Chapter 697 - 1

HELP! I'M JUST AN EXTRA YET THE HEROINES AND VILLAINESSES WANT ME!C20

Chapter 20: Chapter 20

The week passed and William spent most of it training alone and letting his affinity gates continue opening naturally. His ribs had healed completely and his essence control was steadily improving.

He'd seen Seraphina and Lyanna around the academy but didn't approach either of them. Whatever tension existed between them wasn't his problem to solve, and he had better things to focus on than relationship drama he hadn't asked for.

The morning of departure arrived and William packed his supplies according to the equipment list. Survival gear, extra clothes, basic supplies, and his practice sword. He left the dormitory while Kai was still asleep on the couch.

The main courtyard was crowded with first-years gathering in their assigned groups. William found the area marked for Group 7 and saw Marcus already there organizing his pack.

Sara arrived shortly after looking excited. "Five days away from classes and training schedules. This is going to be great."

Seraphina appeared next and took a position near the edge of their group area, checking her equipment with focused efficiency. Lyanna arrived and set her pack down on the opposite side from where Seraphina stood.

Claire was the last to arrive, looking completely relaxed despite being late. "Morning everyone. Ready for a vacation?"

The faculty gave their standard briefing about safety protocols and emergency procedures, then groups began loading into transport carriages. Group 7 ended up in one carriage together, and the two-hour journey was mostly quiet with people either sleeping or watching the scenery.

The Vale was a large natural area with dense forests, clearwater streams, and moderate essence concentration that made it useful for training without being dangerous. The academy used it regularly for expeditions because it had enough variety to be educational but wasn't filled with deadly threats.

When they arrived and stepped out of the carriages, William immediately noticed the difference in atmosphere. The air was cleaner and the essence felt more natural compared to the academy's controlled environment.

"Your group's base camp location is marked on your maps," the supervising instructor said while handing Marcus their assignment packet. "Set up wherever you want within that zone. Complete your objectives by day five and return here for extraction. Have fun."

Marcus opened the packet and skimmed through it. "We need to document essence flora in three locations, map some terrain features, and write a report on environmental essence patterns. Nothing urgent. Looks like we have plenty of free time."

"Perfect," Sara said while shouldering her pack. "Let's find a good camping spot first."

The group hiked into the Vale following the map markers. The terrain was beautiful with sunlight filtering through trees and the sound of running water nearby. After about an hour they found a clearing near a stream that had good visibility and flat ground for tents.

"This works," Marcus said while setting down his pack. "Water source, defensible position, close to our objective sites."

They spent the next few hours setting up camp. Tents arranged in a loose circle around a central fire pit, supply cache organized under a waterproof tarp, and a basic perimeter established. By the time they finished, it was early afternoon and everyone was ready to relax.

Sara pulled out food supplies and started preparing lunch while Marcus gathered firewood. Seraphina found a spot near the treeline and began practicing sword forms. Lyanna sat near the stream with books spread around her, apparently using the trip as study time.

Claire stretched out on a flat rock in the sun looking completely content to do nothing.

William found a tree with good shade and sat down to practice his essence circulation exercises. His affinity gates were still opening gradually and he wanted to maintain the steady progress without forcing anything.

[Fire Affinity Gate: 43% Open]

[Wind Affinity Gate: 37% Open]

[Water Affinity Gate: 29% Open]

[Environment is optimal for natural cultivation]

The afternoon passed peacefully. People did their own things without much interaction. Sara tried to start a conversation a few times but seemed content when people didn't engage much.

By evening, Marcus had a proper fire going and Sara had prepared a meal that was significantly better than academy dining hall food. The group gathered around the fire to eat, and the atmosphere was relaxed.

"So what's everyone planning to do with five days of freedom?" Sara asked while eating.

"Train," Seraphina said simply.

"Read and work on assignments," Lyanna added.

"Sleep and enjoy not having schedule obligations," Claire said with a smile.

Marcus shrugged. "Probably explore the area a bit. Maybe fish in that stream."

William didn't answer and Sara didn't push him for one. They finished eating and people drifted back to their own activities. Seraphina continued training until it got too dark to see properly. Lyanna read by firelight for another hour. Claire just watched the fire with a contented expression.

William took first watch with Marcus, and they sat in comfortable silence while everyone else slept. The forest sounds were different from the academy's constant background noise of students and activity.

"You fought well in the tournament," Marcus said eventually. "That match with Liam was impressive."

"Thanks," William said.

Marcus didn't seem bothered by the brief response and they finished their watch without much more conversation.

Chapter 21: Chapter 21

The next morning started slowly. People woke up gradually and Sara made breakfast while others got ready for the day at their own pace. There was no rush or agenda since they had plenty of time to complete their objectives.

"I'm going to check out one of the documentation sites," Lyanna announced after breakfast. "Anyone want to come?"

"I'll go," Sara said. "Could be interesting."

Marcus decided to join them for security reasons, and the three headed out with mapping supplies. That left William, Seraphina, and Claire at the camp.

Seraphina went back to her training spot and resumed practicing forms. Claire remained by the fire reading a book she'd brought. William found his tree again and continued cultivation practice.

The day passed quietly. The mapping group returned around noon with samples and notes, looking satisfied with their progress. They ate lunch and then Sara suggested swimming in the stream since the afternoon was hot.

"The water's perfect," she said after testing it. "Come on, we're supposed to be relaxing."

Marcus and Sara ended up swimming while Lyanna stayed on the bank with her books. Claire watched with amusement but didn't join. Seraphina continued training. William stayed under his tree.

By the third day, the group had settled into a comfortable routine. Mornings were for light work on their objectives. Afternoons were free time. Evenings were for meals and whatever people wanted to do.

William noticed that Seraphina and Lyanna were still avoiding direct interaction with each other, but neither seemed bothered by it. They simply existed in the same space without acknowledging the tension.

Claire, on the other hand, had started paying more attention to William. Not in an obvious way, but she'd position herself where she could observe him and occasionally made comments.

"You're very focused on your cultivation," she observed one afternoon while William was practicing. "Most people would use this trip to slack off."

William didn't respond and Claire smiled before walking away.

That evening after dinner, Sara suggested they explore a nearby cave system that was marked on their map as having interesting crystal formations.

"Could be fun," she said. "And it might count toward our documentation requirements."

"I'll go," Marcus said.

Lyanna looked up from her book. "The crystals could have interesting essence properties. I'll come."

Seraphina shrugged. "Fine."

Claire agreed as well, which left William as the only one who hadn't responded. He considered declining but decided the cave might be worth seeing, so he nodded agreement.

They gathered supplies and headed out as the sun was setting. The cave entrance was about a thirty-minute hike from camp, and by the time they arrived it was dark enough that they needed light sources.

The cave was larger than expected with passages branching in multiple directions. The walls had crystal formations that glowed faintly with absorbed essence, creating enough light to see once their eyes adjusted.

"This is beautiful," Sara said while examining one of the larger crystal clusters.

Lyanna was immediately taking notes and measurements. "The essence concentration is higher here than outside. These crystals are acting as natural collectors."

