Chapter 35 - Chapter Thirty Five: Absurdity

Li Kai listened to the details Su Rui recited—every single one was spot on, even down to the exact tone he remembered from his mother.

His frown deepened, and a flicker of awkwardness passed through his eyes. After all, she had even mentioned… the birthmark hidden on his backside.

"If you say you're not my mom, then how do you know all this?" His voice was a little stiff, as if he were deliberately trying to cover up his discomfort.

Su Rui was momentarily at a loss for words. Since there was no way to avoid it… she might as well be honest.

She took a breath, forcing her emotions to steady, and when her gaze met his, her expression softened.

"Li Kai, could you go put on some clothes first? Then we can sit down and talk this through, properly."

The boy's eyes lingered on her for a few seconds, probing, as if trying to see through her. In the end, he gave a quiet, "Alright."

He turned, closed the door, and left her waiting outside.

The moment the door shut, the luggage in her hand seemed to grow heavier. Leaning back against the wall, her mind began to play through the absurd events of the past month at high speed—

From walking the red carpet under a thousand flashing lights, to waking up with a mop in her hands, scrubbing the carpet as a cleaner;

Even more ridiculous, the cleaning job just happened to be at her ex-husband's company;

She had to keep her head down, wiping desks and emptying trash for people who had once treated her with deference;

She'd even stepped in to dance with Lin Yueying's idol, fulfilling the woman's long-buried dream;

Then came the doctor's cold, clinical words—stomach cancer;

Gossip swirled around her, making her the village's after-dinner entertainment;

Until she learned—if she could fulfill three wishes for Lin Yueying, she might return to her own body…

And now, the plot had spun out of control yet again.

She suddenly had a son, and a daughter she had only heard of but never met. As for how old the girl was? She had absolutely no idea.

It was all a hundred times more absurd than any melodrama.

When other people traveled through time, they became wealthy heiresses or darlings of fate; she, on the other hand—had ended up as the most inconspicuous cleaner in her ex-husband's company.

It was… so absurd she almost wanted to laugh, yet couldn't.

She lowered her head, let out a soft breath, and her lips curved into a faint, helpless smile.

Just then, the door creaked open.

Li Kai stood there, freshly changed, beads of water still clinging to his hair. The clean lines of his young face made the sharpness in his gaze stand out even more.

He stood in the doorway, looking at her with a gaze that was complicated, scrutinizing—

At the woman who was smiling wryly… yet looked exactly like his mother.
