Chapter 1 - THE BOY WITHOUT A SPARK

Everyone in this world can do something amazing;summon fire; talk to shadows; bend reality with a flick of the wrist. Me? I trip over floating books and get ignored by doors. Literally. Magic doors won't open for me.

Some people call me special others call me useless I'm Ray the forgotten light and no I am not even exaggerating!

JANUARY

I was standing near the doorway, trying to make myself as small as possible. The room was buzzing with magic — little sparkles floating in the air, glowing trinkets, and everyone showing off their latest tricks like it was no big deal. And then there was me..Just me...

My parents were in the middle of the group, smiling like everything was fine. But when they said my name, I felt it — that weird silence that wasn't really silence, like I didn't belong.

Today was some sort of family gathering party

And of course my parents were the hosts

For generations and generations my family, the Hoshikawa, has been so called titled the most powerful ability and VeRy honored

Also if you're wondering the ability name is "the day the night sky sleeps"

Mainly we have space themed abilities

My younger brother Erin, 9yrs old,so far can make hand sized suspicious stars out of thin air which he just loves throwing at people...how how could I forget!

Erin the perfect child also can make bite sized black holes!

Anyways back to the story..

I decided to just watch TV and ignore but I couldn't help but watch my brother play with my cousin some warped sort of tennis but with stars.

"you seem quite deep in thought today ray ray," Andre said right behind me while wrapping his arm around me

"please don't call me that,"I mumbled

"I just wonder what your thinking," Andre nonchalantly said as he sat next to me

His hand was 1 inch away from touching my messy dark blue hair but I dodged it.

"don't even think of reading my mind!" I squeaked.

"come on!" he pestered"you don't have to be so secretive! "

I decided that my room would be a much better place to chill in so I turned of the TV and made my way upstairs...

Until I overheard what my parents were saying across the room

"Ray's… quite the unique boy," Mom said, her smile a little too tight.

Unique. That's what they called it.

Dad jumped in like he was trying to smooth things over. "You know how kids usually start showing magic early? He's just taking his time."

Taking his time? Sounds more like I'm broken.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as Mom laughed nervously. "Some lights take longer to ignite ."

Yeah, like mine's still stuck in the dark.

One of their friends looked at Dad with that polite-but-curious look. "But he hasn't shown anything at all?"

"No, nothing yet," Dad said, rubbing the back of his neck like he was embarrassed. "It's… unusual, but we're hopeful."

I felt my face heat up. Hopeful. Like I'm some project that might turn on someday. The magic around me felt colder, louder, like it was mocking me.

I went back into my room Maybe then I wouldn't be the forgotten light in a house full of stars...
