Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Preserving the Campfire

Women's Island.

On Hua Yun's side, the three of them were eating roast chicken, the atmosphere extremely harmonious.

Hua Yun divided two drumsticks among her teammates, her expression gentle.

"Speaking of which, we've been on the island for a day. I still don't know your names. Why don't we introduce ourselves again and also mention what we're good at."

The slightly older woman paused and said, "Ning You, I'm an ocean doctor. I know some emergency measures, can treat most illnesses, and know quite a few folk remedies, but I'm not very knowledgeable about survival-related things."

The young girl said timidly, "Chen Yaoyao, I'm a college student. Special skills... Does singing and dancing count?"

Hua Yun nodded with a smile, "It counts, shows you have good stamina and flexibility."

Encouraged, Chen Yaoyao became more confident and continued, "Actually, I've watched a lot of survival shows, learned about making fire, building shelter, finding water, and so on. I have some understanding and can try to take action. This fire was started by me."

Upon hearing this, Ning You smiled and nodded, "Before the rain, Yaoyao wanted to try starting a fire. At the time, I didn't believe she could do it."

"Who would have known, before you returned, Yaoyao had already started the fire. Seeing it was going to rain, I took her to move the fire under this tree before the rain."

"By the time you returned, the two of us had already set up this simple shelter."

Hua Yun nodded, gently nibbling on the chicken breast, "You two are really capable, you've helped me a lot."

"My name is Hua Yun, I'm a registered member of the Hua Country Exploration Association, and my profession is an outdoor survival streamer, specializing in hunting."

Upon hearing this, Chen Yaoyao's eyes widened, "Exploration Association? There's such an organization?"

"Yes."

Hua Yun explained briefly, "Our association is registered with the state. It's a professional social group engaged in exploration activities."

"That's impressive!"

Chen Yaoyao's eyes shone with excitement, making Hua Yun a bit embarrassed.

She chuckled and continued, "The three of us make a pretty good team. I'm good at exploration and hunting, Yaoyao and Miss Ning can handle the survival chores, we're a good complement to each other."

"Starting tomorrow, I'll be focusing on hunting. For the camp chores, you two can discuss and handle them, how about that?"

"I have no objections."

Ning You nodded in agreement.

This was exactly what she valued about Hua Yun's hunting skills and why she stood firm with Hua Yun's side when the team had a disagreement and Hua Yun left.

Chen Yaoyao also nodded in agreement.

[Who says women can't match men! Look at our Hua, Miss Ning, and Yao!]

[A top hunter, a wilderness doctor, a chores expert, truly great]

[666, this group truly has strength]

[But why do the three of them want to leave the team to survive?]

[Oh, wasn't it the women's group that kicked three guys aside]

[How's it going on that side?]

[Not great, too many opinions resulted in nothing being accomplished, they haven't even managed to start a fire yet]

...

On Chen Wen's side.

Thinking about how to preserve fire, he finally had a few immature ideas.

Relating to what happened while starting the fire, Chen Wen realized there were only two methods for preserving it.

One was to make easily ignitable fire starters and start the fire again in the morning.

The other was to slow down the burning speed, make the campfire small, and add fuel in the morning to make it blaze again.

Currently, Chen Wen felt the second method was more suitable.

As is commonly known, flame combustion requires three conditions.

Combustible material, an oxidizer, and an ignition point.

The combustible material needs no further explanation; Chen Wen's dry firewood was sufficient, and the wet wood was being dried around the campfire.

The oxidizer is oxygen, which is abundant on this island.

As for the ignition point, Chen Wen already had a lit flame on his side.

Thus, to slow down the flame's burning speed,

reducing contact with the oxidizer was the best method Chen Wen could think of.

How to reduce contact with the oxidizer?

Chen Wen rubbed his chin.

He noticed something while starting the fire.

At that time, when his fingers were close together, the flame wouldn't ignite.

But when he opened his fingers and pinched the tinder, the fire immediately ignited.

"Should I try to surround the campfire with something?"

Chen Wen glanced at the things next to him.

But soon, he abandoned this idea.

There was nothing to use for surrounding; the suitcases could easily catch fire.

"From another perspective, surrounding the campfire is meant to reduce oxygen and flame contact, so I just need to reduce the contact surface between oxygen and fire."

Chen Wen felt he was talking nonsense.

"Right, I remember seeing in a United States western documentary that cowboys camping in the wilderness would throw dirt on the campfire to keep it burning through the night."

"Some cowboys would press wet firewood and large logs on the campfire to extend the burning time."

Chen Wen had an idea: "I don't have large wood, but there's plenty of wet firewood and sand... Sand works too."

"Why not give it a try?"

Try it out and risk the consequences.

Chen Wen was always a man of action.

He gathered some wet firewood and covered the campfire with it.

But soon, thick smoke rose.

Covering his nose, Chen Wen swore at the cowboys, "Damn it, this bunch has to be out of their minds. So much smoke, how could one sleep?"

Clearly, the cowboy's wet firewood method was not suitable for Chen Wen.

After clearing the wet firewood, Chen Wen continued trying to cover it with sand.

Carefully scattering pebbles from the beach over the campfire.

With the wood being covered by sand, the previously blazing campfire quickly became feeble.

"It works!"

Chen Wen was delighted.

But soon, he became a bit worried.

In high school, Chen Wen learned: insufficient wood combustion easily produces carbon monoxide.

This thing is poisonous!

But pondering it carefully, carbon monoxide production mostly occurs in stoves.

Only in conditions as enclosed as those does carbon monoxide form.

In his wide-open area, there shouldn't be major problems.

Chen Wen yawned and fell asleep.

...

Night deepens.

On Chen Wen's northern sea.

A fishing boat is sailing slowly.

"Where is Zhao? Is he late?"

The captain of the boat yawned, asking the first mate.

"Who knows, Zhao is always on time. Could he have encountered a school of fish? That stingy guy really has good fortune."

The first mate was also bored.

The captain shook his head; their harvest this trip was average.

He had a good relationship with Captain Zhao.

As usual, he decided to try his luck at Captain Zhao's fishing area.

And ask him about the nearby schools of fish.

"No more waiting, get ready to start working soon. I'll give Zhao a satellite call."

The captain said and went to his cabin.

Shortly after.

The satellite call didn't connect.

The captain frowned, confused.

"That's strange?"

While the captain was puzzled, shouts of surprise came from the deck of the fishing boat.

The captain quickly reached the deck, only to see the terrified looks of the crew.

"What happened?"

The captain sternly questioned.

The first mate, shaking, pointed to the water outside the boat, "Some... something's wrong! It's... Zhao!"

The captain was instantly chilled and had a rough idea of what happened.

He reached the side of the fishing boat, looking in the direction the first mate pointed.

The captain saw a scene he would never forget.

His old friend Zhao was floating on the sea, dead in a tragic manner...
