Chapter 25 - The thread between us

Episode 25: The Thread Between Us

Location: Luna Estate – Elio's Bedroom, Dawn

Evan had barely slept.

She sat on the edge of Elio's bed, watching his tiny chest rise and fall too slowly. His skin was pale, beads of sweat dotting his forehead.

"Come on, baby," she whispered, wiping his cheek. "Stay with me."

Dr. Voss entered quietly, scanning the vitals. His face gave away nothing, but his hands trembled slightly.

"I've run every test twice," he said. "His body isn't shutting down… but his neural activity is syncing with someone else's."

Evan stood. "Kai."

"Yes."

Abel entered behind her, dressed in black, eyes burning with cold rage.

"If Kai's been taken again… this is Cassandra accelerating her plan."

Evan stared at the monitor. Elio's brainwaves flickered—just like Kai's had in the files.

"What happens if Kai dies?" she asked.

Dr. Voss hesitated. "…Then Elio might die, too."

Flashback – 2 Years Ago, Secret Phoenix Facility

Kai screamed behind the glass wall.

Cassandra stood on the other side, emotionless.

"It's too much," one scientist said. "The bond—he's feeling everything the other child does."

Cassandra's lips curved. "Good. Let them feel. That's how you build loyalty. Pain is truth."

Back to Present – Cassandra's Abandoned Bio Facility

Evan and Abel stormed into the ruins of the training site. Broken tech, burnt records, shattered observation mirrors.

The smell of metal and blood lingered.

Emrys's voice crackled through comms. "You've got twenty minutes. Drones are sweeping the zone."

Evan found a bloodstained photo on the ground: her, holding Elio as a newborn. The edges were clawed.

Abel opened a steel drawer—and stopped cold.

Inside was a journal.

Handwritten.

By Cassandra.

"Kai is forming thoughts faster than expected. Subject K is aware of Subject E. His first word wasn't 'mother.' It was 'brother.'"

Evan gripped the edge of the table, chest aching.

"She was training him to love Elio… and then to forget him."

Back at Luna Estate – Emergency Room

Elio's body convulsed once. Just once. Enough to make Zane panic.

"He's going into neural shock," the doctor shouted. "Inject the stabilizer—now!"

Zane gripped Elio's hand. "Hold on, little warrior. Your mom's coming for you."

The monitor screamed.

Elsewhere – Kai's Location (Unknown Bunker)

Kai jolted awake.

He was strapped to a metal table.

An IV pulsed into his arm. Cold. Electric.

A voice echoed from the intercom above.

"You feel it, don't you? The bond burning."

Kai didn't speak. He just stared straight ahead.

But then—

He closed his eyes.

And whispered: "Elio…"

A wave of light shimmered from the table—his neural waves flaring.

Across the city, Elio breathed again.

Meanwhile – Outside the Facility

Evan and Abel climbed a hill where a metal hatch lay buried under vines.

"There's someone still alive here," Evan said.

Abel kicked the hatch open—and a thin, bearded man stared up at them, shielding his eyes from the light.

"I knew you'd come," he said.

Evan blinked. "Who are you?"

"I'm the one who kept Kai from forgetting you."

He held out a black drive.

"It's all in here. Every file. Every video. Every secret. She made him believe you were dead. But he never forgot. Not once."

Evan grabbed the drive with shaking fingers.

Her lips quivered. "Where is he?"

"Moved to a secondary site. One built under your old orphanage."

Back at the Estate – War Room

Abel laid out a blueprint of the ruins of the orphanage, showing a massive underground complex.

"He's here," Abel said. "If we get in from the west, we can avoid the defense perimeter."

Evan's hand hovered over a red dot on the map. Her childhood bedroom.

"That's where she kept me," she whispered. "She's bringing it full circle."

Zane loaded ammo into a gun. "Then let's burn the circle to the ground."

Final Scene – Kai's Mind (Dreamscape)

He stands in an empty white field.

A child approaches. Elio.

They don't speak.

They just reach out—and touch hands.

Both of their hearts beat once in sync.

Then Kai opens his eyes in the real world.

Chains rattle.

But this time, he smiles.

"They're coming."