They explored deeper into the cave system, with Marcus and Seraphina taking point to check for any dangers. The passages wound through the rock in complex patterns and occasionally opened into larger chambers.

In one of the larger chambers, they found a pool of water that was perfectly clear and seemed to glow from within. The essence concentration around it was noticeably higher.

"A natural essence spring," Lyanna said with interest. "These are very rare. The water is infused with concentrated essence that's filtered through the rock layers."

Sara immediately started taking off her boots. "I'm going in."

"Is that safe?" Marcus asked.

"She should be fine," Lyanna said while examining the water. "The essence is pure, not corrupted or dangerous. Probably beneficial for cultivation actually."

Sara waded into the pool and sighed. "This feels amazing. You guys should try it."

Claire was next, sitting on the edge and letting her feet dangle in the water. Marcus decided to stay on guard. Seraphina looked tempted but stayed near the entrance.

Lyanna eventually joined after confirming the water was safe, sitting beside Claire at the pool's edge.

William approached and tested the water with one hand. The essence concentration was indeed high, and he could feel his affinity gates responding to it. He sat down on a rock near the pool and focused on letting his essence circulate naturally with the environment.

[Environmental Essence: Highly Concentrated]

[Affinity Gate Response: Accelerated opening detected]

[Fire Gate: 43% → 45%]

[Water Gate: 29% → 32%]

[Optimal conditions for cultivation detected]

They stayed in the chamber for about an hour with people either in the water or near it, and the atmosphere was the most relaxed it had been since the expedition started.

"We should head back before it gets too late," Marcus eventually said. "Cave navigation in the dark isn't ideal."

The group gathered their things and made their way back to camp. The walk was quiet and comfortable, and by the time they arrived, everyone seemed content with the evening's exploration.

That night William took watch with Seraphina. They sat on opposite sides of the fire without speaking, and William found it preferable to forced conversation. Seraphina seemed to agree based on her lack of attempts to break the silence.

HELP! I'M JUST AN EXTRA YET THE HEROINES AND VILLAINESSES WANT ME!C22

Chapter 22: Chapter 22

The next morning started with Sara making her usual breakfast while everyone gradually woke up. The camp had fallen into a comfortable rhythm where people did their own things without needing constant group activities.

William was under his tree practicing cultivation when he heard voices approaching from the forest. He opened his eyes to see another group entering the clearing, with their academy uniforms marking them as fellow first-years.

"Hey, is this Group 7's camp?" called out a tall guy with red hair leading the other group.

Marcus stood up from where he'd been checking supplies. "Yeah. Do you guys need something?"

"We're Group 4," the guy said while his group filed into the clearing. "Our camp is about twenty minutes that way. We ran out of medical supplies after one of our members had an accident. Mind if we borrow some?"

"Sure," Sara said while digging through their supply cache. "What do you need?"

While Sara helped them with bandages and ointments, William noticed one of the Group 4 members staring at him with obvious recognition. The guy nudged his companion and whispered something, and William realized they probably recognized him from the tournament.

"You're William Cross right?," the red-haired leader said while walking over. "The guy who fought Liam like crazy in the tournament"

William nodded but didn't engage further. The guy seemed to take the hint and went back to his group after getting the supplies they needed.

"Thanks for the help," he said to Sara. "We're doing a group dinner tonight at our camp if you want to join. We got some decent food and it beats eating alone."

Sara looked interested. "That could be fun. What do you guys think?"

Marcus shrugged. "I'm fine with it."

Lyanna looked up from her book. "A change of scenery would be acceptable."

Claire smiled. "Why not."

Seraphina didn't respond but didn't object either. William remained under his tree and Sara took his silence as agreement.

Group 4 left with their supplies and directions to return later. The rest of the morning passed as usual with people doing their own activities.

Around mid-afternoon, Sara and Marcus decided to work on more documentation while Lyanna went with them to collect essence samples from a different location. That left William, Seraphina, and Claire at camp again.

William continued his cultivation practice while monitoring his affinity gates' steady progress. The Vale's environment was optimal for natural development and he could feel the gates opening gradually without strain.

"You've been practicing constantly since we arrived," Claire observed from her spot by the fire. "Most people would take a break."

William opened his eyes and found Claire watching him with that calculating expression she always had.

"Progress doesn't happen from breaks," he said simply.

"Fair point." Claire stood and stretched. "Though I wonder what you're progressing toward. You already made it to the semifinals despite starting so far behind everyone else."

William closed his eyes again without responding. After a moment he heard Claire's footsteps moving away.

Seraphina had stopped her training and was sitting near the stream sharpening her sword. William noticed she'd positioned herself where she could see both the camp and the forest approaches, maintaining awareness even during rest.

The afternoon passed quietly until the mapping group returned looking satisfied with their work. They had enough documentation now to complete their objectives with time to spare.

"We should head to Group 4's camp around sunset," Sara said while organizing her notes. "It should give us time to clean up and rest first."

Evening approached and the group prepared to visit the other camp. William changed into clean clothes and made sure his practice sword was secured properly, not expecting trouble but being prepared anyway.

The walk to Group 4's camp took about twenty minutes through forest paths that were well-marked. They could smell cooking food before they saw the clearing.

Group 4 had set up a larger camp than Group 7, with more elaborate cooking equipment and what looked like significantly better supplies. The red-haired leader, who introduced himself as Derek, welcomed them enthusiastically.

"Glad you could make it! We've got actual seasoned meat and fresh vegetables. Way better than the standard rations."

There were two other groups already there, making it about eighteen students total gathered in the clearing. Someone had started a large fire and people were scattered around in small clusters talking.

Sara immediately joined a conversation with some students from Group 9 who were discussing essence beast encounters. Marcus gravitated toward a group comparing combat techniques. Lyanna found herself talking with another House Luminara student about magical theory.

Seraphina took a position near the edge of the gathering where she could observe everything while Claire circulated between groups with easy social grace that she was naturally gifted with.

William found a spot away from the main clusters and sat down to watch. He wasn't interested in socializing but the atmosphere was relaxed enough that his presence wasn't required in conversations.

"You're William Cross."

He looked up to find a girl standing there with blonde hair and a confident expression. She sat down beside him without waiting for an invitation.

"I'm Elena. We fought in the second round of the tournament."

William remembered her as the wind mage he managed to beat. "I remember."

"You've gotten stronger since then," Elena observed. "Your essence signature feels different than before."

William didn't confirm or deny the observation but Elena didn't seem bothered by his lack of engagement.

"I'm not here to make friends or anything," she said bluntly. "I just wanted to say that match taught me something about my weaknesses. So thanks for that."

She stood and walked away before William could respond, leaving him slightly confused about the point of the interaction.

The evening continued with groups mingling and sharing food. Someone produced alcohol from somewhere and people started getting louder and more relaxed. William accepted food when it was offered but otherwise stayed on the periphery.

He noticed Seraphina hadn't moved from her observation position and Lyanna had found a quieter group to talk with about academic topics. Claire was currently engaged in what looked like a debate with Derek about combat tactics.

"Not much for parties?"

William looked over to find Sara sitting down beside him with a plate of food.

