The war was over.
The blood, the endless skirmishes, the screams of comrades falling in mud and fire—it all lingered in memory, but the silence in the Leaf today was deafening. Konoha's banners fluttered above rooftops. Civilians bustled with weary relief. Shinobi who survived limped through the streets, some wrapped in bandages, some carrying the weight of ghosts.
And at the heart of it all, the Hokage's Council Hall loomed, carved stone and wood radiating age and authority.
Inside, the tension was sharp enough to draw blood.
The Council Assembles
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat at the head of the chamber, his pipe unlit for once. Deep lines etched his face, but his eyes still carried the warmth of a teacher—even if shadowed by exhaustion. To his right sat the village elders, Homura and Koharu. To his left, Danzō Shimura, bandaged and silent for now, but his presence pressed heavy on the room like a coiled snake.
Clan heads lined the sides: Hiashi Hyūga with his pale eyes inscrutable, Fugaku Uchiha leaning back with arms crossed, Shibi Aburame hidden behind high collar and sunglasses, and others representing their bloodlines. Behind them, a few high-ranking jōnin observers, among them Sakumo Hatake—still weary from his own battles—and Minato Namikaze, calm, golden-haired, his gaze sharp yet respectful.
And standing at the center, before all their eyes, was Ryuzen.
The weight of a thousand lives pressed on his shoulders—not metaphorically, but literally. The whispers of the village already called him "Unbroken Vanguard," the man who withstood the tide, who slaughtered over a thousand enemy shinobi in the final days of the war. He hadn't asked for the title, but he bore it, his expression unreadable, his posture disciplined.
The silence stretched until Hiruzen's voice broke it.
"The Third Shinobi War has ended, and Konoha stands because of the sacrifices of its sons and daughters. Many names deserve honor—Minato Namikaze, whose daring strike crippled Iwagakure's supply lines, and Ryuzen, whose endurance at the front broke the enemy's will to fight."
A murmur rippled through the council. Some nodded in respect, others narrowed their eyes.
Hiruzen's gaze softened for a moment as he looked at Ryuzen. "Today, we recognize both triumph and cost. But there are… questions to be addressed."
The Debate Begins
Danzō leaned forward, voice low but cutting.
"Hiruzen, enough poetry. The boy is a weapon. Nothing more. He slaughtered a thousand shinobi in the span of days. Tell me—can such a power remain unchecked? Can we allow him to walk among civilians as if nothing has changed?"
The words stung, but Ryuzen did not flinch. His eyes remained steady, his breathing calm.
Homura coughed lightly. "Danzō has a point. Extraordinary ability can destabilize balance, especially with clans already cautious of each other."
Koharu's voice was harsher. "The boy's chakra output is unnatural. What if he turns against us?"
From the side, Fugaku Uchiha raised an eyebrow. "You fear strength? Or do you simply wish to control it, Danzō?" His tone dripped with disdain.
A dangerous spark lit in Danzō's lone visible eye, but he didn't rise to the bait. Instead, he gestured coldly at Ryuzen. "Root exists for this very reason. To take dangerous power and shape it for Konoha's benefit. Give him to me, and I will mold him into a tool that never falters."
The word tool rang in the hall.
Ryuzen said nothing. But inside—

His pulse slowed, not quickened. The System never lied. Something darker than politics was at play.
Minato's Turn
The council might have tilted toward Danzō then, had Minato not spoken.
"Forgive me, elders," Minato began, his voice smooth, steady. "But I cannot stay silent. Ryuzen is not a weapon. He is a shinobi of the Leaf—a comrade who has carried our banner farther than most of us could dream. If you call him a tool, then you dishonor not just him, but everyone who fights in our name."
Homura frowned. "You speak boldly, Namikaze."
Minato inclined his head, unshaken. "Boldness is needed when fairness is absent." His eyes turned to Danzō, calm yet piercing. "Root thrives in silence, in shadows. But shadows do not nurture loyalty—they only twist it. If you take Ryuzen into Root, you will smother what makes him strong: his will."
Fugaku's lips twitched. Even Hiashi allowed the barest nod of approval.
Danzō's fingers tightened on his cane. "And you think you can safeguard him? You think your soft words will prevent disaster?"
Minato's smile was faint but unyielding. "Not words. Trust. Ryuzen stood on the battlefield not because of orders, but because he chose to. That choice saved this village."
The weight of his conviction filled the chamber.
Ryuzen's Silence
Throughout it all, Ryuzen stayed still, letting Minato speak. But his mind was not idle.

Obsidian was here. Inside Konoha. The war was barely cold, and already a new shadow reached into the heart of the village.
Hiruzen finally raised a hand. "Enough." His voice carried authority that silenced even Danzō. "We will not shackle our heroes. Ryuzen will not be placed in Root. Until further notice, he remains a free shinobi of the Leaf, answerable to me and no one else."
Danzō's jaw tightened. "You are a fool, Hiruzen."
"Perhaps," Hiruzen murmured. "But better a fool who trusts than a tyrant who consumes."
The debate was closed. The council dissolved, murmurs echoing as clan heads filed out, leaving only shadows and silence.
Shadows in the Flame
As Ryuzen left the hall, Minato caught up, walking at his side. His tone was light, but his eyes serious.
"Not all battles are fought with kunai, Ryuzen. Some are fought with words—and I'll make sure you're not alone in either."
For the first time that day, Ryuzen allowed himself the faintest nod of gratitude.
But as he passed beneath the Hokage Monument, he paused. The eternal flame that burned there flickered strangely. And in its reflection, he saw it—
A silhouette cloaked in shimmering black crystal, faceless, watching.
[System Warning: Obsidian agent confirmed.]
[Intrusion Level: Severe. Village compromised.]
The figure vanished as quickly as it appeared. No one else seemed to notice.
But Ryuzen knew.
The war was over.
A darker one had just begun.
Author's Note
The War Arc is finished—but the Obsidian Arc begins here. Ryuzen's greatest enemy may not be an army, but an invisible hand reaching into Konoha itself.
