The progress of a cultivator is measured by their mastery over various stages and ranks (级, jí) within those stages. Each stage is a formidable challenge, with the practitioner honing their skills and pushing their bodies to greater heights. To quantify this power, most cultivation systems employ a tiered ranking structure within each stage, commonly composed of nine or twelve layers or levels, though variations exist. These layers serve as milestones, each one harder to reach than the last, marking the cultivator's advancement toward the next stage.
Understanding the Ranks, Levels, Layers, and Stages:
Each stage is typically divided into 9 or 12 layers (层, céng), from the initial level to the pinnacle of that stage. Upon achieving the ninth or twelfth level, the cultivator stands on the cusp of breaking through to the next, entering the first rank of the new stage. Yet, legends speak of a mysterious and near-mythical thirteenth level (or the additional level)—the Perfect Stage (圆满境界, Yuánmǎn Jìngjiè)—rarely achieved due to its immense difficulty. Reaching this perfect stage grants a monumental leap in power, and granted more longevity, setting those cultivators apart from even their peers at the peak.

Each stage is further categorized by four major states:
1. Early Stage (初期, Chūqí) - Ranks 1-3 or 1-4
At this stage, the cultivator has just entered a new realm of power. Their abilities are still developing, and they are focused on stabilizing their foundation. The cultivator is often still vulnerable and must work diligently to consolidate their gains.
2. Middle Stage (中期, Zhōngqí) - Ranks 4-6 or 5-8
During the middle stage, the cultivator's control over their power improves significantly. They begin to harness their newfound abilities more effectively and can contend with those at a lower rank in the next stage. At this level, the cultivator shows their first true glimpses of their potential.
3. Late Stage (后期, Hòuqí) - Ranks 7-8 or 9-11
As the cultivator approaches the late stage, their abilities become fully matured within this stage. They possess formidable power and often seek to push their limits. Battles against those at the same stage are fierce, and many cultivators at this level start preparing for the tribulations that accompany their next breakthrough.
4. Peak Stage (巅峰, Diānfēng) - Rank 9 or 12
The pinnacle of any stage, the peak stage, represents the height of a cultivator's mastery within their current realm. They are often described as being "one step away" from the next stage. Their power is fully refined, and their presence is awe-inspiring. Cultivators at the peak stage often seek ways to break through to the next realm, gathering resources and preparing themselves for the harsh tribulations ahead.
5. Perfect Stage (圆满境界, Yuánmǎn Jìngjiè) - 13th Rank or the additional rank before advanced to next stage cultivation period.
The elusive thirteenth level, known as the Perfect Stage, is a rare achievement spoken of in legends. Attaining this level is not just about power—it is about achieving a state of flawless harmony within oneself. Cultivators who reach this stage can perform feats that seem impossible to others, often rivaling those in the early ranks of the next stage. This state is so rare and hard to achieve, not many genius in cultivation world can achieve this stage.
6. Half-Step to the Next Stage (半步__境, Bànbù __ Jìng)
As a cultivator approaches the brink of a breakthrough but cannot quite cross over, they are said to be in a "half-step" state. This is a precarious position where the cultivator stands at the edge of their current stage, nearly touching the next. This "half-step" designation reflects a profound understanding of their current realm, with the cultivator's body, mind, and spirit straining against the limitations of their current state. The cultivator's Qi fluctuates, showing hints of the power that lies just beyond their grasp. Reaching this state often results in fierce internal battles as the practitioner seeks that final push to ascend to the next stage. It's a tantalizing and dangerous position—filled with potential but fraught with the risk of failure.
