Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Albion… Until We Meet Again

Azazel carried Vali away.

Serafall also left with Sona and Tsubaki.

Both sides had gained a lot from this visit, leaving Azazel and Serafall with heavy thoughts.

Though Serafall had a cheerful chat with Ren earlier, the heavy intel afterward weighed on her.

After Azazel left with Vali, Ren turned toward the unconscious fallen angels.

The system's transformation process activated automatically, and with muffled groans, the fallen angels' powers were stripped in an instant.

"Why so quiet now? Seeing your long-lost Lord Azazel..."

When the transformation ended, Ren looked meaningfully at Raynare, who'd remained silent.

Ren had been watching her reaction closely since Azazel showed up.

She had looked genuinely surprised and even joyful when she first saw him.

But then, when she saw that Azazel didn't even spare her a glance, her heart turned cold.

Especially when he didn't mention any of the low-class fallen angels at all—something that hit Raynare particularly hard, having once been one of them herself.

Ren started to wonder if this woman had developed Stockholm syndrome...

Or maybe it was the fault of that so-called Heart of the Fallen Angel. Look how twisted she'd become under its influence.

"My hateful master, what are you saying?"

Though she spoke in a teasing tone, her face was shadowed by a dark, bitter expression.

Ren didn't say more. He knew she wasn't directing her hatred at him...

Raynare walked over to the powerless fallen angels with a chilling smile.

"My terrible master, may I handle the cleanup?"

"No problem. Just make sure it's clean. Don't let Rias and the others suddenly find fallen angel corpses in Kuoh Town and trace them back to me... That would be a hassle to explain."

"Don't worry, master. There won't be a single trace left..."

That last sentence came with a heavy tone, making Ren raise his eyebrows.

Raynare glanced coldly at Mittelt and Kalawarna and said flatly:

"You two, follow me."

The two had been with her long enough to understand she was in a foul mood.

With no power or abilities now, all they could do was serve as punching bags.

They looked to Ren, desperation in their eyes.

Aside from Ren, only Kuroka and the others could restrain Raynare.

"What are you two looking at?"

Raynare, now at the doorway, shot them a glare filled with icy killing intent.

It pierced through them like knives. They trembled and walked forward with teary eyes.

Ren couldn't help but laugh.

"Come on now. You can handle the cleanup yourself. No need to drag them along—unless you plan to bury them too?"

As soon as he said that, the two girls sighed in relief and looked at Ren gratefully.

Raynare wasn't surprised. She just gave Ren a resentful glance.

Why didn't I get that kind of treatment back then...

If Ren had heard her thoughts, he'd probably reply, "I didn't even do much to you. Just made you work as a waitress."

But you tortured those two like crazy. At least be human about it...

Oh right... you're a fallen angel. Never mind.

Raynare scoffed, grabbed the unconscious fallen angels, and left.

"Hmph… I'm off to clean up now, my hateful master."

Yeah… that nickname's probably stuck for life.

Ren muttered silently in his mind.

Whether it was because Raynare moved too loudly, or did it on purpose, the unconscious fallen angels began to wake up.

"Raynare, what are you doing?"

"Where are you taking us?"

"Let us go, or when Lord Azazel finds out, you're finished!"

...

Raynare wasn't fazed. In fact, she started laughing.

"Hahaha—Lord Azazel? He abandoned you all long ago! A bunch of gullible idiots… though I guess I was one too."

"You morons better sit still while I vent. After that, I'll make sure to give you all a clean ending!"

Her black wings spread wide, and under the curses of the fallen angels, she soared into the sky.

After Raynare left, Ren once again brought out the Divine Dividing.

With the system's help, he removed them harmlessly and fed them into the system.

"This space is really something. Even consciousness feels like it's frozen in time here."

As soon as he touched it, Albion spoke.

Though time felt frozen inside that system space, Albion clearly sensed it was a unique realm.

"Now I kind of believe you might actually help the red one break free of the Sacred Gear."

"Up to you. For all we know, by the time you're both free, the world might've changed beyond recognition."

This kind of thing was fate-dependent. Based on how pets from various worlds had already been summoned—Kuroka the Nekomata, Lucemon the Digimon, Fou the not-quite-human creature—the scope only kept growing.

Inuyasha, Nurarihyon, Onmyoji, Gensokyo... so many worlds, so many beings.

Even if he was in the DXD world now, the chances of summoning someone local were still low. The multiverse was just too vast.

"Maybe... but even if I failed, this ending isn't too bad. I bet the red one feels the same."

Albion seemed at peace, fully aware of his fate.

Ren nodded slightly, returned to his seat, and said casually as the Divine Dividing disappeared:

"Well then, White Dragon Emperor Albion… until we meet again."
