Chapter 69 - Chapter 68- Winter's quiet truth

The sun had dipped early, leaving the valley in a soft silver dusk. Snow clung to branches like whispered blessings, and breath turned into small clouds that rose and disappeared into the cold air.

Kael held Charlisa's hand as they walked back from the healer's hut.

She was quiet.

Not the peaceful kind of quiet—but the heavy, wordless quiet of a heart that had waited, hoped, and now wasn't sure what to feel.

When they reached their cottage, Chalisa sat near the fire, staring at the flame as if the answer might dance out of it.

Kael knelt beside her.

"Char… talk to me."

She shook her head softly. "I thought… after the Spirit Tree, after all the signs… maybe this autumn…" Her voice trembled. "But the season passed, Kael. Winter is here. And the healers said we must wait until next autumn again."

Her fingers tightened around the hem of her shawl.

"It feels like something inside me failed."

Kael immediately cupped her face.

"Hey. No."

His voice was firm, warm, grounding.

"You didn't fail. You didn't lose anything. Our child will come in their own time—not because of a season, not because of a ritual, but because the universe will send the soul meant for us."

Charlisa's eyes glistened. "But what if—"

"There is no 'what if.'"

He leaned his forehead to hers.

"We are together. That's the only thing that matters."

A soft knock came at the door.

It was Elder Neerin—white-haired, wrapped in thick wool, eyes holding more winters than anyone else in the valley.

She stepped in quietly.

"I sensed your hearts were heavy tonight."

Charlisa straightened, wiping her eyes. "Elder… the season—"

Neerin nodded gently.

"Yes. Autumn is the most auspicious season for conception in our valley. But my child, listen well…"

She touched Charlisa's hands with her weathered, warm fingers.

"Souls do not follow the calendar. Only humans do."

Charlisa blinked, surprised.

Neerin continued, "A kind, wise soul waits for the parents who are ready. Not the season that is convenient."

Kael tightened his arm around Charlisa.

Elder Neerin smiled.

"Winter is not a punishment," she said. "It is a season of preparation. A season of quiet tending. Your body, Charlisa, is gathering strength. Your mind is clearing. Your bond with Kael is deepening."

The elder's voice lowered to a soft whisper:

"And when autumn returns, you will not be the same woman who hoped this year. You will be stronger. Softer. Wiser. More ready to invite the soul you truly want."

Charlisa swallowed hard, tears rolling silently—this time not from pain, but from release.

Neerin rose slowly. "Do not let fear fill this winter. Let love fill it instead."

She left them with a blessing and closed the door behind her.

Kael kissed Charlisa's forehead.

"We prepare together," he murmured.

"And when the next autumn comes… we'll be ready."

Charlisa finally breathed—deep, steady, relieved.

"Together," she whispered.

Meanwhile there's Chaos Outside the Cottage

Rynar, trying to impress Lila that very same evening, decided to demonstrate his "famous snow-stalking technique."

The problem?

He chose the cottage roof as his observation point.

From inside, Kael and Charlisa suddenly heard—

THUD.

"I AM FINE!"

THUD AGAIN.

"THE ROOF IS SLIPPERY BUT I AM FASTER!"

"RYNAR, PLEASE COME DOWN!" Lila shouted.

Kael closed his eyes. "He's going to die."

Charlisa sniffled… then unexpectedly laughed.

The first laugh of her winter.

Outside, Rynar slipped, activated his hunter brain, flipped in mid-air, landed gracefully—

—then immediately walked into a tree.

Hunter brain: gone.

Lila sighed.

Kael groaned.

Charlisa smiled, her chest lighter.

Winter had begun

—but not with loss.