"Not really," he admitted.

"Fair enough." Sara ate quietly for a bit before speaking again. "You know people talk about you a lot. Mostly because of the tournament match and the way you improved so fast."

William didn't respond and Sara smiled.

"I'm not fishing for gossip or anything." She stood up. "Anyway, the food is not bad so you should eat more before it's gone."

She wandered back toward the main group and William was left wondering why people felt compelled to share their observations about his life.

The gathering continued for several hours before groups started heading back to their own camps. Group 7 made the walk back together with Sara chatting about the evening while others listened with varying degrees of attention.

Back at their camp, people dispersed to their tents without much discussion. William took watch with Marcus again and they sat in comfortable silence under the stars.

"That was more socializing than I expected for an expedition," Marcus commented eventually.

"Could have been worse," William said.

They finished their watch and woke Lyanna and Claire for the final rotation. William lay in his tent afterward thinking about the evening and the various interactions.

People kept approaching him to make observations or comments about the tournament or his progress. He wasn't sure what they expected from these interactions, but he found them mostly pointless.

And so the night ended.

HELP! I'M JUST AN EXTRA YET THE HEROINES AND VILLAINESSES WANT ME!C23

Chapter 23: Chapter 23

The fifth morning arrived with everyone expecting it to be their last day in the Vale. Sara was already up making breakfast when William emerged from his tent, and the smell of cooking food mixed with the forest air created a surprisingly pleasant atmosphere.

"It's the last day," Sara said cheerfully while tending the fire. "When we get back it's back to classes and training schedules tomorrow."

Marcus was organizing their packed supplies near the clearing's edge, double-checking that everything was accounted for and ready for transport. Lyanna sat nearby reviewing her documentation notes one final time while Seraphina performed her morning sword practice routine with the same focused intensity she had maintained throughout the trip.

Claire was the last to emerge from her tent, looking completely unbothered by the early hour despite everyone else being active for at least thirty minutes.

"Morning," she said while stretching lazily. "Are we really going back today? I was just getting comfortable here."

"The extraction is scheduled at noon," Marcus said while consulting the official schedule. "We have a few hours if anyone wants to do final exploring or documentation."

William had already finished his morning cultivation practice under his usual tree and was currently eating the breakfast Sara had prepared. The food was simple but filling, and he had appreciated not having to deal with the academy dining hall's crowds for almost a week.

The group finished breakfast and began breaking down camp with practiced efficiency. They brought down their rent and rolled it, then supplies were organized into carry packs, and the fire was properly extinguished. By mid-morning they were completely ready for extraction with everything neatly arranged near the clearing's edge where carriages would arrive.

Slowly noon approached. The group waited in various positions around the packed supplies with weapons ready and nothing to do but watch for transport.

But noon came and went.

"Maybe they're running a bit late," Sara suggested after fifteen minutes had passed. "Traffic or something?"

Lyanna frowned while rechecking her schedule document. "The academy is usually very precise about these kind of things"

Another thirty minutes passed with no sign of carriages. The group started exchanging looks that ranged from confused to mildly concerned.

"Should someone scout toward the main road to see if there's a delay?" Marcus asked while examining their map. "Maybe they're stuck somewhere and need help."

"We are at the designated extraction coordinates," Seraphina said flatly. "If they're coming here, this is where they'll arrive."

Claire looked more amused than worried. "Well this is interesting. What do we do if they just never show up?"

"They'll show up," Lyanna said with confidence that seemed slightly forced. "The academy doesn't abandon students in training areas."

Another hour crawled by with the group sitting or standing around their packed supplies in increasingly awkward silence. The sun was past its peak and afternoon was settling in without any sign of transport.

"Alright," Marcus finally said while standing up decisively. "We should probably set camp back up. There's no point sitting here uncomfortable if we're stuck for another night."

Nobody argued with the logic. Within minutes, everyone was pulling tents back out and reorganizing the camp they'd so efficiently dismantled that morning. The process felt oddly deflating after being so ready to leave.

"I can't believe this," Sara muttered while re-pitching her tent. "We were supposed to be back for dinner at the academy tonight."

"Could be worse," Claire said while helping organize supplies back under their tarp. "We could be stuck somewhere actually dangerous instead of a relatively safe training area with adequate food and water."

The camp was re-established within an hour and people settled back into the routines they had developed over the previous days. William returned to his tree for more cultivation practice since there was nothing else productive to do with unexpected free time.

Sara started preparing an early dinner using their remaining supplies while Marcus inventoried what they had left.

"We've got enough food for maybe three more full days if we're conservative," he announced after counting. "Four if we start rationing. Water isn't really a problem with the stream."

"Let's hope it doesn't come to rationing," Lyanna said while pulling out one of her academic texts. "I refuse to believe the academy would leave us here long enough for our situation to become critical."

Seraphina had resumed her training practice with more intensity than before, apparently channeling frustration about the situation into productive physical activity. Her sword forms were precise and powerful as she moved through combinations that would have overwhelmed most opponents.

Claire watched Seraphina's practice with calculating interest before settling near the fire with a book she had brought. "At least we have entertainment," she said to nobody in particular.

The afternoon dragged on with the group scattered around camp in their established positions. William continued working on his essence circulation while monitoring his affinity gates' steady progress. The fire gate was so close to fifty percent that he could almost feel it about to cross the threshold.

[Fire Affinity Gate: 49% Open]

[Environmental conditions optimal for final advancement]

[Estimated time to 50%: 6-8 hours of focused cultivation]

He settled into deeper meditation and focused on drawing fire essence from the environment around him. The Vale had natural concentrations of various elements and fire was particularly abundant in the warm afternoon air and sunlight filtering through the forest canopy.

Hours passed without William noticing until Sara's voice pulled him back to awareness.

"Dinner's ready. You've been sitting there for like four hours straight."

William opened his eyes and realized the sun was significantly lower in the sky. His body was stiff from the extended meditation but his essence pathways felt energized and clear.

The group gathered around the fire for dinner and the conversation naturally turned to their situation.

"So what do we think happened?" Sara asked while distributing food. "Did the academy just forget about us?"

"That's unlikely," Lyanna said. " What's more probable is some kind of logistical issue or emergency that delayed transport."

"Or this could be intentional," Seraphina suggested while eating methodically. "Testing how we handle unexpected situations and resource management."

That possibility created a moment of silence as everyone considered it. The academy was known for unconventional teaching methods and testing students in ways they didn't expect.

"That would be pretty harsh," Marcus said eventually. "Leaving us here without explanation just to see what we do?"

"But it's effective," Claire added. "You learn a lot about people when plans fall apart and they have to adapt."

"Well if it is a test, we're passing so far," Sara said optimistically. "We have shelter, food, water, and everyone's staying calm. We could actually be doing a lot worse."

The evening continued with the group settling into comfortable conversation about various topics unrelated to their situation. Someone told stories about embarrassing training accidents, which led to others sharing their own experiences with failed techniques or essence control mishaps.

William listened without contributing much but found the casual atmosphere more tolerable than forced socialization. These were people who'd spent almost a week together and had developed enough familiarity that silence wasn't awkward and conversation didn't feel obligatory.

