Chapter 27 - Proving Thy Worth

That same morning, Rachel is visiting the comatose Abigail.

Rachel: So, Moses and I...we hung out with some of the kids here last night. They tried pulling a stupid fucking prank on us and I took it not to likely.....then afterwards....Moses and I....

Rachel bites her lips.

Rachel: We kinda almost had sex.....I mean...

Rache laughs.

Rachel: It just almost happened...I kinda wanted to....I mean....

Rachel frowns.

Rachel: Real reason why we didn't; part of me was thinking of the time I was almost raped by that asshole; Quinton.....thosepeople....I don't think they've had much experience in the wasteland like we have, Abigail...I want to get used to this...maybe it's time for a new change.

That same morning, Alicia is painting just as there is a knock on the door. She then sets her painting materials down and answers the door to find Rachel.

Rachel: Hi....you're the one who cut Kyle's hair, right?

Moses is sitting a the porch before Kale walks up to him, carrying a bowl of cooked eggs and bacon.

Kale: Sorry I'm late. How is it that you called this very early morning meeting and yet still I'm the one bringing you breakfast?

Kale hands Moses the bowl of breakfast, before sitting down.

Moses: You're a nice guy.

Kale: Evidence seems to point to that direction, son.

Moses smiles.

Kale: So, what's up?

Moses: Can we start meeting in the mornings?

Kale: So I can bring you cooked eggs and bacon and ask you why we're meeting so early?

Moses: Not necessarily....so you can show me how to build things.

Kale raises his head, intrigued.

Kale: You want to be an architect, son?

Moses: There are families within these walls....good people....and I have a girlfriend, so I want to make sure these walls stay up.

Kale: You think they could fall?

Moses: I think they could get pretty banged in by whatever or whoever wants this place....could be years from now or when I'm your age.

Kale chuckles.

Kale: Hey, watch it. I'll still be around when I'm your age, young man.

Moses: Well, I don't think it would hurt to know what you know. Pass it down onto the next generation. For the walls, the houses....new buildings. The people. Maybe one day I'll ask Rachel to marry me. Start a family of our own one day.

Kale: So you're in this for the long haul, huh?

Moses: Yes...I am.

Kale: Interesting....interesting, indeed. It's good to see young men your age wanting to do something positive, especially in this apocalypse.

Kale sets his bowl down and pulls out a notebook, writing down something.

Moses: What's that?

Kale: These are my chronicles.

Moses raises an eyebrow.

Kale: I chronicle everything that's happened in this apocalypse. Someone has to.

Moses looks down at the notebook, interested, before Kale takes out the pages he's written and then hands Moses the notebook.

Kale: Now, you should write everything down.

Moses: Really?

Kale: Mmm-hmm.

Moses takes the notebook.

Moses: Thank you, sir.....Why?

Kale: Well, hell, you said it yourself. The next generation will want to remember this community. The people. And you have a girlfriend now so say you and that girlfriend decide years from now to get serious and start a family. Your children will want to read how you helped this place rise from the ground up. Their children's children.

Moses nods in understanding.

Moses: Just so you know, Kale. I'm not in any rush to become a teenage dad. I'm only sixteen.

Kale laughs.

Kale: It's a figure of speech, son.

With her hair cut short, Rachel is walking in the street with her hands in her pockets, just as Moses calls out to her, rushing up to her and hugging her from behind.

Moses: Sup, girl!

Rachel: Careful, you saw the outburst I had with those kids after they did that!

Moses: Yeah, but you know me.

Rachel and Moses kiss. Moses steps back, noticing Rachel's haircut for the first time.

Moses: Whoa! Excuse me, miss. You look like my girlfriend....but with shorter hair.

Rachel: Yeah. Alicia did it for me this morning. You like it?

Moses: Love it. A new you.

Rachel beams.

Moses: Hey, last night wasn't too much was it?

Rachel: No....

Rachel tilts her head, noticing the notebook.

Rachel: Hey, what's that?

Moses: Oh, this? I got it from Kale this morning....I'm gonna be meeting him in the mornings so he can teach me to build things.

Rachel: Interesting...but that didn't explain the notebook.

Moses: Oh, he also says I should chronicle everything we do. Every day.

Moses smiles at Rachel.

Moses: Like the future Berrington will be....or our future together.

Rachel smiles. A voice then calls out to them.

Zeke: Hey, Moses! Rachel!

Zeke runs up to Rachel.

Zeke: Hey, guys. Nice haircut, Rachel.

Rachel: Thanks....What do you want?

Zeke: Well, I wanted to say I'm sorry for Morgan and Jason. They can be....a bit much. Jason's sometimes a dumbass. He's my best friend, so I can legally call him that, you know? We okay? Morgan can be a bit much.

Rachel sighs.

Rachel: It's okay, Zeke....I understand it was just a harmless prank. Sorry I freaked out like that.

Zeke nods then turns to Moses, offering a handshake.

Zeke: Cool, man?

Moses: Yeah....

Moses shakes Zeke's hand.

Moses: We cool.

Zeke: You know from last night, it sounds like you two have seen a lot out there.

Moses: We have....

Rachel: We lost a lot, too....

Moses: Well, we'll see you later, man.

Rachel and Moses walk away.

Zeke: Hey, guys.

Rachel: Yeah....

Zeke: We're doing a run for some chocolate later if you two want to come with us.

Rachel: A run? I thought the adults do the runs.

Zeke: Yeah, uh....sometimes us teens get bored and decide to take matters into our own hands....and most times the adults can't find chocolate, so...

Moses: You sneak out.

Zeke: Yeah....although, we're kids. We have skills. Dana's a real bad ass with a knife and Jason's useful with locks.

Rachel: And what are you useful for?

Zeke: I'm a scavenger for high tech stuff.

Rachel: So, you're the brains of the group. Sounds like and James would be great friends.

Zeke: Oh, yeah. I heard you have a smart guy on your group....

Moses: So, if we joined, it'd be just us eight?

Zeke: Six. Andrew and Mikayla don't really do these type of runs. Joshua would also be accompanying us.

Rachel: Morgan's brother-in-law? Why?

Zeke sighs.

Zeke: Besides my girlfriend, Joshua is the only one of the Burns family to give us a hand, plus he's lived in the area longer so he knows where the good shit is....and plus, honestly, it sounds like you know how to handle yourself.

