Chapter 3 - Trouble at the Range

Soft light illuminated the room, sun rays carelessly outlined the mess that filled it.Ding![System Window]Congratulations, you have completed the quest: [Teach Brother Liam a Lesson]For completing this quest, you have received the following rewards:New Feature Unlocked → ProfileNew Feature Unlocked → System SkillsNew Feature Unlocked → Shop (Level 1)Received: 10 APAttention!Since you overfulfilled the quest, you will be awarded an additional reward!Ding!Calculating reward...Additional reward:New system skill unlocked → Magic Eye (S-Rank)Received: 137 AP(P.S. Are you sure Liam is still alive?)

Damian, who had been looking at the rewards and pondering what this system window was, turned his attention to Liam lying nearby. He was unconscious. Despite having beaten him so hard, not a single mark was left.It was a special technique created by Damian himself. It inflicted immense pain on the target without causing physical harm. Thanks to it, he could torture enemies for days and nights without pause — it helped him a lot during the war when he fought for the Empire.Hahaha... But in truth, he couldn't help but smirk at the irony: after all, he gave half his life, if not all, for the Empire, but in the end they just stabbed him in the back.Hmm... But in reality, he used that technique for a reason. After all, no matter who Liam was, he was still an aristocrat and the son of the Head of the family and his second wife, which made him a potential heir of the house. Moreover, he wasn't entirely lacking in talent. Although in truth, no one placed much hope on him.And most likely, if I had just beaten him — that would've been a reason to kick me out of here. But like this, even though Liam is a vegetable inside, no one can prove it.

Damian stood up and looked at the rewards:"I roughly understand all the points, but what is this skill?.."He thought about the skill — and immediately a huge amount of text and system windows appeared before him.

[Large Oak Shelf][Old Book on Engineering][Worn Oak Bed]

As soon as his gaze focused on an object, he could learn information about it — for now, only the name. But judging by what he saw, the skills could be developed, and perhaps in the future this skill would play its role. But for now, it wasn't that useful.Damian simply couldn't think of how to use it.

At the moment he looked at Liam:"What if I look at a person?"

His piercing gaze struck his unconscious brother.

Ding!

[Human — Liam Ford (Level 7)]

Hahaha — at once he realized the usefulness of the skill: the ability to identify a person — or even non-humans. Also, knowing the level of the opponent was quite a valuable trait, though he still didn't understand how this whole system worked.

Surveying the whole mess, he came to the conclusion that nothing good would come of staying here. So...

Thud.

Liam's body flew out of the second-story window and got stuck in a tree.

Wiping his hands, Damian said:— Now no one can prove my guilt.

Looking at the wall clock, he put on his training uniform and headed to the training grounds:— Let's see what they'll try to teach me there.

At the moment, Damian was a simple student training to become a knight. And, of course, like everyone, he underwent daily training that began at noon and ended in the evening.

Reaching the training ground, he saw a crowd of boys his age and a trainer who was making them swing swords.

Coming closer, everyone noticed him, and the burly trainer with a sword in hand looked at him:— Oh, don't tell me that bastard really showed up?

Damian looked at him:"Oh, right. I guess I already forgot how the family treats me..."

Ding!

[System Window]New Quest Received:Defeat Trainer Fasco in a training duel!

— Uh... What kind of quest is this? — Damian was surprised. If only his mana channels were open — he'd win easily. But considering he could use less than a percent of his own mana, this was practically impossible.

[Human — Fasco Avorne (Level 15)]

"I just barely beat Liam, and that was only thanks to luck and the fact that he didn't take me seriously... What am I supposed to do against someone who's at least twice as strong?"

[Check the Shop]

— The Shop?

Thinking about it, another window appeared in front of Damian with four items.

— Haha... Well, I guess it's possible now. Buy!

In Damian's hand appeared three small bottles with a yellow elixir.

The trainer looked at him again, starting to approach:— Are you deaf or something? Get into punishment stance!

Damian drank all the bottles and said:— Why should I listen to someone weaker than me?

Silence fell on the training ground — everyone was clearly shocked that he could say something like that in front of Trainer Fasco.

Veins bulged on Fasco's face from anger, his expression filled with rage.

He raised a wooden sword and threw it to Damian:— Get up on the arena. I'll fix your manners right now.

Damian took the sword and with a smirk said:— I'll gladly put you in your place.
