn't work on someone. The woman notices Alan's shocked expression." No, need to lock shock." She side-stepped him to enter his brother's room.

Alan cursed himself in his mind. She now thinks he is shocked because she is from the Steele family. He looks at her going through his brother's things." What are you looking for?"

She, without a glance toward him." Your brother told me he takes medicine before going to sleep. And the medicine knocks him out so that he sleeps like death, and during that time nothing can awake him."

Alan nods and starts searching. He recalls his brother saying that two days ago, when returning from a delivery at noon picked up Sofia in front of the hospital. And that day before going to sleep, as always, he took his medicine that helps him fall asleep.

Marcus is a very light sleeper, and a faint noise can wake him up. So, he takes medicine to sleep, as during work, he doesn't feel tired while driving the truck.

Yesterday, when he woke up at dawn, he didn't find Sofia in the house. As he had work an hour later, he left without contacting her as her phone was in his room. He had thought that at that time, Sofia had gone for a walk outside. And today he was taken by the police for half an hour after he returned home.

Alan finds the medicine and walks up to her." This is the medicine."

She takes the bottle and reads the name.

Alan asks," With this, can the innocence of my brother be proven?"

She looks at his face and shakes her head." A day has passed, and now no traces of this medicine would remain in her body."

Alan frowns." Then why did you need the medicine?"

She says," I will still check his body."

Alan nods.

She starts walking toward the front door of the house. Then suddenly stops." The evidence is still against your brother. So, if he did it, then tell him to plead guilty; otherwise, when I take him to court the day after tomorrow, then…"

She doesn't continue, but Alan understands what she's going to say." My brother is not a killer."

She shrugs." Then let the court decide." She walks out of the house.

Alan stands there for a moment, thinking he needs to find evidence proving that Marcus is not the killer.

Or something that will cast enough suspicion for the judge to wonder that Marcus mightn't be the killer. It will not prove his brother is the killer, but extend the time for him to search for the real killer.

The next moment, Alan leaves from the back door to enter the woods behind his brother's home. He wants to discover where the stench leads to which may provide evidence that would prove Marcus's innocence.

The woods were merely a small patch of trees, a natural divide between the backs of houses. Alan followed the sickening scent deeper, pushing through the undergrowth until the odour abruptly vanished near the murky shores of Lake Haven.

He takes out his phone, and before he can activate the mobile's flashlight. He feels a drop of water fall on his cheek, and the next moment he is drenched by the sudden downpour. He sprints toward the direction of a hotel nearby.

West Haven, 18th March, 501.

The next day, Alan, standing on his room's balcony, looks at the downpour." Looks like I have to train in the hotel's gym." He sighs.

He prefers to train his body in a secluded place outside in nature, away from people's eyes.

After breaking through his physical limit multiple times, he made his body stronger than most people. So, in the gym, he has to be careful while exercising so that he avoids unwarranted attention on himself when he is still weak.

Alan trains in a gym, miles away in another town. A woman is on her usual jog inside the town's park.

Her eyes idly scan her surroundings as she jogs, and she notices someone sitting on the bench by the pond.

She stops as the figure looks familiar.

She squints her eyes while walking closer to the woman. Recognition dawns on her face; she calls out softly," Mira."

Getting no reaction from Mira, she calls out loudly," Mira! Mira!"

Wondering if Mira has fallen asleep on the bench. She puts her hand on Mira's shoulder from behind.

When Mira remains motionless, she becomes certain that Mira is sleeping.

To wake her up, she gives a gentle nudge, expecting Mira to wake up, but instead, Mira tumbles unexpectedly into the chilling pond with a splash.

She shrieks," Mira." Runs toward the edge of the pond and pulls Mira to the shore before the waves drag her away.

Even then, Mira didn't react. She realised then that Mira's heart under her palm is not moving. With trembling hand, she checks for her pulse- nothing. Overwhelmed by shock and terror, she pulls out her phone and dials,"1-1-1."

Alan steps outside his room, wondering if he should walk back to his brother's home for his car or take a cab. When he turns around to lock his room door.

The door to the room facing him opens, and a familiar scent comes to his nose. After locking his door, he turns around to see the woman who now comes to his mind every few minutes. He doesn't know if it is because he is attracted to her beauty or that he cannot peek into her thoughts.

Today, she is dressed in a peach-colour suit that accentuates her figure.

"Are you following me?" she asks, her voice cool.

Alan scoffs, a short dismissive sound, and walks toward the lift without answering. He enters the lift and presses the button for the ground floor when she saunters inside the lift.

"You didn't answer my question?"

Alan glances at her." What made you think I was following you?"

Anastasia says after a moment." I am beautiful, and my family name is Steele."

Alan smiles at her." It could be I was following, or the world led me to you. A sudden rain let me scramble to the nearest hotel I could find." Alan steps outside the lift.

He enters the diner, sits at a table, and Anastasia follows behind him to sit opposite him." Are you saying the world led you to me?"

Alan says," Something along the line." He turns his attention to the waiter who arrives at their table. Both ordered their breakfast.

The waiter walked away with their order. Anastasia looks at him, tilting her head to one side." Why would the rain matter if you were inside your car?"

Alan gets an idea." My car is at Marcus's driveaway. If you don't believe you can drive me there."

Anastasia smiles at him, and Alan's heart starts beating at a fast speed. She says," Nice try." Their conversation is cut short as Anastasia gets a call. She walks away to take the call while the waiter arrives with their food.

Alan starts eating, and when Anastasia returns, he is halfway through his food. After finishing, he says," Bye," and turns to walk away. At that moment, Anastasia says," The bloodstain found in your brother's bathroom matched Sofia's DNA."

Alan merely glances at her, his expression unreadable, and starts walking. Today, he has to retrieve his car and check the place where Sofia's body parts were found. Except are one leg and her head, all her body parts have been found.