Rachel and Moses ponder.

Zeke: What do you say? You in?

Rachel turns to Moses, then back at Zeke nod.

Rachel: Okay....

Moses: Sweet.

Zeke: Cool....

Zeke then high fives Rachel, but accidentally drops her bag.

Zeke: Shit!

Rachel: Dammit!

Zeke: Oh, let me. Please.....

Zeke's picks up Rachel's bag, and then her notebook, looking at a sketch of Abigail.

Zeke: Wow...this is really awesome, Rachel. Nice detail. You drew this?

Rachel: Yeah...

Zeke: Can I ask who this is?

Rachel and Moses gives a saddened look.

Rachel: That's Abigail....She was...a close friend of mine.

Zeke looks down.

Zeke: Oh, I'm sorry.

Rachel: It's okay....it...it happened....doesn't feel like a few days ago.

Zeke then closes the notebook and hands it to Rachel.

Zeke: Well, I'm sure she'd appreciate it. Here.

Rachel then grabs the note book, before Zeke walks off. Moses and Rachel then walk and hold hands. Meanwhile, Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah and Cassandra were in Laura's house, finding Alicia hanging up a painting of some kind.

Kyle: Morning, Alicia.

Alicia turns to the group.

Alicia: Good morning, guys.

Shawn: What are you doing here?

Alicia: Hanging up a picture that Laura wanted me to paint for her.

Cassandra: Wow....that looks amazing. You're very talented, Alicia.

Alicia: It's one of the many talents I have here.

James: Do you know where Laura is?

Alicia: I don't know, but I can go find her for you.

Sarah: Thanks, Alicia. That'd be nice.

Alicia walks out of the room as Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah and Cassandra look around until something catches Sarah's eye.

Sarah: Hmm....

Sarah walks across the room and picks up a framed picture.

Sarah: It's a picture of Laura, Kale and their kids.

Kyle walks up and sees the picture of a really young Burns family with Samantha and Morgan as toddlers.

James: They look really happy.

Laura walks into the office.

Laura: Admiring the old times, I see.

Shawn: Was this picture taken before or after the world fell apart?

Laura: After....

Laura takes the picture, smiles then puts it down.

James: So, you called the five of us here for a meeting.

Laura: Yes, I'd like to thank you all for participating in the party last night...and I also want to apologize to Kyle. I hope you know Peter didn't mean anything by his questions.

Kyle: It's okay...I...I understand we're new and he was just trying to get to know me....

Laura: So, how are you all adjusting to Berrington? Is everyone treating you alright?

Cassandra: Yeah, everyone definitely is....everyone's being nice.

Kyle: Honestly....this place is starting to feel like a great home.

Laura smiles.

Laura: That's great news, son. Thank you again for taking on the role of deputy for us.

Laura turns to Sarah.

Laura: And thank you for taking on the role of sheriff.

Sarah: Thank you for this opportunity, Laura.

Shawn: Surprised I'm not on this deputy and sheriff band wagon.

Laura: Because Shawn, I've finally found a job for you.

Shawn raises an eyebrow.

Laura: How's lead runner sound? Former Zeus Corps Sergeant. It'd be a perfect fit for you, son. Plus, I've got a solo runner out there that should be back in a few days. You two could be a great team.

Shawn turns to the others then back at Laura.

Shawn: Yes....I accept.

Laura: Excellent. Now, the reason why I called you all here is because we're doing something today.

Laura walks over to the large desk behind the five survivors.

Laura: This is the current state of our plan for gathering food.

Laura spins a map towards the survivors to look at.

Laura: Fortunately, we are starting to run short. It's getting harder and harder to feed everyone in this community.

Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah and Cassandra look down at the map. Kyle points out the train station.

Kyle: There's the train station.

James: The one we arrived at.

Sarah looks and points at the bottom right corner of the map, where a drawing of a small building was labeled Old Shack.

Sarah: What's this?

Laura: Oh, that's where we fish. Got a shack of storage right here....right along the river.

Laura points at the shack icon.

Laura: It's secure, mostly. Get the occasional infected or two that come by. Samantha and Kale are should be heading out there in a bit.

Laura points at the road pathway.

Laura: That's the only road that leads in or out of Berrington. We used to have signs that led people to the community, but I took them down. Wanted this place to be hard to find, unless we wanted good people, like you all, to be in it.

Kyle points at the section that was labeled traps.

Kyle: What's this trap area?

Laura looks at it.

Laura: Hunting grounds, more or less. Peter, Bryan and Connor build some traps out there to catch game. Those three are set to go check them today.

Sarah points at the section labeled hunting grounds.

Sarah: You guys sure do have a lot of forest that surrounds this place.

Laura: It's how we've kept ourselves from unwanted attention. Well, for the most part anyway. One more thing...see these red lines?

Laura points out the red lines.

Kyle: Yeah.

Laura: So everything is inside the safe zone. It's been getting more and more smaller over the past year, and food's becoming more scarce.

Sarah: Why not go outside it, then? We can handle anything outside.

Laura looks up at Sarah in shock then she hangs her head and shakes it.

Laura: I'm sorry. We can't. Whenever someone goes outside the safe zone, bad shit happens. People die or disappear. I just....look guys....I could use the help of strong survivors like yourselves. Taking of these people, including my family, it's not easy. I'm worried that if I don't figure something out....If I don't fix our food shortage....I can't lose anyone else. We've already lost so much.

James: We won't let that happen, Laura.

Cassandra: Yeah, you can count on us.

Laura: Thank you, guys. I appreciate this. Everyone's counting on me to step up. Be the leader they want me to be. My kids need inspiration as they might be running this place soon. Samantha, she's the oldest and she'll be taking my place one day with her husband and son.

Shawn: Alright; what do you need from us?

Laura: Peter, Connor, and Bryan are heading to the hunting grounds, looking for deer or rabbits. Samantha and Kale are going up the river to do some spear fishing. Both teams could use extra hands.

Kyle: Okay....I'll--

Sarah: Uh, Kyle, as the sheriff, I think you should stay within the walls and make sure Berrington is safe.

Kyle: What?

Shawn: Yeah, she's right. We can handle this. James and I will go hunting with the boys.