As darkness settled, Marcus organized the watch schedule. "It's the same rotation as before. Two people with two-hour shifts. It should get everyone adequate sleep."

William ended up on second watch with Lyanna, which was the first time they had been paired since the expedition started. They sat on opposite sides of the fire without speaking for the first thirty minutes.

The forest at night was alive with sounds that were both peaceful and slightly unsettling. Small animals moving through underbrush, wind rustling leaves, the occasional call of nocturnal birds. The fire crackled steadily and provided enough light to see the immediate camp area while leaving everything beyond in shadow.

"Your essence control has improved significantly," Lyanna finally said while staring into the flames. "I've been monitoring the fluctuations in your signature and they've stabilized over the past few days."

William glanced at her but she wasn't looking in his direction. "The environment here is good for cultivation," he said simply.

"It is," Lyanna agreed. "I've made progress on my own techniques as well. The natural essence concentration makes it easier to refine control."

Another long pause filled only with fire sounds and forest ambience.

"About what happened before the expedition," Lyanna continued in a careful tone. "I may have overreacted to the situation with Seraphina. That wasn't fair to you."

William considered his response. He could accept the apology and try to smooth things over, or he could be honest about not particularly caring either way. He chose honesty.

"You felt how you felt," he said neutrally. "I'm not going to apologize for something that wasn't what you thought it was, and you don't need to apologize for having a reaction."

Lyanna was quiet for a moment before nodding slightly. "Fair enough."

They finished their watch in silence that felt less tense than before, though not exactly comfortable. When their two hours ended, William woke Marcus and Claire for the final shift and returned to his tent.

He lay there thinking about the day and the uncertainty of their situation. If this was a test like Seraphina suggested, then the academy was watching to see how groups handled adversity and unexpected changes. If it was just a logistical problem, they'd probably be picked up tomorrow.

Either way, William wasn't particularly concerned. He had cultivation to focus on, his affinity gates were progressing as well, and being stuck in the Vale was preferable to being stuck in classes he found mostly tedious.

The fire gate was so close to fifty percent now that he could feel it like pressure waiting to be released. Maybe another day of focused cultivation would push it over the threshold and he'd finally have access to actual fire techniques instead of just sensing the element.

Sleep came gradually with William's mind still processing the day's events and planning for tomorrow's cultivation practice.

The sixth day in the Vale had been unexpected but not unpleasant. They had adapted quickly to the changed situation and the group dynamic remained stable despite the uncertainty.

If they were stuck here for a few more days, William could think of worse ways to spend time than cultivating in an essence-rich environment while avoiding academy social dynamics and relationship complications.

He drifted off to sleep with the sounds of the forest around him and the warmth of residual fire essence still circulating through his pathways from the day's intensive practice.

HELP! I'M JUST AN EXTRA YET THE HEROINES AND VILLAINESSES WANT ME!C24

Chapter 24: Chapter 24

The next morning arrived and Sara was already moving around the camp making breakfast. William emerged from his tent to find the sun just breaking through the forest canopy and the air still carrying the cool freshness that usually came at night.

"Day seven in paradise," Sara announced while tending the fire. "We're officially past the scheduled extraction by two full days."

Marcus was doing a perimeter check while Seraphina had already started her morning training routine. Lyanna sat near the stream as usual, with her books spread around her in the morning light. While Claire was still in her tent, apparently not a morning person despite the days they had spent here.

William took his position under his tree and began his morning cultivation practice. He was so close to reaching a threshold for his fire gate, and since he didn't know how long he would be here he had to take advantage of his environment which provided great conditions for advancement.

He had been practicing for maybe thirty minutes when Lyanna approached with a book in her hands and sat down nearby without asking permission.

"I have been reviewing the essence theory we covered in Professor Ashcroft's class," she said while opening the book. "There's a section about elemental affinity awakening that I wanted to discuss."

William opened his eyes and looked at her. This was the first time since before the expedition that Lyanna had approached him for academic discussion like she used to during their project work.

"What about it?" he asked.

Lyanna seemed to take his response as an invitation to continue. "The text describes how affinity gates open naturally over time but can be accelerated through exposure to concentrated elemental essence. Your gates have been opening unusually fast, which means that you have either exceptional natural talent or extended exposure to high-concentration environments."

She pulled out her notes and started explaining her analysis of various awakening patterns while William listened. Her teaching style was clear and systematic, breaking down complex concepts into understandable components.

"So theoretically," Lyanna continued while showing him a diagram, "if someone had multiple affinity potentials, they could develop them simultaneously if exposed to the right environmental conditions for extended periods."

"Like spending a week in an essence-rich area," William said.

"Exactly." Lyanna's expression showed genuine enthusiasm for the topic. "Which means this extended stay might actually be beneficial for anyone in the early stages of affinity development."

They discussed essence theory for another hour with Lyanna occasionally referencing her textbooks and notes. It felt like their old study sessions before everything had gotten complicated, and William found the academic focus preferable to relationship drama.

From her training position near the treeline, Seraphina had paused between forms and was watching their interaction. Her expression was carefully neutral but her grip on her practice sword was tighter than necessary, and she had stopped her training routine entirely to observe.

William didn't notice the attention because he was focused on the diagram Lyanna was explaining, but Sara caught it while preparing ingredients for the day's meals.

She glanced between Seraphina's tense posture and William's casual academic discussion with Lyanna, and a small knowing smile crossed her face before she went back to her work.

The morning continued with Lyanna and William discussing various theoretical concepts until Sara called that breakfast was ready. The group gathered around the fire and ate while talking about how to spend another day with no clear extraction timeline.

"We could explore further from the camp," Marcus suggested. "Maybe map some areas we haven't documented yet to get us a few points."

"Or we could just relax," Claire said while finally emerging from her tent looking perfectly put together despite sleeping in the forest. "We're not on a schedule anymore."

"I want to check out that cave system again," Sara said. "The essence concentration there was really interesting and I didn't take enough notes last time."

After breakfast, Marcus and Seraphina decided to scout the surrounding area for potential threats or interesting features. Lyanna wanted to collect more plant samples for her documentation. That left William, Sara, and Claire at the camp.

Sara settled near William's tree with some kind of craft project she had apparently brought, working with plant fibers to create what looked like a bracelet.

"You know," Sara said while working, "I've been at the academy for a few months now and I don't think I've ever seen you at any of the social gatherings except that one time I dragged you to the courtyard meeting."

"It's not really my thing," William said while continuing his cultivation practice.

"Yeah, I got that impression." Sara tied off a knot in her bracelet. "But you're missing out on free food and entertainment. Plus it's where you hear all the good gossip."

Claire laughed from her position near the fire. "I don't think William is interested in gossip."

"Everyone's interested in gossip," Sara protested. "They just pretend they're not."

"Not everyone," William said without opening his eyes.

Sara made an exaggerated sound of disbelief. "Fine, be mysterious. But you're definitely the subject of gossip even if you don't care about hearing it."

"Let me guess," Claire said with amusement. "People are speculating about his sudden improvement and the attention from all the popular women in the academy."

