Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

Obi-Wan interjected, "Is it not possible to persuade these neutral clans to align with your cause?"

Duke Adonai sighed, his expression grave. "I have made every effort, but they will only lend their support if I abandon my pacifist ideals. These clans demand the freedom to sustain their traditions while occupying their ancestral lands. However, I can't compromise on my principles. If I yield on this movement, I risk alienating the clans that have stood by me through thick and thin. They would lose trust in my leadership and begin to question the fairness of our policies."

He continued, "If that happens, they will start to demand concessions and special privileges, or worse, they might withdraw their support entirely. I have no choice but to remain steadfast in my convictions and follow the path I believe is right, even if that means facing death in my struggle to reform Mandalore and uplift her people."

Qui-Gon remarked thoughtfully, "A path few are willing to walk, especially in the pursuit of changing the status quo."

Obi-Wan asked, "Which clans are the most prominent among this neutral faction?"

Duke Adonai replied, "There are several prominent clans currently in play, including Knight, Skirata, Serdran, Tov'ra, Vhar'kar, and Drav'korr. House Vizsla, along with their allied clans, has mostly remained neutral for now. However, I have been in discussions with clan head Pre Vizsla, and I believe I can secure his support if I approach the situation correctly."

Curious, Qui-Gon said, "I've heard your steward mention Clan Knight. What can you tell us about them?"

Rubbing his chin, the Duke thought for a moment. "For the most part, they are a typical Mandalorian clan. They reside in the Kweving Heights to the north, where they control a beskar mine that has been part of their clan for centuries—a valuable resource for our people. They are an honorable clan that has followed the Resol'nare, or the Mandalorian code of conduct, since their founding. Recently, they have adopted the Supercommando Codex, a set of principles created by Jaster Mereel some years ago."

"What is this Supercommando Codex?" Obi-Wan asked, looking confused.

Duke Adonai explained, "The Supercommando Codex is essentially a modern interpretation of the Resol'nare. It serves as a guide for contemporary Mandalorians on how they should live and conduct themselves in society. Jaster Mereel preached that any Mandalorian who wished to fight should no longer engage in the shameful activities of raiders and brigands. Instead, he advocated that Mandalorian warriors should conduct themselves as highly-paid soldiers and honorable mercenaries, bringing a sense of dignity and purpose to our people while still holding true to our warrior heritage."

He paused, contemplating the impact of Mereel's teachings on the Mandalorian identity. "By adopting these principles, Clan Knight, like many others, aims to elevate the reputation of all Mandalorians and foster a sense of unity and respect among the clans, even in times of conflict. However, adhering to the Codex also means distancing ourselves from our more traditional justifications for combat, which poses a challenge for some clans that are deeply rooted in their old ways."

Qui-Gon Jinn leaned forward, his expression contemplative. "This codex appears to be a solid foundation for fostering positive change within your people, Duke Adonai."

Duke Adonai sighed, his brow furrowed with concern. "I agree that it is a step up from factions like the Death Watch, who revel in chaos and destruction. However, the Codex stands in direct conflict with the pacifist ideals I am striving to promote. My vision for our people is to shift their focus toward constructive endeavors rather than constant conflict, whether it be among themselves or driven by lucrative contracts."

Obi-Wan Kenobi, seated beside Qui-Gon, wore a thoughtful expression as he processed the Duke's words. Qui-Gon rubbed his chin, considering the implications of Adonai's stance. "This is indeed your conviction, and the path you have chosen is yours to define. It is not my place to question or attempt to alter your perspective. You summoned us here to discuss your daughter, Satine, correct?"

"Yes, that is correct, Master Qui-Gon," Duke Adonai replied solemnly. "I firmly believe it is in the best interest of my children to be away from here when hostilities emerge. I plan to send Satine to Coruscant, where she can work alongside our senator. This experience will equip her with the necessary skills and fortitude to navigate the complexities of governance and politics when she eventually takes on my role in the future."

"Are you concerned that someone might try to attack her?" Qui-Gon asked.