Sarah: I'll go fishing with Samantha and Kale.

Laura: Okay.

Laura pushes the map towards Sarah.

Laura: Here. Take this. I don't want you getting lost.

Sarah: Thanks.

Sarah takes the map.

Laura: We'll need all hands on deck if we're going to find any more food. Just remember to stay in the safe zone. I need everyone to come back home in one peace.

Sarah: Okay, thanks.

Kyle returns home to find Rachel grabbing her backpack. His eyes widen at her haircut.

Kyle: Holy shit. You cut your hair!

Rachel: Well...I figured if you can get all cleaned up, so can I.

Kyle: Hmm....I like it.

Kyle notices Rachel's backpack.

Kyle: Where are you going?

Rachel: Uh....out...

Kyle: Out where?

Rachel sighs.

Rachel: Okay, don't be mad, but you know those kids Moses and I hung out with last night?

Kyle: Yeah....

Rachel: Well, one of those kids invited us on a run. Just a small one.

Kyle: Define "small".

Rachel: Uh....just a chocolate run.

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: Well, honestly, I know you and know you can handle yourself....just be careful, okay?

Rachel: I will. Moses is going with me.

Kyle laughs.

Kyle: You really like him, don't you?

Rachel: I mean....yeah, I do....when do you know when you love a person?

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: When the time is right, of course....

Rachel laughs nervously, before she hugs Kyle, before heading out the door. Rachel and Moses then meets up with Zeke, Jason, Dana and Morgan. Joshua carrying a backpack of guns.

Morgan: Hey there, killer.

Zeke: Hey, thought you weren't gonna make it.

Moses: Well, we're here, aren't we?

Zeke clears his throat to Jason and Morgan, then darts his eyes at Rachel and Moses. Jason and Morgan share a look then sigh.

Morgan: Hey, sorry about last night...

Jason: Yeah, sorry. We didn't know you two got jumpy so easy.

Rachel and Moses nod.

Rachel: It's cool.

Morgan: Still wanna be friends?

Morgan offers a fistbump to Rachel and Moses, who looks at Zeke, then back at Morgan.

Moses: Sure.

Rachel then fist bumps Morgan.

Morgan: Alright!

Dana: Ah, there he is! The man with the goods!

Joshua approaches the teens, carrying a backpack full of guns.

Joshua: How is it I'm the only adult in this run and yet, I'm the one bringing y'all the firepower without my mom knowing?

Morgan: Cause we give you compliments like how you're the only cool Burns in the whole Burns family?

Joshua: Bzz! Wrong answer! It's cause I'd rather not deal with all the political bullshit in Berrington. I'd rather be a part of the fun...even if it is with a bunch of kids.

Rachel: Hey, Josh. Who's watching your son?

Josh: He's with your friend, Savannah.

Dana: Oh, yeah. That's the deaf girl, right?

Rachel: Yeah...

Josh: You know it's good to see my son making friends...even though she can't hear.

Jason: Uh-huh. Can we have our goods please?

Jason then hands Rachel, Moses, Zeke, Morgan, Dana and Jason handguns and knives. Dana then nods to Rachel.

Dana: Hey, new blood. You wanna see a trick?

Dana then flips her knife around in a pretty cool fashion.

Morgan: Pretty badass, huh? That's how you fuck up some infected and still look like bad ass.

Rachel and Moses shake their head, impressed.

Rachel: Hmmm....not bad.

Joshua: Alright, kids. Let's get going. Daylights burning.

Rachel, Moses, Zeke, Morgan, Jason and Joshua make their way through the woods. Meanwhile, Sarah, Samantha and Kale walk along the forest when Kale is speaking.

Kale: You know...I've been thinking...I wonder if you kids knew how grand the old world was...I mean, there's ton to explore.

Samantha: Why bother, Dad? It's not like there's anything worth seeing anymore.

Kale: Come on, Sammie. I'm sure there's plenty of good stuff to see.

Kale turns to Sarah.

Kale: Sarah, you've been around the wasteland for over a year, right?

Sarah: Yeah, but trust me; you don't want to see what's out there. We ran into fanatics, gangs.....and a lot worse.

Kale: Yeah, but Caleb mentioned he ran into a group that was friendly, right? In a forest.

Sarah: Yeah, but we had to fight through them, too.

The four make it to the building. Kale walks up to an old truck.

Kale: I wish this old rust bucket was still working. We could just jump in and start driving. We could take turns sitting in the back.

Samantha: There's something called "gas runs out eventually" Dad.

Kale: Be worth it, though.

Samantha rolls her eyes as she walks away.

Kale: Sarah, where would you go? Other than the places you've been to. If you could drive anywhere you wanted? If gas wasn't the issue.

Samantha: Or a busted fan belt, or flat tires, overheating engine-

Kale: Buzzkill.

Sarah: Well, when I was a kid, I'd want to drive up one of those long roads around the mountains. Follow it all the way to the top. Take Kyle and Rachel with me to see the view.

Kale: You could see the whole world up there, I bet.

Samantha: Yeah, get a nice damn view of the world while you die of hyperthermia. Sounds like that's one helluva dream.

Kale: C'mon, Samantha, would it kill you to live a little bit?

Samantha turns away from them as Kale turns back to Sarah.

Kale: I've lived here for most of my life. Hell, I'd say I know every inch of these woods. I'd kind of like to not know it so much.

Samantha: No point in visions, Dad. We've got real shit to do.

Kale: Yeah, I guess we should get to work on those fish. We've got spears inside the shack. C'mon.

Kale leads Sarah to the building.

Samantha: You go ahead. I'll stay out here.

Kale and Sarah go inside the shack.

Kale: Where the hell are those goddamned spears?

Kale looks around the shack as he turns to Sarah.

Kale: Hey, about my daughter...I'm sorry she's being a little mean. It's my fault.

Sarah: What do you mean?

Kale: Well, Alicia's sisters, Melanie and Colleen...they were killed by infected last year. My daughter was really close with Melanie....I was there when it happened and I think she blames me for it...I mean, how do you even apologize for something so fucked up?

Sarah: Well, she's your daughter. You should talk to her about it. I'm sure she'll listen.

Kale: Yeah, I've tried. I have. We all used to be family, but Joshua's in his own world not to mention Laura's busy running this place.....You know, she was kind of eying your friend, Margaret, last night at the party...but...she seemed uninterested.