"Exactly!" Sara pointed at Claire triumphantly. "See? Even she knows the gossip."

William continued his practice and ignored their conversation. His fire gate was fluctuating right at the edge of fifty percent and he was trying to maintain the precise balance needed to push it over the threshold without forcing it.

Sara continued her craft work while occasionally making observations about camp life or academy politics that neither William nor Claire really engaged with. But her presence was comfortable rather than intrusive, and she seemed content to fill silence with casual chatter that didn't require response.

"I'm going to the stream to wash some clothes," Sara eventually announced while gathering her things. "Does anyone want to come?"

"I'll join you," Claire said while standing. "I could use a break from sitting."

They left and William was alone at the camp for the first time since the expedition started. The solitude was peaceful and he took advantage of it to deepen his meditation and focus entirely on his essence circulation.

The fire gate responded to his concentrated effort and he felt it shift incrementally closer to the threshold. Just a bit more and he'd have access to actual fire techniques instead of just sensing the element.

He wasn't sure how long he had been practicing when he heard footsteps approaching. Opening his eyes, he found Seraphina standing there with an unreadable expression.

"Where is everyone?" she asked while looking around the empty camp.

"Marcus is still scouting with you I thought. Sara and Claire went to the stream. While Lyanna is collecting samples somewhere."

Seraphina nodded and sat down near the fire, close enough to William's position that conversation was possible but far enough to maintain clear distance.

They sat in silence for several minutes before Seraphina spoke.

"You and Lyanna seem to have made out."

William opened his eyes and chuckled while looking at her. "Made out? No, it's just some academy stuff."

"Right." Seraphina's tone was carefully neutral. "Just academic discussion."

"Is there something you want to say?" William asked directly.

Seraphina met his eyes with that intense focus she always had. "No. I was just making an observation."

More silence stretched between them. William could sense that Seraphina wanted to say something else but was holding back, and he wasn't interested in dragging it out of her.

"Your sword forms seems to have gotten sharper," he said, changing the subject. "It's probably because you were practicing more intensively since we got here."

Seraphina's expression shifted slightly toward something that might have been satisfaction. "The environment here is good for training, there's no distractions or interruptions so I just took full advantage of it."

"That's why I've been cultivating so much," William agreed. "The Vale has better essence concentration than the academy grounds."

They fell into more comfortable conversation about training and cultivation, and Seraphina gradually relaxed from whatever tension had been driving her earlier. By the time Sara and Claire returned from the stream, Seraphina was explaining advanced sword techniques and William was asking questions about application.

Lyanna returned shortly after with her samples and notes, and she settled near William's tree to organize her collection. Sara started preparing lunch while Claire claimed a sunny spot to dry her freshly washed clothes.

The camp had a surprisingly domestic atmosphere despite being in the middle of a forest with no clear idea when they would be extracted. People had fallen into comfortable routines and the group dynamic felt more like friends on a camping trip than strangers forced together by academy assignment.

"You know," Sara said while cooking, "if we have to be stuck somewhere, this isn't the worst situation. It's a good weather and we have decent food with no dangerous beasts attacking us constantly."

"Yet," Claire added with a smile. "No dangerous beasts are attacking us yet."

"Don't jinx it," Marcus said while returning from his scouting. "I would like to get through this without combat if possible."

Lunch was a relaxed affair with conversation flowing easily between various topics. Someone brought up the tournament and Marcus admitted he had been impressed by William's match against Liam.

"I fought Liam during practice sparring once," Marcus said. "And I only lasted about forty-five seconds before he had me completely overwhelmed. You went over six minutes and actually landed hits. That's seriously impressive."

"I just pushed my body to its limits," William said simply.

"That's the point though," Marcus continued. "Most people can't push that far even when they try. You did it in an actual high-stakes match."

The conversation moved on to other tournament matches and people's opinions about various fighters' techniques. William listened without contributing much but found the discussion more tolerable than he had expected.

The afternoon settled in with people dispersing to their usual activities. Lyanna returned to her spot near William's tree and pulled out more academic texts.

"Can I ask you something about the fire affinity awakening process?" she said after a while.

"Sure," William replied.

Lyanna explained her question about how essence pathways adapted to accommodate elemental energy flow, and they spent another hour in academic discussion that felt completely natural.

From across the camp, Seraphina watched them again while pretending to sharpen her sword. Her jaw was tight and her movements were more aggressive than necessary, but she didn't approach or interrupt William and Lyanna.

Sara noticed and leaned over to whisper to Claire. "Yeah, she's definitely jealous."

"Obviously," Claire whispered back with amusement. "Though it's interesting that William seems completely oblivious."

"Men usually are," Sara said sagely.

Claire smiled but didn't disagree.

The afternoon continued peacefully until Sara suddenly had an idea.

"We should play a game or something. We've been here a week and we haven't done anything fun as a group."

"What kind of game?" Marcus asked skeptically.

"I don't know...anything. Truth or dare? Story telling? We must have some kind of entertainment option."

"I'm not playing truth or dare," Seraphina said immediately.

"Fine, no truth or dare." Sara thought for a moment. "What about combat demonstrations? Everyone shows their best technique and we vote on who has the coolest one?"

That idea actually got people's attention. Marcus agreed it could be useful for learning, and even Lyanna seemed interested in seeing different combat applications.

"I'll go first," Sara volunteered while standing up. "Watch this."

She demonstrated her shadow manipulation technique by creating multiple shadow constructs that moved independently around the clearing. The effect was impressive and showed significantly more control than she'd displayed during their previous encounters.

Marcus went next with a fire-enhanced combat sequence that was straightforward but powerful. Seraphina demonstrated a sword technique that was so fast most people couldn't track all the movements. Lyanna showed precise elemental control by creating complex wind patterns that could be weaponized instantly.

Claire revealed she could manipulate essence in ways that created illusions, making copies of herself appear in multiple locations simultaneously.

"Your turn," Sara said to William expectantly.

William considered declining but realized that would just create more attention than participating. He stood and channeled essence through his pathways in the enhanced physical technique he had been using since the tournament.

It wasn't flashy like the others' demonstrations but the speed and power were noticeable, and he moved through a combat sequence that showed significant improvement from when the expedition had started.

"Not bad," Marcus said appreciatively. "Your speed has definitely increased."

They spent another hour with people showing variations of techniques and discussing applications. The atmosphere was relaxed and genuinely enjoyable, and William found himself not hating the group activity for once.

Evening arrived and Sara was preparing dinner while people gathered around the fire for a conversation which was comfortable and occasionally funny, with Sara telling increasingly ridiculous stories about academy mishaps that may or may not have been true.

Lyanna sat near William and occasionally leaned over to make quiet comments about Sara's stories or ask questions about essence theory. Their interaction had returned to the comfortable academic partnership from before all the complications, and neither seemed to acknowledge the previous tension.

Seraphina maintained her position slightly apart from the group but William noticed she kept glancing in their direction throughout the evening. He didn't understand why she seemed bothered but also didn't particularly care enough to address it.

Claire observed everything with her usual amusement, occasionally inserting comments that suggested she understood exactly what was happening even if nobody else did.

