Chapter 26 - Benevolent Bones

Nonetheless, the first matter we need to attend to is not what just happened with the orb. There's something you need to say aloud right here and now. Speak it clearly, Ivan. What is their name?" Nightingale said as he patted one of his hands to his heart. I felt as if I was still trying to wrap my head around this situation. I mean, was I in some kind of danger? No. That's not what I should have been thinking at this time anyways. My patron, the one who has blessed me with a power that will help bring back those I love, would not be worried about prying eyes. At this moment, I felt like I was connected to them in a way that made me understand their intentions. Each time I spoke with them, I had felt like I was growing more and more understanding of what they were and the true meaning behind their words. I could feel the divine power inside of me far more clearly than before. My power was now defined, as it was meant to be. My patron god is not some push over, and neither am I. If I am to represent his desires in this world, then I should do it in a way befitting of his status. The words I had been searching for began forming themselves, straight from my heart. I made eye contact with Nightingale, with a fiery determination in my eyes. I spoke aloud with pride in my newfound strength and support. "My patron god… Is one who persists and deters. He is the bane to all that is evil. The power bestowed to me through his benevolence, should be called as such. My blessing, Benevolent Bones… Was granted to me by the God of all that is left behind. His name is… Osseous of the Remains." I said as I raised my fist into the air, and channeled my divine power. From my fist, emitted a deep purple energy that formed into the distinct shape of a skull with horns.

As Nightingale had been listening to me declare my connection to my patron god, I could clearly see a spark of excitement in his eyes growing stronger as I spoke. When I presented the skull with horns in the air, Nightingale literally yelled out into the air, "YESSS!!!! I KNEW IT!!! HAHAHA!!! IVAN! Do you know what this means?" Nightingale asked with a crazed look of enthusiasm. "… I'm not sure I understand." I replied. Nightingale immediately ran over to the work desk at the end of the vault and ripped a notebook or something like it out of a drawer. I could hear him mumbling something about "I need to write this down! He he he he." His excitement about my own achievement was a bit much… But it makes sense considering his personality. He is an odd one for sure. I walked over to him and said, "Uh, is everything alright Sir Nightingale?" He then turned his head and looked at me as if I had interrupted something incredibly important… I squinted my eyes at him and had to resist the urge of knocking him on the head. "Hmph, well for your information Ivan, Osseous is a god that hasn't shown himself to the mortal world, EVER. So I need to document this immediately. Do you have the small coffin with you?" He asked me while proceeding to jot down notes into his journal. I had the small black coffin in my pocket, so I reached into it and pulled it out. I then placed it onto the work desk next to Nightingale's journal. Nightingale pulled out a set of small lensed glasses out of his coat pocket and put them on. He gently picked up the small coffin and inspected it closely. He then spoke up as he noticed something, "Ah Ha! Yes this all makes sense now. Ivan, this little coffin is certainly no ordinary item. Remember I told you that out of the gifting box, it will summon a special artifact from within this world to aid you?" I nodded and responded, "Yes, I do recall that. And you said I needed to call someone right?" Nightingale took off his glasses and put them away. "That's right, your friend that came to fetch me. His name was Raven if I remember correctly. I was definitely surprised when a skeleton appeared before me, especially the skeleton of a man I once knew long ago…" He said as he turned towards me and made eye contact. I was really taken aback by his words. He said he knew who Raven was? "Sir Nightingale… what exactly do you mean by saying you knew him?" I questioned in shock. "That's right, I once knew who he was. In fact he was quite a renowned person, but went missing after certain events. But I can tell you more about that at another time. For now, I need you to call for him. That should be easy now that you have linked with Osseous completely. We will need him here to confirm something with this small coffin. You see, when I initially examined this artifact I was actually trying to confirm the power that I could sense was coming from it. I wasn't able to until you just completely linked with your patron god. Now I am certain that this coffin is something that was created by Osseous himself. In fact, it was certainly no coincidence that it appeared out of the gifting box. My belief is that he specially prepared this for you and sent it from where he currently dwells. So, it has become increasingly evident that Osseous of the remains, one of the greatest of the Gods… Has fully and completely invested himself into you. This of course was a great surprise, but it tells me two things in particular. The first is that he intends to defend the mortal realm, otherwise he would not have involved himself. The second is that there is clearly a threat within the mortal world right now that he feels is more than necessary to intervene in. That part is very concerning… Especially since he wasn't even willing to be involved with the mortal world the first time the calamities befell us. Right now, we have a lot of work ahead of us. So, go ahead and call Raven for me, Ivan." Nightingale said with a gesture of his hand. I wasn't entirely sure how he was expecting me to do that. I could definitely sense where Raven was but I didn't know how I was supposed to call him. I guess there was no point in trying to overthink it. Instead, I just started to focus and think about Raven in my mind. I called out to him in my thoughts, relaying the same words over and over. "Come to me. Come to me. Come to me." Sure enough, I felt something strange begin to happen. It was like some part of my blessing began to manifest itself outside of my body. Just about 5 feet away from me, on the ground of the vault I could see the deep purple hue of my divine energy beginning to swirl in a spiral. It was subtle, and then instantly powerful as it spun into a small dust devil of energy. Out of that small torrent of energy, arose Raven. As if he came straight out of the ground, he appeared before us in a crouched stance. He said nothing upon arrival, but he looked at me with his hollow eyes and I felt like I understood that he was waiting for me to call him. It seemed that it wasn't entirely necessary for me to exchange words with him at this point, as we were connected by something much more intrinsic. Based on my recent experiences using my blessing, a lot of its use was based more around my immediate feelings on what it was capable of. I would definitely need to test the limits of my capabilities going forward. The fact that I could now summon Raven to my side was an incredible discovery. As I looked more closely at Raven, having not seen him in quite some time now, I noticed that he looked even more rough then when I first encountered him. There were clear notches and marks across his bones and his clothes looked very weathered. He was still adorned in all kinds of random swords and weapons, but I was very curious as to what he had been doing up until this point. For some reason he was still carrying that broken sword in one of his hands. I was unsure if that weapon in particular or any of the weapons he carried had some kind of meaning to him. Perhaps he was some kind of weapon master in his previous life… I hope I will get the chance to ask him about that some day.
