Chapter 114: A Divine Opportunity
Wu Yifan couldn't help but groan. Were all women this nosy? Prying into every little thing he did at noon—she wasn't his wife, so why act like she needed to enforce some household rules?
He sighed, "Ms. Liu, doesn't this seem… none of your business?"
"Technically, no. But you forget—I host *Witness* here in Beitian. These days, there's zero juicy content to air. We need something to keep viewers entertained. Don't you want to save my job?" Liu Wei pouted, her voice softening into a plea.
*Who'd dare fire you?* Wu Yifan rolled his eyes inwardly. Everyone knew Lady Liu ran roughshod over the TV station, pulling stunts that outraged viewers left and right. Yet from the director down to the interns, no one dared utter a word of protest. Now she was using this flimsy excuse to con him? Shameless, truly shameless. He hedged, "Lady Liu, it's really nothing serious. It's just… " He let his voice trail off, feigning hesitation.
"'Nothing serious'? So there *is* something?" Liu Wei's eyes lit up, instantly alert.
"Ahem. It's simple, really. My girlfriend suddenly took a turn for the worse—life-threatening. She wanted to see me one last time. I was so desperate to reach her, I flagged a taxi and bolted. Next thing I knew, the cops were onto me. The rest… well, you've heard." Wu Yifan injected a touch of sorrow into his tone.
"Your girlfriend's dying? You raced to see her one last time?" Liu Wei's eyes widened, clearly moved. Her tone lost its earlier sharpness.
"Yeah… sigh." Wu Yifan heaved a dramatic sigh.
Liu Wei was about to offer comfort when a niggling doubt crept in. This story sounded *way* too familiar—like a scene from those sappy Korean dramas, where the heroine gets into a car crash, and the hero tears through traffic to the hospital, only to miss her final breath. Besides, Wu Yifan didn't even have an official girlfriend. Sure, he and Ye Xiwen had chemistry, inching toward something real, but they weren't official. And Ye Xiwen was still bustling around Infinite, lively as ever—no word of illness, let alone near-death. Fury replaced her sympathy. "Wu Yifan, you're good—but not good enough to lie to me!"
A chill shot down Wu Yifan's spine, as if he'd been plunged into a winter storm. It felt like a cold wind was whistling through his skull.
"Wu Yifan, if you don't give me a straight answer today, I swear I won't let you off!" Liu Wei was truly enraged. She'd asked out of curiosity, sure, but no malice—when she heard about his noon rampage, she'd worried something terrible had happened, even thought of helping. Instead, he'd fed her one lie after another, treating her like a fool. It made her want to explode.
Wu Yifan sighed, "Lady Liu…"
"Don't call me that. We're not *that* close." She snapped.
Her sudden翻脸 left him choking. How could a woman switch moods so fast? He rubbed his temples, defeated. "Fine, you win. I'm scared—scared of you. But this… it's no small thing. If I tell the truth, it could throw all of Beitian into chaos, hurt a lot of people. I didn't want to drag you into it. I hoped you'd… "
His explanation softened her anger. She took a deep breath, "So you do have a conscience. But I'm not some coward who's afraid of death. With me, Liu Wei, in your corner—you'll be fine."
Listening to her fiery declaration, Wu Yifan half-expected her to start quoting Guo Jing, that fearless hero from the novels. He smiled wryly, but he couldn't help admiring her. This young woman, who'd squared off against thugs before, clearly had a strong sense of justice. Compared to some spineless men, she was a force to be reckoned with. "It's a big deal. We can't hash it out over the phone. You should… "
"I'm on my way." Liu Wei cut him off, hanging up before he could finish.
Staring at his still-buzzing phone, Wu Yifan felt a surge of helplessness.
This girl really acted first and thought later!
Fifteen minutes later, Liu Wei burst into the security booth without knocking—the second person, after Ye Xiwen, to dare such a thing. Wu Yifan rolled his eyes, wondering if she had no fear of walking in on something she shouldn't. Her temperament was eerily similar to Fu Junyao's.
"Spit it out. What happened? Did you assault some girl and make a run for it?" Liu Wei, who'd sprinted up the stairs, was breathless, her cheeks flushed. She grabbed the teacup Wu Yifan had been drinking from, chugged it, and pressed him.
"Ha!" Wu Yifan nearly choked on his own saliva.
This girl's personality was… *wild*. Even Fu Junyao wouldn't toss around such words so casually. There really was always someone bolder. It was almost admirable.
"Why the stare? Hurry up. You're full of surprises—lay low most days, then pull stunts that shake the city. Who'd you hurt? I'll help fix it. There's always a way." Liu Wei's tone made it clear she thought he was some kind of lothario.
"Right. I was planning to 'assault' the Li family's daughter—just haven't gotten around to it." Wu Yifan rolled his eyes.
"Haha! Bold words. Watch it—my dad might break your legs." Liu Wei propped her hands on the table, stretching slightly. Her full, firm chest strained against her shirt, as if threatening to burst free. The sensual sight made Wu Yifan's eyes nearly pop out.
"Maybe your dad's secretly hoping I make a move. Remember that matchmaking banquet? He said something about… " Wu Yifan teased.
"Shut up! That was just politeness, you idiot!" Liu Wei shot back, flustered.
"Could've fooled me." Wu Yifan deadpanned.
"Hey!" Liu Wei's eyes narrowed, looking ready to throw a full-blown shrewish tantrum.
Wu Yifan quickly stood, guiding her into his chair. His eyes darted around, then he leaned in, voice low. "Liu Wei, this is serious. Before we talk—answer me honestly. Deal?"
Liu Wei crossed her arms, "Spit it out. I've heard Eastern Coast's up to all kinds of illegal stuff. Tried sneaking in a few times to dig up dirt, but never found anything useful. Gave up eventually." She pouted, grumbling, "Did he cross you? Then find a way to take him down. That bastard struts around like he owns the place, making life hell for people."
Wu Yifan was speechless. *Just find a way to take him down?* This girl was colder than he was. Killing someone like swatting a fly—truly the most ruthless woman alive. He forced a smile, "Right. Here's what happened. A friend of mine got kidnapped by that bastard Qian Baoqing… " He told the story, half-truths, leaving out Qian Baoqing's conversation with Zhou Penglin.
"What? Forcing her into prostitution?" Liu Wei slammed a fist on the table, leaping to her feet.
"Exactly." Wu Yifan nodded, playing the good listener.
"Did you kill him?" Liu Wei snarled, swinging a hand like she was wielding a cleaver.
"Cough… cough…" Wu Yifan nearly face-planted.
This girl, for all her curves and seeming airheadedness, was *this* impulsive? Did she think Beitian was her family's backyard? It seemed women, when riled, were truly beyond ordinary comprehension.
He tapped her forehead lightly, exasperated, "Ms. Liu, I'm a security guard, not a hitman. I can't just kill someone. And with Qian Baoqing's connections? Please. Stop painting me as some brute, okay?"
"Useless." Liu Wei rubbed her forehead, scoffing.
Wu Yifan shot back, "Then prove *you're* not useless. Take down Qian Baoqing yourself."
"My dad's hated him for ages—wanted to teach him a lesson. Oops, didn't say that." Liu Wei clapped a hand over her mouth, then giggled, "But you can't just storm Eastern Coast like that. Bold move, though… hehe."
Wu Yifan's eyes lit up. Liu Qingyang and Qian Baoqing were enemies?
This was a divine opportunity.
