Chapter 2 - Desperation.

Florian looks at his men and snaps his fingers. They start beating Lars, kicking him to the ground until he can barely move.

Lars lies on the floor, coughing with a bloody mouth, begging them to stop."Please, stop… I can't breathe properly." Cough, cough!

"Stop," Florian commands, and his men obey. He then turns to Lars."I wish it ended here and we could have a fresh start. But you stole a lot of money, and Mr. Abraham doesn't like that. Well, no one would."

He points toward a table in the shadows."You see that table over there?" Lars looks. The lights come on, and he sees his daughter lying on it."Abraham always says people should be reasoned with first, but I'm not Abraham… I believe people only learn through actions."

"Please, don't hurt my daughter. I'm begging you. Do whatever you want to me, but don't touch her," Lars pleads desperately.

"HAHAHAHA! I love seeing that desperate look. How does it feel when you're about to lose everything?" Florian kneels and grabs Lars by the hair.

Rachel and another of Florian's men approach the table where Jenny lies asleep. Lars pleads with them to stop.

"She's just a child! Tell me what I need to do to fix this!"

Still holding Lars by the hair, Florian says,"Finally, you're talking. Abraham wants all the money back."

"Fine! I'll give it back—" Lars is interrupted.

"Plus 100% interest. You stole 10 million, so you owe 20 million. And you're lucky it's already June."

"But that's impossible… How am I supposed to get that?" Cough!

Tired of the conversation, Florian smashes Lars' face into the floor."That's your problem, Lars. You should've thought of that before trying to play with us."He stands and walks toward the table.

Lars is overwhelmed. Any wrong move could mean his daughter's death.

"So, what's your answer? If you don't say something in the next 5 seconds, I won't be responsible for what happens.5… 4… 3…"

How the hell am I supposed to get that kind of money in 6 months?! Lars thinks, panicking as Florian continues counting.

Just as Lars is about to respond, Florian's phone rings. He answers and begins arguing with someone about a job gone wrong. A few minutes later, he hangs up.

"Damn it, if you're not constantly watching these bugs, they screw everything up. Now, where was I?" He scratches his head, thinking."Oh right—1. You didn't answer. I thought your daughter meant everything to you."

"What are you talking about? I was about to answer when your phone rang!" Lars struggles to move but can't. His ribs are fractured, and every movement is agony.

"If my daughter were in danger, I wouldn't have hesitated. Besides, I didn't hear anything," Florian says loudly, then turns to his men."You guys hear anything?"

Everyone in the warehouse replies, "No, nothing, sir."

"You heard them. Hey, bring Lars over and set him in front of the table, like the guest of honor at a lovely dinner."

Florian's men pick Lars up and place him in front of the table. He looks at his daughter, who's still sound asleep.

Rachel, standing beside the table, opens a briefcase. Lars sees her pull out a syringe.

"What the hell are you doing, bitch?! Don't touch her!"

"I told you, Lars. I'm a man of action, even when it comes to children." Rachel picks up a small vial and draws the liquid into the syringe.

Tears streaming down his face, Lars pleads,"Please, Florian, don't hurt my daughter. I swear I was going to answer. Florian, listen to me…"

Florian ignores him and walks over to Rachel.

Rachel injects Jenny with the liquid, and then everyone leaves the warehouse—except Florian and Rachel.

Lars screams,"What did you do?! Florian, what the hell did you do?!" Cough, cough!

Rachel packs the supplies into the briefcase. She looks at Lars and says,"You didn't answer, dumbass. What did you think would happen?"

Lars looks at his daughter, then back at Rachel."You bitch! What did you do?!"

"Her life depends on you now," she replies.

"What the hell are you saying, Rachel?!"

"You heard her," says Florian. "We injected her with a toxin that'll activate in a few hours. If you don't do anything, the girl will suffocate and die."

"What the hell are you saying, asshole?!" Florian and Rachel leave the warehouse.

Lars, furious, yells,"I swear I'll kill you! You'll regret this, you bastards!"

Don't make promises you can't keep, idiot, Florian thinks as he lights a cigarette and raises a hand in farewell.

Florian's men get in their vehicles and drive toward the city. One of them takes Lars' car. On the way, Lars' phone rings. The screen reads "MOM." The man tosses it off a bridge.

Lars spends hours trying to break free but fails. By nightfall, slipping in and out of consciousness, he hears two girls talking nearby.

"Hey, do you know why we're going to Gabriel's house?"

"No, do you?"

"Because he's going to be a dad! Isn't that exciting? He told me this morning."

"He didn't tell me anything! That jerk… I'm always the last to know. And you, Camile, didn't say anything even though we were together all day."

"But Hanna, you saw me running around at the hospital all day!"

"Yeah, but you were more focused on Johan than anything else."

"Ugh, you're so annoying! There's nothing going on with him anymore!"

Hearing their voices, Lars tries to scream for help, but he's too weak. The girls don't hear him and keep walking.

"Please, help! My daughter… she needs help…" His voice breaks, and he loses consciousness again.

Later, Lars barely wakes to see a man in a suit checking Jenny's pulse. The man turns and sees that Lars is alive. He takes both Lars and Jenny, puts them in the car trunk, and drives away.

As the man drives, he mutters,Damn it, Florian… the things I do to clean up your messes. He stops at a bridge and makes a call.

"I checked what Florian did. That bastard killed a child. I never thought he'd go this far when we went to grab Lars' daughter." It's the man Jenny knows—Johan.

The man on the phone is frustrated.

"That idiot Florian always does whatever he wants. I told him just to scare Lars, not do this. I'll talk to him. Johan, what about Lars?"

Johan steps out of the car and approaches the bridge's edge."He's barely alive. And I'm sick of cleaning up that idiot's messes. Next time, someone else can do it."

The man on the phone is sitting by a fireplace, sipping wine."I'll handle Florian. You just deal with Lars. See you." He hangs up.

Johan opens the car trunk."Lars, why did you do all this? I actually liked you friend… but orders are orders."He pulls a pistol from the back of his waistband.

Lars wakes again and sees a man talking to him. That guy… that's Johan. Where am I? Where's my daughter?!

"My daughter—where is she? Tell me!" Lars begs, barely able to speak.

Johan says nothing. He lifts Lars and props him up against a metal column on the bridge. Then he steps back and raises the pistol, aiming.

But he hesitates. He walks back toward Lars."You know… you helped me and my family a lot. Even though you screwed up, I don't want to be the one who kills you. If you survive this, get as far away as possible. You'll never be safe here again."

"Wait… I asked you… where is my daughter?" Cough!

Johan looks at the ground, then back at Lars."I'm really sorry. I couldn't do anything."

He throws Lars off the bridge.