Sarah: Uh...Margaret is dealing with a lot right now. She's not really in position to be with anyone right now.

Kale: She lost somebody out there.

Sarah frowns.

Sarah: Yeah...her boyfriend...and recently her brother.

Kale: If they were friends of yours, I bet they were good people.

Sarah: They were....

Sarah looks behind her and sees the spears. Kale walks over to them.

Kale: Well, ain't that something?

Outside Berrington, Rachel, Moses, Zeke, Morgan, Dana, Joshua and Jason finally arrive at their destination; an abandoned warehouse.

Moses: This is it?

Joshua: Yep.

Dana spots a door.

Dana: Looks like that door is our fastest way in and out of the warehouse.

Rachel: We should scan the place and look for all the exits, first. So there's a plan if shit goes south.

Morgan: We got one. It's called going out the front door.

Suddenly, an infected appears as Morgan pulls out her knife, but Rachel raises her hand.

Rachel: I got this.

Rachel kicks the infected in the leg, before stabbing it in the head. The others give impressed looks.

Zeke: Holy fuck....

Joshua: Shit....nice. I'm glad you can take care of yourself, kid.

Joshua then turns to Rachel.

Joshua: Rachel's right. We should look for an exit thoroughly. Make sure we know all our exits.

Morgan: We do, though.

Joshua: Just in case.

The group splits up; Rachel and Moses together checking one side of the warehouse with Zeke, Morgan, Jason, Dana and Joshua check the other side of the warehouse.

Moses: I'm glad we're doing this.....

Rachel: You're really looking forward to this run, huh?

Moses: I think that that Zeke boy has a crush on you. He keeps staring.

Rachel looks at Moses.

Rachel: Is that jealously I'm sensing?

Moses looks at Rachel with a smirk.

Moses: Of him? Please....can't say I blame him, though? You are a pretty girl.

Rachel: I can't either....those two boys must've never seen a pretty girl before besides Morgan and Dana...plus Andrew and Mikayla are a couple....it's fun watching boys having a dick measuring contest over girls.

The two teens then spot a horde of infected at the front of the warehouse, including a Zeus Corps military soldier with grenades strapped to him.

Rachel: Well, there goes the idea of the front.

At the river, Samantha is standing on a large boulder by the shoreline and stabs her spear into the water but she doesn't catch any fishes.

Samantha: Shit!

Sarah: Can I join you?

Samantha looks over and shrugs.

Samantha: Sure....Hey, check these guys over here.

Samantha points at the fishes that were trying to swim the other way.

Sarah: They're swimming against the current.

Samantha: Guess they don't realize it makes them easier targets.

Sarah grabs a spear and Samantha looks over at her.

Samantha: Go ahead and try. They're not running right now.

Sarah goes to stab in the water but doesn't get any fish while Kale shouts from the other side of the river.

Kale: Heads up, girls, the haul's not looking so good!

Samantha: Uh, yeah, okay!

Samantha then growls.

Samantha: Sometimes my dad gets on my last nerve, you know?

Sarah: Yeah, my dad was like that, too.

Samantha: I mean, it's-it's not like I hate him....

Sarah: Your Dad kinda thinks you hate him.

Sarah goes to stab the spear into the river and catches a fish. She smiles and places the fish in the bucket that was behind Samantha.

Samantha: Looks like they wisened up.. Catch anything?

Sarah: Sadly just one.

Samantha: Yeah, me to....

Samantha frowns.

Samantha: I don't know what the problem is between us.

Samantha turns to Sarah.

Samantha: With my Dad...I don't know why it's like this. Why is it so weird? I can never relax around him. It just keeps getting worse.

Sarah: Maybe it's because you blame him....about what happened to Melanie and Colleen.

Samantha: He tell you that?

Sarah shrugs.

Sarah: More or less....but your Dad wants to talk about it, you know.

Samantha: It's just...I feel guilty about the whole damn thing.

Sarah: Why?

Samantha: I was supposed to be out with the twins that day. I wanted to watch Seth so I asked Dad to cover for me...but even...I didn't even get to say goodbye. I...I wanted to talk to my Dad, to tell him it wasn't his fault for what happened....but every time I had tried, their faces keep burning in my mind. It was easier to just not talk about it.

Samantha and Sarah see Kale making her way to them.

Samantha: We should get going.

Samantha picks up the bucket and her and Sarah met up with Kale.

Sarah: We caught some, but not a lot.

Kale: I didn't catch anything. We should catch up with the boys. See if they had any better luck.

The three head off.

Samantha: The Northern Lights.

Kale: What?

Samantha: That's where I'd want to drive. If we took a road trip. Start driving till we hit the Northern Lights.

Kale smiles.

Kale: Yeah, sweetheart. That would be nice.

Samantha walks ahead of Sarah and Kale, who gives an appreciative and grateful nod. Back at the warehouse, Rachel, Moses, Morgan, Zeke, Danan, Jason and Joshua find a way into the warehouse through the back entrance. Rachel bangs on the wall, seeing if any infected are inside.

Rachel: Hold on. Just give it a second. It's a big fucking place.

Dana: Let's say that there are. Let's move. Let's be safe.

Joshua: Yeah. Let's.....

The group separates searching every aisle. In the midst of searching, Moses stops everyone.

Moses: Shh...quiet. Listen....

Infected are heard up ahead.

Rachel: They're stuck behind something.

Morgan: How do you know that?

Rachel: I don't....

The group then searches around, eventually finding a group of infected as well as a few Skinners behind a gate.

Joshua: Jesus....

Dana: Fuck!

Jason: Nice call, Rachel. You know your stuff.

Moses: It's what happens when you're out there like we have.

Joshua: Let's get to work, then.

Joshua turns to Zeke.

Joshua: Zeke, Dana, you're up.

Zeke: Yeah...

Zeke and Joshua separate and look for solar grids. Eventually, Hunter finds them.

Zeke: This is it. Right here.

Dana: Got em.

Joshua, Dana and Zeke cut open the boxes to present the grids.

Rachel: What the hell are those?

Joshua: Solar grids.

Moses: I thought this was a food run....

Dana: It is, but see say the adults can't find any good shit on their run. This'll make the adults see us as capable when we're finally eighteen and allowed to go on runs....

