Whispers and Warnings

Papa Ejiro was a quiet man, but not blind. One rainy evening, Mama Ejiro brought up Favour's stubbornness again.

"That girl go shame us one day, I swear. Imagine she marry now and no fit even cook eba!"

Papa lowered his newspaper. "Calm down, Mama Favour. Maybe when she marry, sense go enter."

Mama folded her arms. "You dey deceive yourself. You don't know this your daughter. She go hide behind iPad until that house go burn down!"

Favour, overhearing from her room, turned up her music.

But something deep in her chest stirred. Shame? Annoyance? She didn't know. All she knew was she didn't want to be like her mother. She wanted more. The world. Education. Freedom.

And maybe… maybe love.
