Chapter 19 - Chapter Nineteen: Bastard

"Su Rui, your acting might fool the whole world—

But it won't fool me."

The words hit her like a steel rod straight to the chest.

He said her name.

Her real name.

Su Rui stood frozen.

She never expected anyone to recognize her in this body.

And she definitely didn't expect that person to be Shen Yichen.

It was like a dam broke inside her.

Shock. Panic. Embarrassment. A strange, sudden wave of emotion that almost—almost—felt like being moved.

She lowered her head, forcing herself to breathe.

She was an actress.

A professional.

And a professional never breaks character.

She took a deep breath, and in one swift (and slightly awkward) motion, she stood up—

Her movements were heavier now, rougher than what she was used to, but she slapped on a wide-eyed, flustered expression and blurted:

"President Shen, what are you talking about? Su Rui's a big-time celebrity! I'm just a cleaning lady—me, play her? That's hilarious!"

She patted her thick waist with both hands, laughing nervously. "Look at me—what star has arms like tree trunks?"

"If I didn't scrub toilets for a living, I'd be on stage, right?"

She laughed again, loud and too bright. "Please don't scare me like that—I've got a weak heart!"

Shen Yichen didn't say a word.

He just looked at her.

Calm. Quiet.

His eyes unreadable, like a page she didn't dare turn.

Su Rui panicked.

She grabbed the handle of the cleaning cart.

"I—I'd better go. Still got meeting rooms to clean!"

And with that, she pushed the cart out of the office at top speed, not daring to glance back once.

Inside the elevator, her heart was still pounding like a drum.

"Su Rui."

He really called her by that name.

She clutched her chest as if she could stop her heart from leaping out of her throat.

"That… that bastard!" she muttered under her breath, jaw clenched tight.

Shen Yichen.

What the hell did he know?

What did he mean by that?

Why was it that, no matter how far she tried to run, no matter how perfectly she acted, he only needed one sentence to ruin everything?

She had promised herself she'd play the role flawlessly.

And now look at her—falling apart after just one encounter.

The elevator doors opened. She straightened her back and stepped out.

But in her heart, she knew—

This performance was already slipping out of her control.