Joshua: and with me; it'll be easy to get you vouched.

Jason and Morgan look around, then behind Jason, an infected appears. Jason then turns and uses his silenced assault rifle to shoot at the infected. The shots draw the attention of the other survivors.

Rachel: Jason...wait til it's closer to you.

Jason: I got this.

Jason continues to shoot at the infected, but after Rachel takes a closer look, it is revealed to be the infected Zeus Corps Soldier that had grenades on him.

Moses: Wasn't that infected out front?

Rachel: He was! Jason! Stop! Jason!

Too late, Jason shoots the grenade by accident, causing an explosion. Outside, the explosion is heard by a figure who is smoking a cigarette. Then the figure walks away. In the warehouse, Rachel, Moses, Zeke, Dana and Morgan recover from the explosion.

Rachel: Everyone okay?

Rachel turns to see Jason has been killed by the explosion via a blow to the head. Dana screams, putting her hand to her mouth.

Dana: Jason!

Rachel: Jesus!

Moses: Fuck!

Morgan turns and is in horror.

Morgan: Oh, no...No....

Rachel points her flashlight to Joshua, the explosion knocked him back and has impaled in the shoulder by a pry bar on the wreckage.

Zeke: Shit...

Morgan: He's dead.

Moses: What do we do?

The explosion has knocked the gate open, allowing the infected and Skinners to swarm in. Dana takes out a few with her knife.

Zeke: What do we do?

Rachel looks around and spots an office.

Rachel: Get to the office! Now, everyone! Go!

Meanwhile, Shawn, James, Peter, Bryan and Connor walk along the trail into the forest, heading towards the traps area.

Connor: Hunting grounds are usually clear of infected.

Bryan: Sometimes they get caught in the snares and shit, though. You see a ribbon on a tree, traps are nearby.

The group of men walk pass a couple of the traps.

Connor: So, you might want to watch your step.

Peter: Please. I think I can handle myself. I'm basically a ninja. Skilled in the craft of martial arts. Due to my Korean heritage.

Shawn looks over at Peter and smiles.

Shawn: Oh, you, too? I thought I was the only one.

Shawn raises his arms like a ninja pose. Peter laughs as James mutters under his breath.

James: Oh my god.

Bryan: We've got shit to do.

The five men split up and look through some of the traps that were near them.

Bryan and Connor were able to shoot some nearby bunnies and catch them but most of the traps were empty or broken. Shawn picks up what looks to be a bible page cigarette.

Shawn: Is this from a bible page?

James looks around then sighs until he sees Sarah, Samantha and Kale nearby, looking at a tree.

Shawn: Guys!

Shawn points to the girls and Kale. The men run over to them, only to see an infected hanging by its feet from of the traps, a spear shoved through its mouth.

The five make an earshot of the others.

Sarah: Where were you guys?

James: Checking nearby traps.

Connor: Yeah, the ones that were sprung were all empty.

Bryan: And all the rest were broken.

Shawn: This wasn't someone from Berrington?

Peter: No, it doesn't look like our work.

Kale: Wait, so we were robbed?!

Peter: Oh, great.....and now, we're going to starve.

Kale turns away from everyone.

Kale: Fuck...that's fuck...fuck! It's just...fuck...come on, Kale...breath....

Kale starts to have a panic attack.

Samantha: Dad, it's okay....you're going to be fine.

Samantha walks next to Kale.

Sarah: Hey, easy. We'll find enough food to get us through the-

Kale turns to Sarah.

Kale: I'm not worried about that!

Samantha: Dad, please!

Kale takes a few deep breaths.

Kale: Let's head back to Berrington. I have to tell Laura about this.

Peter: What are we going to do for food?

Kale: Figure it out.

Shawn: Hey, we can still ration out something from this, right?

James: Barely.

The group heads back to Berrington. Meanwhile, at the warehouse, Rachel, Moses, Morgan, Dana and Zeke are trapped in the office by a horde of infected.

Dana: Great! How the fuck do we get out of here?!

Zeke: I'm thinking!

Morgan: Well, fucking think faster, Zeke!

Rachel turns and looks seeing several duffle bags of packed food.

Rachel: Guys! Look!

Zeke, Morgan and Moses turn to notice food in the duffle bags.

Dana: Holy shit....Look at all this food!

Zeke: This is sweet! Two wins and one day!

Morgan: Let's pack this up and get the fuck out of here, then!

Suddenly, a voice from outside is heard.

Joshua: Help! Someone! Please!

Rachel, Moses, Zeke, Dana and Morgan look outside from the office to see Joshua, impaled, but still alive, crying for help.

Rachel: He's still alive?

Morgan: I checked him! I thought he was dead....I thought-

Moses: We gotta get him.

Morgan: Oh, fuck...

Rachel: We can do it, the three of us.

Rachel, Moses and Morgan turn to Zeke.

Moses: Do we have time?

Morgan: Hold on. We pull Joshua off of that and we could kill him.

Rachel: Well we can't just leave him!

Zeke: Go, save him! Go! I'll get the food to the truck! I will!

Rachel, Morgan, Zeke, Dana and Moses turn to each other.

Rachel: Okay, we'll knock them back.

Rachel turns to Morgan.

Rachel: You got that flare gun?

Morgan: Yeah...

Rachel: You fire the flare over the shelves. That'll draw some of the others over. The rest we'll take on hand to hand.

Rachel, Moses, Dana and Morgan go to the door.

Rachel: You ready?

Morgan: Yeah....

Rachel: One, two, three.

Rachel kicks the door open, knocking back three of the infected as Morgan shoots the flare over to the shelves, drawing over a pack of infected, before the three make a dart to save Joshua. Back in Berrington, Kyle is patrolling the streets of Berrington, just as Shawn, James, Sarah, Peter, Connor, Kale and Bryan return to the gates of Berrington. Kyle then approaches the group.

Kyle: Hey, how'd it go?

Sarah: Not good.....

Kyle: What do you mean?

Shawn: We got fucking robbed of the traps!

Kyle: What?! How'd that happen?!

Discretely, Kyle, Shawn, James and Sarah talk separately.

James: I don't know...

Shawn: But it definitely wasn't one of them for sure. Look....

Shawn presents the bible cigarette.

