Chapter 19 - Taker City

At the White House, Dodge is looking at the picture of himself, Jennifer and a baby Rachel.

Dodge: I'm sorry, Jennifer.

After a day of traveling, with Tristian, Iris and Leon in tow, the group finally arrives at Taker city, the post-apocalyptic city of Washington D.C.

Kyle: Taker City.

Shortly after, the survivors then begin to form a plan to rescue Caleb.

Kyle: At sundown, we fire a round into the air. That'll draw two of the Takers out on patrol...then once it gets dark enough that the rooftop sniper can't see us, we go in. We cut the locks on one of the stairways, take it to the forth floor of the white house. Kyle, I'll open the door, Shawn takes the guard out.

Marcus: How?

Kyle looks up at Marcus.

Kyle: He snaps his neck. This is all about us doing this quiet, keeping the upper hand. They think we're dead. They're not expecting us. From there, we spread out. Knives, machetes and silencers. We need to be fast.

Kyle draws an outlook of the white house on the ground.

Kyle: James, you and Cassandra, take the defenses down. Rocky, Marcus, take them. Margaret, Joseph, Jenny, you three proved sniper fire from the east. Sarah, Rachel, Abigail, you two take care of whoever's in the kitchen. I'll take care of Dodge.

Rachel: You're going to kill my Dad?

Kyle: No....I'll capture him. If they're smart, the rest of them will surrender. Then it'll be nine on four. ten on four once we get a gun to Caleb.

Rocky: We can take em.

Marcus: That's best case. What's worst case, though? All it takes is one of those goddamn Takers going down the wrong hall at the wrong time. Then it's not quiet. All hell breaks loose. We're gonna have a lot of people in the crossfire.

James: and a lot of bullets flying around.

Cassandra: If that's what it takes to get Caleb back.

Joseph: Marcus has a point, though.

Marcus: It's not. Think about it. We got three of Dodge's people out here, alive for a trade. Three for one. No one gets killed. Their people for ours. Everyone lives.

Kyle stands up.

Kyle: Yeah, I get it...but it might work....but this will work.

Shawn: Nah....that can work, too.

Shawn turns to Rachel.

Shawn: You said your Dad is just trying to keep everyone alive, right?

Rachel: Right. Trying, but failing.

Shawn: We've got the leverage. Three people for one. He doesn't really have a choice. Everyone lives.

Shawn points to Marcus.

Shawn: Like he said.

Kyle, Rocky, Shawn and James enter the other room, grabbing Tristian, Iris and Leon, who are tied up. James hands the trio a bag of food and some bottles of water.

Kyle: You guys should eat. It's going to be a long day.

Tristian: Can I ask you something? The Leader? The way you talk...the way you carry yourself. Were you a soldier? Zeus Corps?

Kyle stares at Tristian.

Tristian: Believe or not, buddy. I was, too. Trust me. I hated a piece of shit like Ryder. I didn't serve under him, but the shit he did....Union City. It was fucked up.

Rachel whispers to Kyle.

Rachel: That's Tristian. He's one of the good ones. He never really liked my Dad.

Outside, Cassandra and James are putting stuff away in their trunk as Cassandra cuts herself by accident on a shard. Cassandra then grabs a crowbar then throws it to the ground. James sighs, then places his hand on the car, looking firm.

James: We're still married, right?

Cassandra: Right...

James: So I'm going to say it and then you're going to listen to me, alright? Then when you're ready. You talk to me. She wouldn't want this for you. She loved you. You saw that. You did your best...and you hold onto your anger all you want, but you should hold onto the good memories.

Cassandra closes her eyes and shakes her head.

Cassandra: I should've tried to save her.

James: We all should've tried.....but she would want you to still live. Cassandra, I am still here.

Cassandra turns to James, then hugs him.

Cassandra turns to James, then hugs him. In their building hideout, Margaret, Marcus, Jenny and Joseph bring in supplies as Kyle is speaking with Tristian, who is tied up against the pole.

Tristian: He'll tell you he won't make a deal. He won't compromise...but if his daughter is involved, he will. He always does. Just-just know who you're dealing with.

Kyle: We'll probably be heading out in the next few minutes. Do you need anything?

Tristian: Some water.

Kyle nods.

James: Of course.

Kyle stands up.

Kyle: Thanks, Tristian....You're still a soldier. I can tell.

Tristian: No. No, the real ones who did some actual good are dead.

Later on, Tristian, who is tied up, looks down.

Tristian: Fuck....

Cassandra looks back at Tristian and stands up, before approaching Tristian, who looks up.

Tristian: I'll be okay.

Cassandra: So will I.

Tristian: This building...I used to come here a lot on my patrols in the city...the parking lot over there to the east, I...I saw a Skinner....I saw one of the Skinners and I knew him...

Cassandra brings up a block of cement and sits on it.

Tristian: His name was Attila. We joined the Takers together. We both did when the world got to shit. We were good friends. Served together. Ate together. Best friend I had. I was supposed to get the last squad of Takers to the zone and Dodge pulled me back. Had someone he could really trust and he put Attila in charge of it instead. These people were gonna be saved and I was fucking pissed. He's out there, stuck on the asphalt, melted. All I was thinking 'that could've been me.' 'it should've been me. He saved my fucking life.' He's out there like some goddamn scarecrow when he deserved more.

Cassandra: Then let's make sure he does. Do you remember where he was?

Tristian looks down.

Tristian: Really?

Cassandra: We're not going out there, but I'm a good archer. Show me.

Tristian nods.

Tristian: Okay.

Tristian nods to the side of the building.

Tristian: North side of the building. You can see him there.

Tristian leads Cassandra to the side of the building as Tristian looks outside to search for his dead comrade.

Cassandra: You see him?

Tristian: Yeah...about 30 yards from the SUV. There's a fucked up wall there.

Tristian backs away as Cassandra arms her bow and arrow and aims out the window.

Tristian: He's leaning against it.

Cassandra: Yeah....I see him. Are you sure that's him?

Suddenly, Tristian runs and kicks Cassandra into the glass window, knocking her out as Tristian then runs for the exit with his hands tied behind his back. Outside, Kyle sprints to chase down Tristian, who is trying to free himself from his bonds.

Tristian: Goddammit!

Tristian sprints away from Kyle.

Kyle: Stop! Stop! I won't say it again, man.

Tristian disobeys Kyle's demands and continues running.

Kyle: Fuck it.

Kyle pulls out his pistol and shoots Tristian in the back. Tristian falls on the ground, unable to move.

Tristian: Agh....ughn....Fuck...

Kyle approaches Tristian and puts his pistol away.

Tristian: You motherfucker. You motherfucker....You crazy motherfucker....I think...I think you shot me in the spine...I can't feel my legs. You fucking paralyzed me.

Kyle: It didn't have to be like this. All you had to do was stop, man. Why'd you make shit difficult?

Tristian: Cause I don't fucking know you...but I'm getting the idea of the kind of man you are.

Kyle: You just had to stop.

Tristian: Take me back. Take me back to Taker base. I did it for your friend, man.

Kyle: After this, hell no. You're not coming back, Tristian.

Tristian: You think you can take on Dodge, kid? You can't....He's not gonna stop until he has his daughter.

Kyle aims his pistol at Tristian.

Tristian: You're gonna die....all of you are gonna—

Kyle executes Tristian, before lending down his pistol.

Kyle: Shut the fuck up.

Kyle walks back to his hideout in Taker city.
