The living room glimmered under the soft glow of fairy lights. Bowls of popcorn, chocolate, and soft drinks were scattered across the carpet. Laughter bounced off the walls, the air filled with excitement and teasing.
Kabir clapped his hands. "Group dance time! Everyone pair up!"
Groans of protest quickly gave way to laughter as pairs formed: Aryan with Anika, Ishani with Aarav, Kabir with Maya, Arjun with Siya di, Aakash with Kiara. Ravi stepped forward with a confident grin. "Ryu, you're with me."
I gave a polite smile, heart fluttering nervously, but before I could adjust, Rey appeared and gently took my hand. Our fingers intertwined, and suddenly, the room shrank to just the warmth of his touch.
Ryu's POV
My chest tightened. Dancing with Rey felt thrilling, grounding, and confusing all at once. Every brush of his fingers sent shivers through me. I glanced at Ravi—his eyes on me, smiling politely but with something unsaid. My stomach twisted. I was giving pieces of my heart to someone else, and I couldn't stop.
Across the room, Maya guided Kabir in exaggerated spins. His stiff moves made her laugh uncontrollably, and I couldn't help but smile softly at their playful banter.
Rey's POV
Seeing everyone dance, I felt protective. I couldn't let anyone else steal her attention—not Ravi, not Kabir, not even Maya's teasing. When Ryu stumbled slightly, I steadied her instinctively. Our eyes met for a fleeting moment, and I realized I didn't want to let go.
Ravi's POV
Her gaze wasn't on me. Every laugh she shared, every glance toward Rey, cut me in ways I couldn't hide. I spun her lightly, forcing a grin, but my chest ached. I could see the bond she had with Rey, grounding and intimate, and I knew she was slipping away.
The music ended, and everyone erupted in applause. Aryan and Anika collapsed laughing, Ishani and Aarav hugged each other, Kabir wiped his face from laughing too hard, and Maya teased him mercilessly.
"Truth or Dare!" Anika shouted, pointing at Maya.
"Truth," Maya said with a smirk.
Kabir leaned forward. "Call your mom and tell her you're running away with a movie star."
Maya theatrically picked up the phone. "Hello, Mom? I'm eloping with Salman Khan."
Laughter exploded. Ishani nearly toppled, Aarav rolled on the floor, and Siya di buried her face in her hands. Arjun's off-key singing dare had the room in stitches.
Truth or Dare Chaos
Kabir turned to Avyaan. "Truth or Dare?"
"Dare," Avyaan said confidently.
"Eat a raw chili." Kabir's eyes twinkled. Avyaan groaned but complied, the room bursting into laughter as he fanned his mouth.
"Kiara?"
"Truth."
"Who do you secretly like?"
Her cheeks turned pink. "I… I don't like anyone," she mumbled, hiding behind her hair.
Aakash smirked. "Your turn, Arjun!"
"Truth," he said easily.
"Have you ever played a prank on your siblings?" Kabir asked.
Arjun grinned. "Yes… once I swapped their shampoo with honey. They screamed for an hour."
The room erupted again.
"Ishani?"
"Dare."
"Show your best dance move in front of everyone!" Ishani leapt up and twirled dramatically, while Aarav tried to mimic her and ended in a clumsy fall.
"Anika!" Kabir's eyes gleamed.
"Truth," she said warily.
"Who in this room annoys you the most?" Kabir asked, smirking.
Anika's eyes sparkled mischievously. "Honestly… my brother Rey thinks he's so cool, and Aarav… well, he's just a drama king. I can't even! They're hopeless!"
The room erupted into laughter. Rey groaned, hiding his red face behind his hands, while Aarav dramatically threw his arms up in protest. Kabir chuckled, clearly proud of the chaos he'd caused.
"Aryan, Truth or Dare?"
"Dare," Aryan said quickly.
"Do ten jumping jacks while making a funny face." Aryan complied, pulling exaggerated expressions. Laughter rolled across the room.
"Siya di," Kabir finished. "Truth or Dare?"
"Truth," she replied.
"Who do you think is the most annoying?"
"Definitely you, Kabir," she said with a smirk.
Ryu's POV
I watched, torn. The teasing and laughter were lighthearted, but my chest tightened every time Rey's gaze lingered on me. His warmth and attention made my pulse race. Ravi stood nearby, pretending to joke and tease, but I saw the unspoken longing in his eyes.
Rey's POV
Every laugh Ryu shared, every playful dodge she made, made my chest ache. I held her hand firmly, grounding her, keeping her close, while jealousy and protectiveness flared inside me.
Ravi's POV
Her attention wasn't mine. Every small smile she gave Rey twisted my chest. I laughed and participated in the teasing, hiding my pain, but I noticed every glance, every flicker of emotion. She might not see it, but I did.
Later that night, sleep brought no relief.
I stood in a dark corridor, shadows twisting around me. A boy appeared—sharp jawline, dressed like a mafia prince, eyes dark and mysterious. Then a smaller version of me emerged, hollow-eyed. Her voice whispered: "You are a burden."
I gasped and woke in a panic. My chest tightened, breath short.
Maya's hands steadied me. "Ryu! Breathe. In… out…"
Rey held my shoulders, firm. "Look at me. You're safe."
Ravi hovered, anxious, trying to lighten the panic with faint jokes. Arjun and Aakash froze, unsure. Siya di ran for water. My uncle's calm voice cut through the chaos: "Keep her calm. Give her medicine if it happens again."
Slowly, I steadied my breathing. The word burden lingered in my chest.
By morning, mist hugged the hills. I walked silently, lost in thought. My foot slipped, and Maya caught my hand, Rey steadied my shoulder.
In my room, Maya handed me coffee. "Talk to me. What's bothering you?"
I clutched my sketchbook. "I… I saw a man. And a boy. I tried to draw them."
Maya studied it. "Dreams aren't real, Ryu. Focus on today. We have a long morning ahead."
By noon, we arrived at the bustling market. Colors, smells, and sounds enveloped us—spices, fried snacks, laughter, and vendors calling. I wandered through stalls, occasionally glancing at the group: Rey, Maya, Aakash, Arjun, Anika, Aarav, Avyaan with family, Ishani, Aryan, Kiara, Kabir with parents, my uncle, grandmother, Ravi, Siya di.
Aarav and Anika tugged at Maya, begging for cotton candy. Maya and I bought a bundle. I handed pink clouds to Arjun, Aakash, Rey, and Ravi. Maya distributed the rest.
When Rey reached for his, our fingers brushed, warmth spreading through me.
Rey's POV
Her smile, delicate and fleeting, burned into my mind. She wasn't a burden—not to me, not ever.
Ravi's POV
I stood slightly apart, cotton candy untouched. Her heart wasn't mine. Yet I would protect her, always, even if it hurt.