Kyle: Is this from a bible? What the fuck?

Shawn: Yeah, that's a very creative cigarette.

James: but that's not the only thing.

Shawn: When we mentioned it could be theft, Kale freaked out.....like had a panic attack....

Sarah: Yeah, he seemed fine at the river then that happened.

Kyle: Think we should keep an eye on him?

Shawn: Yeah.....

At the warehouse, Zeke grabs the duffle bags and prepares to make a break for the exit, but stops he hears footsteps around him. Zeke then looks up to see a man, with two different colored eyes, standing in the doorway.

Griffin: Easy, boy. Don't yell. Don't try anything. I won't hurt you.

Griffin smokes a cigarette.

Zeke: Who the fuck are you?

Griffin: The name's Griffin. First name, by the way....and I'm a hungry motherfucker.

Meanwhile, Rachel, Moses and Morgan approach the wounded Joshua while Dana covers the group why knifing any infected.

Rachel: Okay, Joshua. It's going to be okay. We're going to get you out, but we need you to stay quiet.

Joshua looks down at his impaled state.

Joshua: Oh, fuck....

Moses: Guys! The flare is burning out!

Dana: And these infected still keep coming!

Rachel: come on!

Morgan: Guys, we're not going to make this!

Rachel grabs Morgan by the collar.

Rachel: Hey, yes! We can! We can do this, but I need your help!

Joshua looks at Morgan, pleadingly.

Joshua: Please, don't leave me! Don't leave me! Please! I want to see my wife and son again! Please!

Morgan shakes her head.

Morgan: Okay....

Rachel and Morgan prepare to pull until Rachel looks to the distance to see Griffin holding Zeke at gunpoint. Rachel then turns to Moses and Dana.

Rachel: Moses! I need you to take over!

Morgan: What?!

Moses: Why?

Rachel: Just fucking do it!

Rachel sprints off and sneaks her way over as Moses takes Rachel's help, attempting to pry Joshua off from the bars. Griffin continues to hold Zeke at gunpoint.

Griffin: You and your friends made a lot of noise out there. Wasn't hard to follow. You live by?

Zeke: Just passing through. Decided to see what we could scavenge.

Griffin: Uh huh....and you just got extra lucky.

Griffin then walks over to Zeke, near one of the bags he's carrying.

Griffin: You look a little young to be out here on your own. You've got one adult with you. You got a group?

Zeke says nothing as Rachel continues to sneak over, gun ready.

Griffin: It's cool. Sometimes no answer is an answer. Now...

Griffin grabs the duffle bag in Zeke's hand.

Griffin: You're going to release the bag and give it to me.

Zeke: We worked hard to get this stuff.

Griffin clicks down on his hammer.

Griffin: Come on, kid. I've never killed a kid, but I'm willing to.

Rachel aims her pistol at Griffin.

Rachel: Can't say the same for you....

Griffin aims his pistol at Rachel, causing a stand off.

Rachel: That Zeus Corps infected, the one with the grenade. You drew him in to us, didn't you?

Griffin: Guilty as charged. Had to make this robbery a little more easier.

With Dana using her knife to kill any attacking infected, Morgan and Moses continue to attempt to pry off Joshua with the infected horde coming up behind him. Morgan gives a scared look, then looks down, pulling out her revolver then aiming it at Joshua.

Moses: Morgan!

Joshua: What are you doing?!

Morgan: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

Moses: Morgan! No!

In fear, Morgan kills Joshua, startling Dana, who turns her head. The gunshot alerting the Rachel, Zeke and Griffin.

Moses: What the fuck?!

Morgan: I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Morgan runs away. With Dana's head turned, an infected attacks and bites her on the neck.

Moses: Dana!

Mosses shoots the infected in the head, before Dana checks her bite.

Dana: Oh, fuck!

Moses rushes over and helps Dana.

Dana: Leave me! I'm infected!

Moses: I'm not leaving you behind! Come on!

With Rachel distracted, Griffin kicks Zeke down, causing him to drop the bags, but Rachel shoots him in the arm, knocking him back and unfortunately into pack of infected that grab and drag him in the dark corner. Gunshots are heard.

Moses: Rachel!

Rachel helps Zeke, who grabs both duffle bags.

Rachel: Go! Get to the van! Now!

Zeke sprints off with the duffle bags while Rachel sprints back, regrouping with Moses and a bitten Dana.

Rachel: What happened?!

Joshua: Morgan....she...she killed Josh, then ran off!

Rachel: What?!

Rachel turns to notice Dana's bite mark.

Rachel: Dana.....

Suddenly, the infected break through and charge at Rachel and Moses with Dana pulling out her knife and taking out the infected.

Rachel: Dana! No!

Dana: Go! Just fucking go!

Dana takes out a few infected, before being overwhelmed and devoured. The infected not tending to devouring Dana chase after Rachel and Moses. Morgan sprints to the front of the warehouse with Rachel and Moses close behind.

Rachel: Morgan! Stop! You'll never make it!

Morgan exits the front of the warehouse and is ambushed by the infected.

Moses: Heads up, Rachel.

Moses uses the butt of his empty rifle to bash in the head of an infected while Rachel opens fire on the following horde. Outside the front, Morgan shoots at the infected, but they manage to disarm her, causing her to back away. Rachel runs out of ammo in her rifle.

Rachel: Fuck! I'm out!

Moses: Come on!

Rachel and Moses retreat just as Morgan backs into the turning booth of the front door, trapping Morgan on end and Rachel and Moses on both sides with infected on both sides. In Berrington, Kyle is pacing back and forth as Sarah enters the room.

Sarah: What?

Kyle: Rachel is still out there....

Sarah: What do you mean?

Kyle: She and Moses went out on a run with a few of those teens. I knew I shouldn't have let them go.

Sarah: What are you talking about?

Kyle: She's.....I just don't know how I feel with these people, you know?

Sarah: Kyle, she's going to be okay...she's strong....they both are.

Kyle: But are they?

Sarah sighs.

Sarah: Honestly, I'm asking myself that question, too....especially with Kale.....the way he panicked. It's like he's afraid of something.....something bad.

At the warehouse, Rachel, Moses and Morgan still trapped in the turning booth of the front of the warehouse.

Morgan: Hey, you still have guns. Maybe we can shoot out the glass!