Duke Adonai hummed contemplatively before responding. "In a way, yes and no. As long as I'm here, their focus will be on eliminating me. However, if I were to die, they would inevitably shift their attention to Satine, given that she is the heir to the duchy and has been a strong supporter of our peace reform."

"I also fear they might resort to kidnapping her to manipulate me in this political struggle we're facing."

"Therefore, steering clear of this chaos is the greatest gift I can give her as a father, allowing her to be safe and free from this violent legacy."

Qui-Gon nodded in agreement. "We understand, Duke. When do you suggest we leave to ensure her safety?"

Duke Adonai took a sip of his wine. "I have a banquet planned for tomorrow night. It's the perfect opportunity for us to say our farewells. After that, you can leave without drawing too much attention. In the meantime, I'll arrange for the steward to prepare accommodations for both of you in the guest wing of the palace."

Qui-Gon accepted the Duke's hospitality. "We truly appreciate your generosity, Duke."

The steward then proceeded to lead Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon through the elegant halls of the duchy, adorned with intricate tapestries and artwork that depicted the history of Mandalore. They marveled at the opulent decor before reaching their rooms, where they settled in for the evening.

======

The following morning, Master and Apprentice joined the Duke and his family for a lavish breakfast in the grand dining hall. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, illuminating the rich colors of the room. The Duke's wife, Katherine, welcomingly gestured for them to sit. Satine, a graceful young woman, and her spirited sister, Bo-Katan, were also at the table.

"Welcome, Master Qui-Gon and Padawan Obi-Wan. Please, make yourselves comfortable," the Duke said, gesturing to the sumptuous spread of food laid out before them.

"A pleasure to meet you, ma'am," Obi-Wan greeted Katherine with a polite nod.

"You as well, young Jedi. Girls, say hello," Katherine smiled warmly, turning to her daughters.

"Hello!" both Satine and Bo-Katan chimed in, their voices bright and cheerful before they returned to their meals, exchanging playful banter about the latest Mandalorian customs.

As they enjoyed a delightful breakfast of fresh fruits, pastries, and rich Mandalorian stew, conversations flowed naturally. The group talked about their lives, with Obi-Wan and Satine discovering their shared interests—such as a love for exploring new places and a fondness for strategy games. The Duke and Duchess exchanged glances, amused by how quickly the two connected, noting their similar personalities and mutual respect.

Qui-Gon observed the dynamics of the group with a keen eye, sensing the budding friendship between Obi-Wan and Satine. He knew that such connections could be vital, especially in times of conflict.

After breakfast, Satine, Katherine, and Bo-Katan offered to show Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon around the city. The Duke insisted on sending a squad of guards along, ensuring their safety as they ventured into the bustling streets of Mandalore, filled with vibrant markets and lively citizens going about their daily routines. The rich history and culture of the planet came alive as they explored together, with Satine and Bo-Katan enthusiastically discussing their favorite sites and traditions.

======

While giving her guests a tour of the vibrant city, Satine's keen eyes caught sight of a group of people clad in armor, following a striking woman. In the lively streets filled with bustling shoppers, it was unusual to see anyone in armor, as most citizens wore casual attire, and the guards were usually stationed in specific areas. Satine observed the group as they moved from stall to stall, picking up a few items here and there, engaging in lighthearted conversation amidst the backdrop of colorful market stalls overflowing with produce and trinkets.

Studying the clan markings on their armor, Satine gasped softly, a mix of surprise and curiosity flickering across her face.

Katrine, sensing her daughter's sudden change in demeanor, turned to her and asked, "What's wrong, Satine?"

"Look, Mother! Over there is a group from Clan Knight. What are they doing here in the city?" Satine raised her arm, pointing curiously at the gathering of thirteen warriors making their way through the lively bazaar.

Katrine squinted to see the group more clearly, her expression turning from confusion to astonishment. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear as she spoke. "Well, I'll be! This is quite a surprise," she exclaimed, her voice filled with a mix of disbelief and intrigue.

At that moment, Obi-Wan approached Satine, his brow furrowing with curiosity. "Is there a problem? Did you say Clan Knight?" he inquired with genuine interest, sensing their change in expression.

