Chapter 4 - The Voice I Found

The message stayed on her screen like smoke on glass.

You've made your move.

Now it's ours.

R.J.

Amara read it again, but her hands didn't shake this time.

She didn't run.She planned.By morning, the building buzzed with unease.

People looked at her like they knew something or were afraid she did. Amara walked the halls with her spine straight, phone locked in her hand, her rebuilt file saved three different ways, encrypted and ghosted across burner drives.Seth hadn't responded to her last email. He hadn't called. He was gone when she arrived. That silence made her nervous. But not enough to stop her.

At 10:47 a.m., she walked into the executive archive room. Lights dim. The door locked behind her.

The folder she'd resurrected from the company's ashes sat on a flash drive beside her. She pressed a record on her phone.

This is Amara Leigh, executive assistant at Caldwell Group International. The information I found in this file has been hidden for three years. If anything happens to me, this is my voice. This is my line in the sand. She breathed.Steadier now.

And sent the full file and the recording to three major journalists, anonymously. Then she stared at the screen.A second longer than necessary. The hairs on her neck prickled.

She wasn't alone. She turned slowly.Raymond Jennings stood in the doorway.Alone.

But holding something she didn't expect. Her phone."Looking for this?"

Amara's stomach turned. Her hand reached instinctively toward the desk. He moved first.Fast.In a flash, he slammed the door behind him, stepping between her and the computer."You're smarter than you look," he said quietly. "But not smart enough to know when to stay silent.""I sent it," she lied.

He laughed. "No, you didn't. You were about to. That's why I waited."

His hand flexed at his side, not a punch, no. He was too clean for that. But it's still dangerous.

"You think you're the first one to dig around here?" he said. "The others didn't get far. You? You made it interesting. I'm not afraid of you,she said, though her voice shook."Then you should be." He moved toward her, crowding the space, voice low.

"You think Seth will protect you? He built his career on silence. He'll throw you under the bus to save his company. Just like he did with the others."

Her eyes narrowed. "That's not who he is."Raymond smirked. "You don't know who anyone is."The next moment happened fast. The door burst open behind them.

Seth.No security this time. No assistant. Just him and fire in his eyes.

"Step away from her," he said, deadly calm.Raymond smiled. "You're a little late."

"Amara," Seth said, not looking away. "Are you hurt?""No," she breathed. "But he has my phone."Raymond raised it mockingly.

Seth took one slow step forward. "You put one more finger on her, I swear—"

"What, you'll resign? Cry to the press?" Raymond's voice turned mocking. "You've always been soft."Seth's eyes went cold. "No. I'll ruin you. Publicly. Permanently.

Amara moved behind Seth, heart hammering.

She whispered, I did send the file. I lied. He doesn't know that.Seth's jaw tightened and then he smiled.Raymond saw it too late. The door behind them opened again. Security. Two men, the board chair, and HR.

"I'd like to press formal charges," Seth said calmly, eyes still on Raymond. "Threats.,extortion, harassment and obstruction of internal investigations." Raymond's face cracked."You planned this," he hissed. No, Amara said. I did.

Two hours later, the file hit every major news outlet.

Seth held a press conference. Announced internal changes. Owned his silence. He didn't protect his legacy. He protected the truth and Her.

Amara resigned the next morning, Not because she was afraid. But because she wasn't small anymore.

Six Months Later, A quiet bookstore in the city. She was browsing biographies when she felt a presence behind her, steady and familiar."Looking for something dangerous?" Seth's voice. She turned slowly.

He looked tired, softer around the edges, but entirely unchanged where it mattered.

You found me," she said."I never stopped looking."He handed her a small envelope. Inside was a worn flash drive. "You kept it," she whispered."I kept everything."

And this time, when he kissed her, it wasn't forbidden. It was the beginning.
