Chapter 10: River of Time & Romantic Rivals
The Waverider hummed, a comforting (and slightly nauseating) sign of temporal travel. Adam, now a semi-regular fixture in the Legends' chaotic lives, was on board, ready for the next historical adventure. This time: 1958. "Ah, the atomic age. Drive-ins, rock and roll, and probably a few too many repressed emotions. Perfect for some subtle chaos," Adam mused.
[SYSTEM: Temporal Jump Complete. Destination: 1958. Objective: Locate Historical Anomaly. Suggestion: Maintain Cover. Your current attire is… still anachronistic.]
"System, we've been over this. It's a statement," Adam retorted mentally, adjusting his t-shirt. He watched as the Legends disembarked, Rip Hunter looking particularly grim, probably already anticipating the next time aberration.
Adam's primary objective for this trip, besides the usual subtle assistance, was to continue his relentless (and, in his mind, charming) pursuit of Sara Lance. He found her scouting ahead, her usual stoic demeanor a challenge he was more than willing to meet.
He teleported directly in front of her, holding out a single, perfectly formed, glowing lollipop. "For the discerning assassin on the go. Sugar rush for those long stakeouts."
Sara, surprisingly, didn't flinch. She just raised an eyebrow. "You know, you're going to give me a cavity."
"A small price to pay for my charming company," Adam grinned. "Besides, I'm pretty sure I can manifest a nanotech toothbrush. So, about that date? I'm thinking… a drive-in movie? We can watch a B-movie monster flick and I can provide sarcastic commentary. It'll be epic."
Sara actually chuckled, a genuine, warm sound. "You really don't give up, do you?"
"Never," Adam declared. "It's my superpower. Besides, you know you're intrigued. You keep showing up wherever I am. It's like the universe wants us to be a thing. A very chaotic, slightly annoying thing."
She sighed, but there was a hint of amusement in her eyes. "Fine. If we survive this mission, and you don't get us all killed with your… 'charm,' I'll consider it."
"Consider it done!" Adam cheered, then teleported away, leaving her with the glowing lollipop and a bewildered smile.
[SYSTEM: Relationship Status: Sara Lance - Progressing (Chaotically).]
"Chaotically progressing! That's practically a wedding invitation, System!" Adam thought, feeling a surge of triumph.
He then decided to turn his attention to Rip Hunter, who was constantly stressed and seemed to view Adam as a personal temporal headache. Rip was trying to communicate with the Waverider, his comms crackling.
Adam focused. Shimmer. Suddenly, Rip's comms began to play a tinny, distorted version of "Yakety Sax," the classic Benny Hill theme song. Rip froze, his eyes widening in horror. He furiously fiddled with his comms, muttering about "temporal interference" and "unauthorized frequencies."
[SYSTEM: Illusion deployed. Target: Rip Hunter. Effect: Mild Paranoia.]
Adam, hidden nearby, stifled a giggle. "Oh, Rip, you magnificent drama queen. This is just the beginning."
Later, he found Mick Rory grumbling to Snart about Adam's persistent presence. "He's always there, Snart! Like a bad smell! And he keeps making weird things appear!"
Snart, ever the pragmatist, just shrugged. "He's useful. And he annoys Rip. What's not to like?"
Adam, unseen, subtly used his powers to make a stray cat suddenly appear and rub affectionately against Rory's leg, purring loudly. Rory stared at the cat, then at Snart, then back at the cat, utterly bewildered.
"What the…?! Where did you come from, you furry demon?!" Rory exclaimed, kicking at the air.
Snart, a rare, genuine smirk on his face, simply walked away, leaving Rory to grapple with the affectionate feline.
Adam grinned. "My work here is done. For now." He knew the Legends were about to face some serious threats, and he'd be there, a chaotic guardian angel, ensuring things were never quite as serious as they seemed. And maybe, just maybe, he'd finally get that drive-in date.