Bo-Katan, full of energy, skipped around her sister, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. As Satine turned to Obi-Wan, she responded, "Yes, I did say Clan Knight. There's no problem; we are just surprised to see them here in the city. Typically, they remain either at their fortress in the north or are off on missions elsewhere in the galaxy."

Katrine took over the conversation, her voice steady and informative. "They have their own merchants. Whatever they can't grow or mine from their land, the merchants bring back from off-world or from the neighboring towns and cities. It's rare for them to come here to the capital," she explained, her gaze returning to the armored figures in the distance.

Obi-Wan followed her line of sight, taking in the scene. As he scrutinized the group of clan warriors, he noticed the woman at the forefront. She was striking, with platinum blond hair cascading down her back and bright purple eyes that seemed to catch the light, giving her an almost ethereal quality. An inexplicable feeling washed over him, a connection that he couldn't quite place.

Turning to Qui-Gon, his mentor, Obi-Wan was surprised to see him begin to walk toward the group, more specifically toward the captivating woman.

Noticing Qui-Gon's approach, the woman turned, her expression shifting from curiosity to recognition. With graceful strides, she made her way toward him, her presence commanding attention from those around her. As she drew closer, Obi-Wan could clearly hear her melodic voice.

"Well, I'll be! If it isn't you, Qui-Gon. I was wondering who I felt nearby," she said warmly, a smile spreading across her face as she walked elegantly toward his Master.

Obi-Wan quickened his pace to catch up with Qui-Gon. He was wondering about the connection between his Master and this enigmatic woman.

"Elyse, it is good to see you," Qui-Gon said warmly, a genuine smile spreading across his face as he clasped his hands together. "I felt your presence in the Force as I got closer to the planet."

Elyse smiled back, her purpler eyes twinkling with warmth. "You always did have a strong connection to the Force, even back in the Temple," she replied, her voice thick with nostalgia. Memories of the Temple flooded her mind: the sunlit corridors, the echo of younglings practicing their lightsaber forms, and the sense of community that had once enveloped her.

Obi-Wan, standing quietly to the side, listened closely to their conversation. He realized this was the Sentinel Elyse his Master had spoken of on the ship—the same Elyse who'd once patrolled the fringes of the galaxy, renowned for her wisdom and bravery.

Elyse's eyes turned toward Obi-Wan with an assessing gaze, a playful smile crossing her lips. "It looks like you finally took on a padawan—good for you, Qui-Gon. I always knew you would be a great teacher." Her voice held a note of teasing, but there was genuine praise in her words.

"I remember," Qui-Gon said, nodding appreciatively as he turned slightly, placing a reassuring hand on his apprentice's shoulder. "This is Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan, this is Elyse, whom I mentioned to you earlier."

Obi-Wan stepped forward, extending a hand politely. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Master Elyse. Master has told me about you." His tone was respectful, a mix of curiosity and admiration.

"Did he now?" Elyse replied, her voice playful and laced with a teasing challenge. "Nothing too bad, I hope, because you know I would retaliate, Jin." Her use of the nickname from their past brought a nostalgic smile to Qui-Gon's face.

A flicker of amusement danced across Qui-Gon's features as her teasing words sank in. Obi-Wan, sensing the lighthearted banter, quickly came to his Master's rescue. "All good things, Master Elyse," he assured her with a grin, glancing sideways at Qui-Gon, who was clearly enjoying the exchange.

Elyse chuckled softly, the kind of laugh that makes a room feel lighter. "Good to hear," she said, her excitement palpable as she reveled in the reunion.

Meanwhile, at a slight distance, Katrine and Satine exchanged incredulous glances, their eyes wide with astonishment. The revelation that Elyse, wife of the clan leader and known for her grace and poise, was also a Jedi knight was nothing short of shocking. They had only ever known her as a figure of nobility, never suspecting the layers of her identity buried beneath the surface.

The two women, momentarily lost in disbelief, quickly regained their composure. Sensing an opportunity to join the fascinating conversation, they made their way over, curiosity piqued.