As night fell and people started heading to their tents, Sara plopped down next to William one more time.

"Today was fun," she said. "We should do more group activities."

"Maybe," William said noncommittally.

Sara grinned and headed to her tent, leaving William with first watch alongside Marcus.

They sat in comfortable silence while the forest settled into its nighttime sounds. The day had been unexpectedly pleasant despite still being stuck without extraction, and the group dynamic had shifted into something more genuinely friendly than forced cooperation.

Chapter 25: Chapter 25

"Ugh," William groaned while cleaning his eyes with his forearm as he slowly pushed himself up from his sleeping position and crawled out of the tent.

Today, unlike the other days, was much quieter which surprised him as he stood up and stretched his stiff muscles from sleeping on the ground for over a week now.

To his surprise he found the campsite unusually empty with only Claire sitting beside an extinguished campfire, gulping down a plate of food with surprisingly unrefined movements for someone who usually carried herself with such calculated grace.

"Where is everyone?" William questioned while sitting down beside her at the fire, still rubbing the sleep from his eyes and trying to figure out why the camp felt so abandoned.

"Oh good morning William, and how was your night?" Claire asked with a bright smile while totally ignoring his question, which made William's eye twitch slightly with veins popping on the side of his head at her deliberate deflection.

"Claire," he said with forced patience while giving her a flat look that suggested he wasn't in the mood for games this early in the morning.

She laughed at his expression and finally relented. "They all went out early this morning. Sara wanted to collect more samples from that area near the northern ridge, and Marcus went with her for security. Lyanna tagged along because apparently there are some rare plants up there, and Seraphina went because..." Claire paused with an amused smile. "Well, Seraphina went because Lyanna went."

William processed that information while wondering why nobody had bothered to wake him, though he supposed eight days of early mornings had earned him one chance to sleep in.

"Why didn't you go with them?" he asked while noticing that Claire had apparently already prepared breakfast for herself and left some warming near the coals for him.

"Not really interested in hiking through the forest at dawn to look at plants," Claire said while finishing her food and setting the plate aside. "Besides, I figured someone should stay at camp in case the extraction carriages finally show up."

That was logical enough, and William helped himself to the food she had left, finding it surprisingly well-prepared considering their limited supplies and cooking equipment.

They sat in comfortable silence for a while with only the forest sounds and the occasional crackle from the dying fire filling the space between them. It was peaceful in a way the camp hadn't been when everyone was present, and William found himself actually relaxing.

"Can I ask you something?" Claire said after several minutes, her tone more serious than her usual playful affect.

"You're going to regardless of what I say," William replied while continuing to eat.

Claire smiled slightly but it didn't reach her eyes the way her usual expressions did. "Why don't you seem bothered by being stuck here? Most people would be frustrated or worried by now, but you've just been... calm about the whole situation."

William considered the question while finishing his breakfast. "Being frustrated wouldn't change anything, and worrying about things outside my control is a waste of energy. We have food, water, shelter, and nobody's in actual danger. It actually seems like a decent situation to me."

"That's a very practical way of looking at it," Claire observed while pulling her knees up to her chest in a posture that seemed uncharacteristically vulnerable for someone usually so composed. "Most people aren't that rational about discomfort."

"Most people waste a lot of energy on things that don't matter," William said while setting his empty plate aside and leaning back against a log that had become his usual spot during meals.

Claire was quiet for a moment before speaking again, and her voice carried an edge of something that sounded almost like genuine emotion rather than her usual calculated tones.

"I grew up in a family where everything was about control and appearances," she said while staring at the extinguished fire rather than looking at William. "My father collected talented people like trophies, and my mother taught me that everyone is either an asset or a liability. Emotions were weaknesses to be exploited in others and suppressed in yourself."

William turned his attention fully to her because this was the first time Claire had shared anything personal beyond surface-level observations and calculated flirtation.

"By the time I was eight, I had learned to read people's desires and fears and use them to get what I wanted," Claire continued with a slight bitter edge to her voice. "My parents were proud of that. They said I was naturally gifted at manipulation and would do great things for the family name."

She paused and pulled her knees closer while her usual confident posture crumbled into something that looked tired and small.

"The problem is that when you spend your entire childhood learning to manipulate everyone around you, you forget how to actually connect with people," she said quietly. "Everything becomes transactional. Every interaction is about gaining advantage. And you wake up one day realizing you don't actually know how to just... be around someone without calculating angles."

William listened without interrupting because Claire seemed to need to say this more than she needed him to respond, and he had learned that sometimes people just needed to be heard rather than advised.

"Coming to the academy was supposed to be different," Claire said with a hollow laugh. "New place, new people, chance to be something other than the Hivolt family's perfect little manipulator. But old habits it seems are hard to break, and I found myself falling into the same patterns within the first week."

She finally looked at William with an expression that was startlingly genuine compared to her usual masks.

"Then you showed up and you were just... different," she said simply. "You set boundaries and meant them. You didn't play social games or try to gain advantage through connections. You just focused on your own goals and didn't care what anyone else thought about it."

William raised an eyebrow slightly. "And that interested you because...?"

"Because I don't know how to do that," Claire admitted with surprising honesty. "I've spent my entire life being what other people wanted or needed me to be, using their expectations against them. But you don't seem to care about expectations at all, and I don't know how to approach someone who doesn't have obvious buttons to push."

William considered her words while understanding why she had been so persistent despite his consistent lack of engagement with her attempts at manipulation. She'd been genuinely confused by someone who didn't operate according to the social rules she'd been raised to exploit.

"So what do you want from me?" he asked directly while meeting her eyes.

Claire was quiet for a long moment before answering with something that sounded like vulnerability rather than calculation.

"I don't know," she said honestly. "Maybe just... permission to stop pretending for a while? Everyone else at the academy either fears me or wants something from me, and I'm tired of playing those roles. But you don't seem to want anything and you're not afraid of me, so maybe I can just... exist around you without having to be the Hivolt heir?"

William understood that request more than she probably realized because he had been navigating similar issues since arriving at the academy with people projecting expectations based on his family name and reputation.

"You can exist however you want around me," he said with a casual shrug. "I'm not going to judge you for dropping the act, and I don't care about your family politics or manipulation skills. Just don't try to use them on me and we're fine."

Claire's expression shifted into something that looked like genuine relief mixed with gratitude that she didn't seem to know how to express properly.

"Thank you," she said quietly, and for once there was no calculation or hidden meaning behind the words.

They settled back into silence but it felt different now, more comfortable and less like the careful dance of two people trying to figure out each other's angles. Claire seemed to physically relax as if admitting her truth had released some tension she'd been carrying.

The morning continued with them just sitting there talking occasionally about random topics that had no strategic value or hidden meanings. Claire told him about books she'd read and places she'd traveled, and William shared observations about essence cultivation and combat techniques he'd been developing.

It was surprisingly easy to talk to her when she dropped the manipulative act and just spoke like a normal person having a conversation. William found himself actually enjoying the interaction rather than tolerating it, and Claire seemed almost surprised by how natural it felt to not be calculating every word.

