Chapter 40 - SDOPM: Chapter 40

"Hello, please wait!"

Metal Bat, pushing his sister's wheelchair, hurried to catch up with Kaito Ren.

"Hmm? It's you?"

Kaito Ren stopped and turned, seeing Metal Bat and his sister approaching.

"Savior, we meet again!"

Metal Bat suddenly shouted, bowing deeply and respectfully to Kaito Ren. This startled not only Kaito Ren but also nearby passersby, who all cast curious glances.

Feeling their stares, Kaito Ren quickly turned away, pretending not to recognize Metal Bat.

"Brother, really? What are you doing?!"

Zenko facepalmed, tugging at his sleeve.

"I'm greeting our savior! What's wrong with that?!"

Metal Bat scratched his head, questioning his sister.

"There's a right way to greet someone, and then there's your way. Get over here."

Zenko waved him away, clearly exasperated by her brother's simplemindedness.

"Big brother is sorry. He was a bit impulsive. Did we bother you?"

Zenko smiled sweetly and politely.

"No."

Kaito Ren returned the smile. He hadn't properly observed Zenko before due to her injuries and the urgency of the situation.

Now, he could see why Metal Bat was so protective. Zenko was incredibly cute, like a porcelain doll. If she were his sister, he'd be a devoted brother too—a super devoted brother!

"Thank you for saving me and my brother. If it weren't for you, we…"

Zenko's face showed a flicker of fear. She still had nightmares about being captured by the monster.

"It's nothing. I'm sure others would have helped too."

Kaito Ren shrugged. For him, it was just about gaining stats; saving them was incidental.

"Others? They'd stay far away, afraid of getting involved. They wouldn't help."

Zenko scoffed, remembering the numerous times she'd pleaded for help, only to be ignored by onlookers.

"Maybe you didn't encounter any heroes. Heroes would definitely help."

Kaito Ren explained. While some heroes were opportunistic, others genuinely dedicated themselves to saving people.

"Heroes? People who fight monsters like you?"

Zenko tilted her head, having heard nurses mention them but never actually seeing one.

"Yes."

Kaito Ren nodded; that was a fair description of the Hero Association.

"Why aren't you two at the hospital?"

Kaito Ren frowned, noticing Zenko's bandaged limbs. She shouldn't be leaving the hospital.

"It's the medical bills…"

Metal Bat started to explain but was interrupted by Zenko's look. She regained her sweet demeanor.

"The hospital was boring, so we wanted to go for a walk."

Kaito Ren's face twitched. He understood; the medical bills were the problem; they'd likely been discharged.

He sighed; it seemed he wouldn't be keeping this money. He considered visiting them later. Why did something always happen whenever he was about to get some money? Was he cursed?

"Big brother, we don't know your name yet. I'm Zenko."

Zenko playfully stuck out her tongue, realizing she hadn't introduced herself.

"I'm Kaito Ren."

"Kaito Ren? Can I call you Kaito-nii?"

Zenko's large, watery eyes held anticipation.

"Sure."

It was just a name; Kaito Ren didn't mind.

"Kaito-nii, where do you live? Nearby?"

Zenko asked curiously.

"Not far, at the Reserve Hero School."

Kaito Ren pointed to the school.

"Kaito-nii, is it true the school provides food and lodging?"

Zenko asked cautiously, trying to hide her true intentions.

"Yes, it's a good place to stay. Come visit when you're better."

Kaito Ren saw through her subtle inquiry.

"Kaito-nii, I was just asking."

Zenko, flustered at being seen through, quickly looked away.

Kaito Ren approached Metal Bat.

"Here, use this. If you need more, find me at room A102, Reserve Hero School."

Kaito Ren handed Metal Bat the 40,000 yen from selling the Crab Gauntlets.

"Kaito Ren, why are you giving us money? We just wanted to thank you!"

Metal Bat tried to return the money.

"Keep it. Consider it a loan. Zenko needs further treatment. What if something goes wrong, causing permanent damage? That's a lifelong issue!"

Kaito Ren's words stunned Metal Bat. He cared deeply for Zenko. If she suffered long-term damage due to a lack of proper treatment…

"Thank you!"

Metal Bat, deeply grateful, accepted the money.

"I have to go."

Kaito Ren waved goodbye, leaving a cool impression.

"Brother, you took Kaito-nii's money, right?"

Zenko looked at her brother.

"How… how did you know?"

Metal Bat was astonished. Kaito Ren had given him the money with his back turned. How did she know?

Zenko facepalmed at her simple-minded brother. Her limbs were injured, but her ears were perfectly fine!