Rachel: How are we going to do that when you have all the fucking ammo?!

Morgan: Well, we have to do something! We're gonna fuckin die in here!

Moses: Shit, there has to be a way.

As Rachel, Moses and Morgan look around, Zeke, outside and in the van drives up, honking the horn.

Zeke: Hey! Come on! Come and get me! Come on! That's it! Come on! Follow the van! Come on!

The infected and Skinners in the front of the warehouse follow the van as Moses laughs.

Rachel: Way to go, Zeke.

Rachel then looks around, before devising a plan.

Rachel: Okay. Hey, I need you both to-

Rachel bangs on the glass, getting Morgan's attention.

Rachel: Hey! Morgan! Fucking pay attention! I need you both to hold the door steady. I'm going to break the glass. We'll climb out. You push out and grab the rifle. We're good. Okay. Ready?

Moses and Morgan hold the door while Rachel attempts to break the glass with butt of her rifle. The second impact causes the end of Morgan's to slightly open, exposing her to infected.

Morgan: No! No, stop! It's not safe! Fucking don't!

Rachel: This is the only way.

Morgan: No, it won't break!

Moses: Yes, it will. Listen to her, Morgan. We can hold it. We can.

Rachel: Just trust me, okay? We can do this. Count of three. One. Two. Th-

Morgan: Fuck this!

Morgan pushes the end of her exit open, exposing Rachel and Moses. The infected reach for Moses.

Rachel: Whoa, hey! What the hell are you doing?!

Moses: Hey! Hey! Hey!

Rachel: Morgan! Morgan, don't! Morgan!

Moses: Morgan!

Rachel: Goddammit, Morgan, stop!

The infected grab Moses by the leg as Morgan finally gets out. Both Rachel and Moses fall to the floor as Rachel holds onto Moses.

Rachel: I got you.

Moses then turns to Rachel, grabbing her shoulder. He then caresses Rachel's cheek with a loving look.

Moses: I won't let them get us both....

Rachel: Moses....don't.

Moses: I love you.

Both screaming, Moses is dragged in the horde of infected as Rachel stands and pounds on the glass.

Rachel: No! Moses! Moses! Goddammit, no!

The infected force Moses against the glass and brutally devour him with Rachel tearfully watching her boyfriend brutally eaten. Outside, Zeke is driving around just as Morgan waves him down.

Morgan: Zeke! Hey! Hey! Let me in! We're leaving!

Zeke stares Morgan down, then turns off the van.

Morgan: What the fuck are you doing?! Zeke! Let's go.

Zeke: Where are they, Morgan?

Morgan: Zeke, it doesn't matter. They're dead! Let's go!

Zeke: Where are they?!

Morgan: For fuck's sake, Zeke, just accept they're dead and get in the van so we can go back. Okay?

Morgan touches Zeke's face.

Morgan: Please, all I really care about is us. Okay? You and me made it. That's all that matters. Let's go back to home.

Zeke looks behind Morgan.

Zeke: Rachel...

Morgan: Rachel is dead, Zeke. Her, Moses and Dana are-

Zeke: No...

Zeke points behind Morgan.

Zeke: Rachel....

Morgan turns to see Rachel walking towards the two, glaring and very angry. Zeke sighs with relief.

Zeke: Oh, thank God. Are you okay?

Rachel walks past Zeke towards Morgan.

Morgan: Rachel, wait...Rachel...

Rachel grabs Morgan by the collar and brutally punches her across the face, before throwing her to the ground.

Zeke: Rachel! Wait! Rachel!

Rachel gets on top of Morgan then repeatedly punches Morgan in the face.

Zeke: Rachel!

Rachel then pulls out her pistol then puts to Morgan's head. Morgan then cries, begging for her life.

Morgan: Oh, god! Please! Please! Don't! Please! Please, don't kill me!

Zeke: Rachel...wait...please...just...just put the gun down.

After some tension, Rachel shakes her head and then hits Morgan in the head with her gun, knocking her out. Rachel then breathes heavily as Zeke looks around for the others.

Rachel: Help me get her in the back.....

Zeke: Dana? Moses?

Rachel sighs, give Zeke a look, before walking to the back of the van. Nightfall, at Berrington, Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah, Cassandra, Caleb, Rocky, Margaret, Kayla, Chris and Savannah are gathered around in the center of Berrington, looking very nervous.

Chris: Hey, Kyle. Don't worry. Rachel and Moses are smart kids.

Kyle: Goddammit....what the fuck was I thinking?

Shawn: Dude, it's not your fault.

Sarah touches Kyle's back in comfort.

Cassandra: They're gonna come back.

Suddenly, the van approaches the Berrington gates as Bryan calls out.

Bryan: Got a van!

Everyone in Berrington turns to Bryan at the top of the gate.

Laura: Who is it?

Bryan turns back to the Berrington residents and Kyle and the survivors.

Bryan: It's Rachel, Zeke and Morgan! They have duffle bags of food!

James: What?!

The Berrington gates open as Rachel, Zeke and Morgan enter the gates, carrying the bags. Kyle, the survivors and the Berrington residents approach the three teens. Kyle and Sarah hug Rachel tight.

Kyle: Holy shit!

Sarah: Rachel! You cannot do that! Don't scare us like that!

Rachel looks down.

Rachel: I'm sorry.

Zeke: It's my fault, Mr. Desipich. I asked her to come, but-

Kyle: This does not concern you, boy.

Laura walks up to Zeke and Morgan.

Laura: Zeke, Morgan, what the hell were you doing out there?

Zeke: We got solar panels...and also, food.

Connor: Holy shit....they got food. That's, like, a lot of food.

Peter: Observant as ever.

Chloe: I can't believe this. Look at it.

Kyle scoffs.

Kyle: Well, Rachel. I guess I can't be too mad at you. You did get food for this place.

Rocky: Yeah...nice job, kid.

Rachel: Yeah, thanks...

Anna: Well, where's Joshua, Dana and Jason so they can take credit, too?

Kyle: Wait, where's Moses?

Zeke gives a look. Kyle raises his head.

Kyle: Goddammit....

Cassandra touches Rachel's shoulder in comfort.

Bryan: Oh, fuck....

Brie: Guys.....what are we going to tell Samantha?

Anna: Poor Seth.