By mid-morning, the rest of the group started returning to camp with their collected samples and notes about the northern ridge area. Sara was chatting excitedly about some interesting plant species while Marcus looked tired from the early morning hike.

Lyanna carried a bag full of specimens and was already making notes about their properties, and Seraphina looked alert and refreshed despite having been up since before dawn.

"You two have been having fun without us?" Sara asked with a teasing smile while noticing William and Claire sitting together in what looked like comfortable companionship rather than forced proximity.

"Just talking," Claire said with her usual composed smile back in place, though William noticed it seemed slightly more genuine than her typical expressions.

The group settled into their usual midday routine with people organizing their findings and preparing for lunch. Sara suggested they should go hunting for fresh meat since their supply of prepared food was getting lower and they had no idea when extraction would actually happen.

"We've been living off rations and preserved stuff," Sara said while examining their remaining supplies. "Some actual game meat would be nice, and the Vale probably has plenty of low-tier essence beasts we could handle."

Marcus agreed it was a practical idea and began organizing a hunting party. Seraphina was immediately interested because it meant actual combat rather than just practice forms, and even Lyanna agreed that fresh meat would be beneficial for maintaining energy during their extended stay.

"Everyone going?" Marcus asked while checking weapons and preparing supplies for a hunting expedition.

William decided it was better than sitting around camp all afternoon and agreed to join. Claire surprised everyone by also volunteering despite not being particularly combat-focused, saying she was curious to see how essence beasts differed from regular animals.

The group set out after lunch with weapons ready and Marcus leading based on tracks he'd noticed during his earlier scouting. The forest was dense in some areas and they moved carefully while watching for signs of essence beast activity.

After about forty minutes of tracking, Seraphina held up a hand to signal she'd sensed something. The group spread out and approached quietly, finding a small clearing where several deer-like creatures with faintly glowing antlers were grazing.

"Essence deer," Lyanna whispered while observing them. "They're low-tier beasts, not dangerous unless cornered. Their meat is supposed to be excellent because the essence makes it more nutritious and flavorful."

Marcus and Seraphina coordinated the attack while the others provided support. The hunt was quick and efficient with Seraphina's speed and precision bringing down two of the creatures before the rest of the herd could scatter.

They spent another hour tracking and hunting, bringing down a few more low-tier beasts that would provide adequate meat for several days. By the time they returned to camp, everyone was tired but satisfied with the successful hunt.

Sara took charge of preparing the meat with help from Claire who turned out to be surprisingly competent with a knife despite her noble background. They worked together to butcher and cook portions while preserving the rest for later.

Dinner that evening was noticeably better than previous meals, with fresh meat cooked over the fire and seasoned with herbs Sara had collected. The group ate with genuine appreciation for the change from their usual rations.

"This was a good idea," Marcus said while eating. "We should have gone hunting earlier in the week."

"Better late than never," Sara replied cheerfully. "And now we have enough meat for at least three or four more days if we ration properly."

The evening continued with people relaxing around the fire and discussing the day's activities. William found himself sitting between Claire and Sara, listening to their conversation about cooking techniques and the properties of different essence beast meats.

As night fell and people started heading to their tents, Claire hesitated near the fire while others dispersed. William noticed she seemed uncertain about something, which was unusual for someone usually so composed.

"Uhm, please can I sleep with you tonight?" Claire said suddenly while her face flushed completely red in a way William had never seen before, and she looked genuinely nervous about asking.

William raised an eyebrow while processing the request and trying to figure out if this was some kind of manipulation or if she was being genuine. After several seconds of thought and seeing her increasingly embarrassed expression, he made a decision.

"Yes, you can sleep in my TENT," he emphasized the last word while giving her a pointed look that suggested he understood exactly what she was asking and what the boundaries were.

Claire's expression shifted through several emotions before settling on relieved gratitude mixed with slight embarrassment that seemed entirely genuine rather than calculated.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "I just... sleeping alone in a tent for eight nights has been getting to me, and after this morning's conversation I thought maybe..."

She trailed off without finishing the sentence but William understood what she meant. She had dropped her walls for the first time and now felt vulnerable, wanting the comfort of presence rather than isolation.

"Just don't steal all the blankets," William said while heading toward his tent.

[Clarie Hivolt interest level has increased by 20%!]

Claire followed him with a small genuine smile that transformed her face into something softer than her usual calculating expressions, and they settled into the tent with enough space between them to be appropriate while still being close enough for the comfort of presence.

William lay on his side of the tent while Claire settled on the opposite side, and there was a moment of awkward silence before she spoke quietly.

"Thank you for listening this morning," she said into the darkness. "And for not judging me or trying to use what I told you."

"No point in using information that someone trusted me with," William replied simply. "That's not how I operate."

Claire was quiet for a moment before responding with something that sounded almost wondering. "I know. That's why I could actually tell you."

They settled into silence with only the forest sounds filtering through the tent walls and the distant murmur of the stream nearby. William found the presence surprisingly comfortable rather than intrusive, and Claire seemed to relax fully for perhaps the first time since the expedition had started.

Chapter 26: Chapter 26

The tent was quiet except for the distant sounds of the forest and the occasional crackle from the dying campfire outside. William lay on his side facing the tent wall while Claire was on the opposite side, and both of them were clearly still awake despite the late hour.

"Are you awake?" Claire asked softly as she turned toward William's back and hesitantly placed her hand on his.

"Yeah," William replied while still facing the other side, his voice low enough not to disturb the others in nearby tents.

"Can't sleep?" Claire asked, and there was something vulnerable in her tone that reminded him of their conversation from this morning.

"Yeah," William said simply.

There was a pause before Claire spoke again, and her voice carried the kind of honesty she had shown earlier when discussing her childhood.

"I keep thinking about what I told you this morning," she admitted quietly. "About my family and how I was raised. I've never told anyone those things before, and now I can't stop wondering if I made a mistake being that honest."

"Why would it be a mistake?" William asked while still facing away, giving her the option of speaking without the pressure of eye contact.

"Because knowledge is power in my family," Claire said with a bitter edge. "Admitting weakness or vulnerability to someone means giving them leverage to use against you. My mother would be horrified if she knew I had just... opened up like that without getting anything in return."

"I'm not your family," William pointed out. "And I'm not interested in collecting leverage on people."

"I know," Claire said, and he could hear the confusion in her voice. "That's what makes it so strange. You could use what I told you to manipulate me or gain advantage, but you just... won't. I don't understand people like you."

William finally turned over to face her, and in the dim light filtering through the tent fabric he could see her expression was troubled.

"People like me?" he asked.

"People who don't play the games," Claire explained while meeting his eyes. "Who just exist without constantly calculating angles or planning three moves ahead. It's like you're operating in a completely different world than the one I was taught to navigate."

"Maybe your family's world is just unnecessarily complicated," William said. "Not everything has to be a strategic competition."

Claire was quiet for a moment before speaking again, and her voice had dropped even quieter.

"Do you know what the worst part is?" she asked while her hand was still resting on his. "I'm so good at reading people and predicting their actions, but I can't figure out what you actually think of me. Everyone else is easy—they want something, they fear something, they desire something. But you just... I don't know what you want."

