The hall collapsed in silence.
No rumble. No dust. Just absence—as if the domain had never existed at all.
Kieran Vale felt solid ground beneath him again. Cold wind brushed his face, and the starlight returned. The Ravenspire crater stretched out below, twisted and still, the rippling gate now sealed behind them. The air had shifted—lighter somehow, but watchful.
He breathed.
Riven Amari sat a few feet away, nursing a cut above her brow. Her jacket was torn, blood crusted along the sleeve, but her eyes were sharp. Alive.
"I think," she muttered, "I hate gates."
Kieran let out a breathless laugh and dropped to sit beside her.
"Not all of them are bad."
"That one tried to erase us from time," she deadpanned.
"True."

Kieran rolled the Heartstone between his fingers.
It looked simple—gray-red crystal, roughly the size of a coin, pulsating faintly with a rhythmic glow.
But when he held it longer, he felt it.
It wasn't just power.
It was decision.
"Codex," he whispered. "Options."
[Codex Heartstone – Usage Menu]
Choose one of the following:
Passive Trait – Blood Resonance – Your blood reacts autonomously in danger. +10% evasion when HP < 30%.
Passive Trait – Iron Will – Immunity to Tier I mental intrusion. Reduced fear effects.
Insight – Crimson Ascendant Tier Map (Preview) – Reveals all seven fragments and corresponding trial triggers for the Crimson Ascendant path. – Note: Does not unlock fragments—only path guidance.
Kieran hesitated.
The passives were valuable. Useful.
But the third choice offered something bigger.
Insight.
Control over his own evolution, rather than reacting to it.
"I want the map."
[Confirmed: Crimson Ascendant Insight Activated]
[Tier Map: Fragment Locations Revealed]
• Fragment 1: Mirror Trial (complete)• Fragment 2: Ravenspire Echo Gate (complete)• Fragment 3: Sanctuary Shrine Corruption (locked)• Fragment 4: Crimson Depths (unreachable)• Fragment 5: Gate of Sacrifice (event-locked)• Fragment 6: Bloodbound Duel (must be challenged)• Fragment 7: Unknown / Lost Realm
The list hung in his vision like a constellation of destiny.
And at the center of it all: Sanctuary.
Fragment 3 was inside the place that was trying to control him.
Kieran clenched the Heartstone until it cracked—then watched it dissolve into red mist and vanish into his palm.
Riven glanced sideways at him. "You picked?"
He nodded.
"What'd you get?"
"Information."
"Useful?"
He turned to her. "Potentially dangerous."
They didn't return to Sanctuary until well past dawn.
The gates opened without delay, but the guards didn't hide their stares. Whispers followed them through the perimeter. Codex users turned to look. Some narrowed their eyes. Others simply stepped aside.
Word had traveled.
Kieran wasn't just the newcomer with a forged Bloodsteel weapon anymore.
He was something else.
The Council of Five didn't summon him.
They didn't need to.
They were already waiting.
Inside the central dome, just beyond the Codex Shrine, the five sat in formation. Their expressions were unreadable—especially Myra Lorne, whose eyes glowed brighter than before, white mana rings spinning faster behind the veil of her irises.
"Welcome back," Roth said evenly. "We watched the Gate collapse."
"It wasn't natural," Mira Kael said. "It didn't behave like any Codex trial we've recorded."
"Because it wasn't a trial for you," Kieran said. "It was for me."
Caden Voss leaned forward. "And what did you bring back?"
Kieran didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned his eyes to Myra.
"You know what's inside the Shrine, don't you?"
The silence that followed was thick.
Lyra Quinn straightened. "What are you talking about?"
Riven stepped forward before Kieran could speak. "The third fragment of his Codex path. It's here. Buried in your so-called node."
Mira rose, power coiling around her in red tendrils.
"You presume much."
"I presume nothing," Kieran said. "The Codex showed me the path. One of the fragments is inside your Shrine, and it's corrupted."
[Codex Sync: External pressure detected. Defensive state engaged.]
[Suggestion: Activate Blood Bind preemptively? Y/N]
Kieran kept his hands at his sides.
"I don't want a fight," he said quietly. "But I will access that fragment."
"And if we refuse?" Mira asked.
"Then the Codex itself will take it from you."
The Shrine pulsed behind them—one strong, slow heartbeat.
Roth stood, voice calm. "Let's all take a breath. No one's drawing weapons."
"No," Myra said softly. "Let him try."
Kieran narrowed his eyes.
"I beg your pardon?"
She gestured toward the Shrine. "You want to test your bond? The node reacts only to harmony. If you approach with corruption, it will burn you from the inside out."
"Or," Caden said lightly, "it'll accept you—and we'll know what we're dealing with."
Kieran stepped forward, past the line of the council, toward the Shrine.
The Codex Heartstone's energy still pulsed faintly in his chest, guiding him.
He reached out a hand.
The moment his fingers touched the air around the crystal, a ring of blood-red runes ignited, circling his wrist.
[Codex Sync: Fragment Identified – Crimson Ascendant 3/7]
[Commencing Purification Process…]
Red light exploded outward, engulfing the chamber.
The Shrine pulsed wildly—uncontrolled, flickering between red and white. Mana rippled across the floor, cracking tiles and toppling torches. Kieran felt something rip loose inside his chest—a scream made of instinct and evolution.
Riven staggered back.
The council rose, weapons half-drawn.
And then, with a final flash of crimson light, the room went still.
Kieran stood upright.
The Shrine behind him now pulsed in harmony—no longer wild, but steady.
[Fragment 3/7 Acquired – Shrine Purified]
[Passive Unlocked: Bloodstep (Lv. 1)]– Short-range blink (up to 5 meters) through blood resonance. Can pass through certain physical barriers.– Cooldown: 12 seconds
[Title Earned: Shrinebreaker]– You have forcibly unsealed a Codex Node.– You are now marked by the Codex as "Unchained."– Future nodes may react aggressively.
Kieran turned around slowly.
The council stared at him like he was no longer one of them.
Which, perhaps, he never was.