Suddenly, Kale walks up to the gathering, looking at the food.

Kale: Where did you find all this?

Rachel: The old warehouse.

Kale: The warehouse...that's outside the safe zone!

Rachel: We'd even have more, but ran into some asshole who sabotaged the whole run?

Kale: Asshole? What asshole?

Zeke: I don't know, but we saw him smoking these bible cigarettes.

Kyle, Shawn, James and Sarah share a look, noting the bible cigarettes they found at the broken trap earlier.

Rachel: He also had these weird-different colored eyes.

Kyle: Did he hurt you?

Rachel: No.

Kale looks at everyone in shock then towards the gate.

Kale: Did he follow you?

Rachel: No. He's dead. I shoved him into a pack of infected and they took a big chunk out of him.

Zeke: Yeah, if he did, he won't be getting far.

Cassandra: Well, at least you killed that asshole.

Kale: You attacked him? What the fuck?! How could you do that?!

Everyone moves away, leaving only Kyle, Sarah, Rachel, Zeke and Kale.

Kale: What the hell were you kids thinking?

Rachel: I told you he's dead-

Kale: And just how did you get to the warehouse without us noticing?!

Zeke sighs.

Zeke: Joshua helped us...

Kale: Jesus Christ! What the hell was he thinking taking you all out there?! How could you be so stupid?!

Kyle: Kale....

Kyle steps between Kale and Rachel.

Kyle: Please....back off. Rachel got food for Berrington....and one of my people died on that run.

Kale: Yeah, but what if that man survived? You don't know what people are capable of out there.

Kale gets in Kyle's face.

Margaret: If you had been out there and experienced what we have, you wouldn't be saying that.

Kale looks around to notice Joshua is missing.

Kale: Wait....

Samantha: Wait....where is my husband?

Rachel glares at Morgan, then walks up to her.

Rachel: You tell her.

Morgan glares at Rachel.

Zeke: Tell her, Morgan.

Morgan then takes a deep breath, before turning to Kale.

Morgan: Uh...Samantha...Dad....Joshua....he....I'm sorry.

Samantha is devastated after hearing about her husband death, before Samantha turns to Seth. Kale walks away and starts talking to himself.

Kale: I can't...I just...I won't...not again....fuck!

Laura and Samantha walk up to the conversation.

Laura: What the hell is going on out here?

Kale turns to Laura.

Kale: Laura, Joshua is dead. The girl took them outside the safe zone...they saw someone! You know what that could mean!

Laura: ENOUGH! It just means there's a hungry prick out there looking for food. It's happened before. You are overreacting.

Kale looks at Laura in shock.

Kale: You can't be serious! Our son-in-law is dead!

Laura grabs Kale's arm.

Laura: Kale, let's talk about this somewhere else.

Kale shoves Laura down, taking her by surprise as she lands on her back. Kale walks up to Kyle, his eyes full of anger.

Kale: If anything happens...I'm holding you and your people responsible!

Kale points to Rachel.

Kale: Especially her!

Kale walks away as Samantha helps Laura stand up.

Samantha: Are you okay?

Laura sighs.

Laura: Yeah....

Laura turns to Kyle and the survivors

Laura: Kyle....I know I asked you guys for help...and you all did...but....shit.

Kyle: I'm sorry about your son.

Rachel: I'm sorry we went outside the safe zone, too. I didn't even know there was one....

Laura turns and hugs a tearful Samantha. She then turns to Zeke.

Laura: And you; you're not step foot outside of Berrington until I investigate further into this. Same for Rachel.

Laura then turns to Morgan

Laura: You're grounded.

Morgan: Mom....

Laura: You heard me. No going out.

Morgan: That's bullshit!

Laura: Excuse me?!

Samantha: Morgan!

Morgan points to Kyle and his group.

Morgan: These people are dangerous! And they're not like us! They're fucking killers!

Morgan then points to Rachel.

Morgan: This fucking bitch almost killed me!

Morgan turns to Laura.

Morgan: You know it's true.

Morgan turns to Laura.

Morgan: You know it's true.

Samantha touches Morgan's arm.

Samantha: Morgan, that's enough.

Morgan: Samantha, are you serious? Your husband is dead! The father of your child! What are you going to tell Seth?!

Morgan turns then walks away from the conversation. Zeke then sighs, before turning to Rachel.

Zeke: Hey, don't listen to her. You did great.

Brie: Come on, Zeke .....

Zeke turns to Brie, then back at Rachel.

Zeke: Rachel...I'm sorry about Moses.

Rachel gives a saddened day then Zeke begins walking back home with Brie.

Laura: I'm going to speak to Kale. At least we're going to be eating for a while. Thanks, guys.

Laura walks away, saddened by the loss of Joshua.

Peter: Don't sweat it, guys.

Alicia: Ever since we lost Colleen and Melanie, Kale's been freaked out by anything that happens past the safe zone. She'll be alright.

Sarah and Rachel walks up to a tearful Samantha.

Sarah: Samantha, I'm so sorry.

Samantha smiles at the group.

Samantha: Thanks, guys. We'll have a funeral for my husband, Dana and Jason tomorrow. Moses, too. Thank you. I'll tell Seth what happened in the morning.

Samantha walks off, before Rachel turns to Kyle.

Kyle: I know you and I wanna hear your side of the story....the actual truth.

The survivors go home for the night. Before Cassandra. and Sarah walk off, Alicia speaks.

Alicia: Hey, don't worry about them. Everyone's just sad today. Not just about Joshua, Dana and Jason....

Sarah: What else is it?

Alicia: My sisters were killed around this time. It's been a year already today. I think it's starting to get to people.

Cassandra: Doesn't it get to you?

Alicia: Not really. Dying's not so bad as it seems. I mean, sure, it's sad...but not scary. I try not to focus on them being gone. People we lose.

Sarah: Tell us about your sisters, Alicia.

Alicia sighs.

Alicia: Colleen was awesome at making shit. She'd build a place big enough for all of us to live, and paint it the same day.....and Melanie, she had a beautiful singing voice.....I guess death really doesn't scare me because I know when I wake up, I know what's on the other side.

Sarah smiles.

Sarah: It's nice to think about, Alicia.

Alicia: I believe we'll all be okay when we reach that world.....

Sarah: Yeah, we will....
