Chapter 64 - Chapter 63 – The Spirit Tree’s Calling

The first snow of winter had settled softly over the valley, turning the forest paths into silver ribbons under the fading evening light. Charlisa walked beside Kael, her hand tucked into his, as Elder Naram led them up the gentle slope behind the village. There was a calmness in the air—one that felt expectant, almost sacred.

"Tonight," Elder Naram began, his voice steady despite the cold, "I will show you something only a few are ready to witness—a place where the past and future breathe together." Charlisa exchanged a quick look with Kael. Both felt a flutter of nervous excitement.

As they reached a clearing, the wind suddenly calmed, as though holding its breath. At the center of the space stood a tree unlike anything Charlisa had ever seen.

Its trunk twisted upward in a graceful spiral, the bark shimmering faintly like moonlit water. Dozens of tiny, floating orbs glowed around its branches—soft, warm lights that drifted like fireflies yet pulsed with awareness.

Elder Naram's voice softened to a whisper.

"This… is the Spirit Tree. It is said that kind, ancient spirits rest here—guardians of unborn souls. When a couple prays here, they do not ask for a child… they invite a soul. A soul with qualities they cherish."

Charlisa felt her arms prickle with goosebumps. The energy felt pure, almost maternal.

Around the tree, five to six couples had already gathered. Some were young, some older, some hopeful, some anxious—but all stood with reverence in their eyes. Each held a small offering: a flower, a carved wooden charm, a thread of red and white wool.

One by one, the couples stepped forward.

A young man and woman placed fresh wildflowers near the roots.

"We pray for a soul full of courage," the woman whispered.

"And compassion," the man added, touching her shoulder gently.

Next, an older couple—hands marked with years of work—offered a simple clay lamp.

"We ask for a soul with wisdom," the woman said.

"And patience, like the steady river," the man continued.

Another couple placed a feather and murmured,

"A soul who is creative, gentle, and full of imagination."

Charlisa watched, mesmerized, as the tree responded subtly to each offering—the orbs glowing a little brighter, drifting closer, as if listening.

When it was their turn, Charlisa felt her heart thudding. Kael squeezed her hand, grounding her. Together they approached the tree.

"What qualities do you seek?" Elder Naram asked softly.

Charlisa closed her eyes. In her mind, she spoke not to a deity but to the universe itself.

"We ask for a soul that is kind, filled with light, and will bring warmth wherever it goes."

Kael added, his voice steady,

"A soul that is balanced, strong in spirit, and able to love deeply."

The orbs gathered around them for a moment, circling like gentle spirits acknowledging their call. Charlisa felt a soft warmth bloom in her chest—like a silent blessing.

When the ritual ended, the couples slowly returned to their homes, lanterns glowing softly as they moved down the snowy path. Kael and Charlisa lingered a little longer, watching frost settle on the branches, feeling the pull of something larger than themselves.

That night, the full moon rose—wide, luminous, and commanding.

Inside their cottage, the fire crackled softly, casting golden shadows on the walls. Charlisa leaned into Kael's chest, her heartbeat syncing with his. There was tenderness in the air, an unspoken invitation.

But Kael gently cupped her face and shook his head.

"Not tonight," he whispered.

Charlisa looked up, surprised. "Why?"

"It's the full moon," he said with quiet conviction. "The elders believe that on this night, energies are too heightened—too restless. Conception under such a moon is unpredictable. I want our child to come with calmness and clarity… not from a night when the world is overflowing with wild magic."

Charlisa blinked, touched by the depth in his words.

"So you want to wait?"

Kael nodded, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek.

"Yes. I want it to be when both our hearts feel steady. When the night itself is peaceful."

She smiled softly, resting her head on his shoulder.

"Then we wait."

Outside, the moon continued its silent watch, brightening the snow-covered earth. Inside, Kael held Charlisa close—not with urgency, but with patience. The kind that shapes stories, families, and destinies.

In that quiet moment, their journey had truly begun.