"Maybe I don't want anything from you," William said honestly. "Maybe I'm just fine with you being around without needing it to mean something strategic."

"That doesn't make sense," Claire said with frustration creeping into her voice. "Everyone wants something. That's how the world works."

"Or that's just what your family taught you to believe," William countered. "People can exist together without transactional relationships."

Claire stared at him for a long moment, and he could see her trying to process that concept against everything she had been raised to believe. Her eyes were starting to glisten with moisture that suggested tears were close to the surface.

"I don't know how to do that," she admitted with her voice breaking slightly. "I don't know how to just... be around someone without acting. Every interaction I've ever had was about gaining advantage or protecting myself, and I'm so tired of it but I don't know how to stop."

A tear rolled down her cheek and she looked almost surprised by it, as if genuine emotion was foreign enough to be startling.

"What if I can't change?" she whispered while more tears started falling. "What if I'm so broken by how I was raised that I'll never be able to have actual connections with people?"

"You're not broken," William said while watching her struggle with emotions she had clearly been suppressing for years, waiting for the right moment to dump it to someone. "You're just trying to unlearn toxic patterns, and that takes time."

Claire's composure finally crumbled completely and she started crying in earnest, the kind of deep sobs that showed years of suppressed emotion finally finding release. She moved closer to William and buried her face against his chest while her shoulders shook with the force of her crying.

William was confused by the sudden emotional breakdown because he had never been particularly good at handling other people's feelings, but he could tell Claire needed comfort rather than indifference right now. He hesitantly brought his hand up and started gently patting her head in what he hoped was a soothing gesture.

"It's okay," he said awkwardly while continuing the head patting that seemed to help based on how Claire was gradually relaxing against him. "Just let it out."

Claire cried for several minutes while William maintained the gentle head patting and tried not to feel too uncomfortable with the emotional intimacy of the situation. Eventually her sobs quieted into occasional hiccups and sniffles, and her breathing started evening out into something calmer.

"Sorry," she mumbled against his chest without moving. "I don't usually... I mean, I never..."

"It's fine," William interrupted before she could work herself into another emotional spiral. "Everyone needs to break down occasionally."

Claire made a sound that might have been agreement or just exhaustion, and William felt her body gradually go limp as sleep finally claimed her. Her breathing deepened and steadied into the rhythm of genuine rest, and he found himself stuck in position with her still pressed against his chest.

He considered trying to move her back to her side of the tent but decided that would probably wake her up, and she clearly needed the sleep more than he needed the space. Instead he settled into a more comfortable position and let himself drift off as well while his hand remained resting on her head.

---

Morning arrived with sunlight filtering through the tent and the sounds of camp activity already underway outside. William woke up to find Claire still pressed against him but now awake and looking mortified.

"I am so sorry," she said while quickly pulling back to her side of the tent. "I didn't mean to—I mean, last night was—"

"It's fine," William interrupted while sitting up and stretching. "You needed to cry and I happened to be there. No big deal."

Claire looked at him with an expression that meant she thought it was a much bigger deal than he was treating it, but she seemed grateful that he wasn't making it awkward.

They emerged from the tent to find Sara making breakfast and giving them both a knowing look that William chose to ignore completely.

"Sleep well?" Sara asked with barely contained amusement.

"I slept just fine," William said flatly while heading to the stream to wash his face.

The morning routine continued with people eating breakfast and discussing plans for the day. Lyanna suggested they should visit the cave system with the essence spring again since they had another day to kill before potential extraction.

"The concentration there was really beneficial for cultivation," she said while referencing her notes. "And we have time to spend a few hours there without rushing."

The group agreed it was a good way to spend the day, and after breakfast they gathered supplies for the hike to the cave. The walk took about thirty minutes through now-familiar forest paths, and they reached the entrance with plenty of daylight remaining.

The cave interior was just as beautiful as before with crystalline formations glowing softly and creating enough ambient light to navigate without additional sources. They made their way through the passages toward the chamber with the essence spring, following the path they'd mapped on their previous visit.

William was walking near the middle of the group when Seraphina suddenly stopped and held up her hand in a signal for everyone to freeze.

"Something's ahead," she said quietly while her hand moved to her sword. "It has a large essence signature. Much stronger than the beasts we hunted yesterday."

The group moved forward cautiously and reached the chamber with the essence spring to find it was no longer empty. A massive creature that looked like a bear made partially of living crystal was drinking from the pool, and its essence signature was so strong that even William could feel the pressure from across the chamber.

"Sovereign-class beast," Lyanna whispered with barely contained fear. "That's way beyond our level. We need to leave now."

The creature's head snapped toward them, apparently having sensed their presence despite their attempts at stealth. Its eyes glowed with concentrated essence and it let out a roar that echoed through the cave system with enough force to make the crystal formations vibrate.

"Run," Marcus said urgently, and the group immediately turned to retreat back through the passages.

The beast charged after them with surprising speed for something so large, and the sound of its crystalline claws scraping against stone echoed behind them as they ran.

HELP! I'M JUST AN EXTRA YET THE HEROINES AND VILLAINESSES WANT ME!C27

Chapter 27: Chapter 27

The group ran through the cave passages with the Sovereign-class beast's roars echoing behind them, and William could hear the sound of crystal formations shattering as the creature pursued them with single-minded determination.

"Split up at the next junction!" Marcus shouted while running. "It can't follow all of us at once!"

They reached a branching passage and the group divided with Marcus, Sara, and Lyanna taking the left path while William, Seraphina, and Claire went right. The beast hesitated for only a moment before choosing to follow William's group, apparently drawn by something in their essence signatures.

"Why is it following us?" Claire gasped while running as fast as she could manage.

"It doesn't matter, just keep moving!" Seraphina called back while leading them through passages that were getting narrower.

William could feel the beast gaining on them despite their speed, and he realized they needed to either find an escape route or figure out a way to slow it down. The passage ahead opened into a smaller chamber with multiple exits, and Seraphina immediately assessed their options.

"There," she pointed to a narrow crevice that was barely wide enough for a person. "The beast won't fit through that."

They squeezed through the opening one by one with the creature arriving just as Claire, the last one through, made it to the other side. The beast roared in frustration and slammed against the rock, causing the entire chamber to shake but not breaking through.

"Keep moving," Seraphina ordered. "That won't hold it forever."

They continued through the tight passage which eventually opened back into the main cave system closer to the entrance. Behind them they could hear the beast still trying to break through the barrier, and the sound of cracking stone suggested it might succeed eventually.

The group emerged from the cave entrance into daylight and found Marcus, Sara, and Lyanna already there looking relieved to see them alive.

"Everyone okay?" Marcus asked while checking them over for injuries.

"Fine, just terrified," Claire admitted while trying to catch her breath. "That thing was way stronger than anything we should have encountered here."

"We need to report this to the faculty supervisors immediately," Lyanna said with urgency. "A Sovereign-class beast in a first-year training area is extremely dangerous."

They made their way back to camp quickly and Marcus found their assigned faculty supervisor to report the encounter. The supervisor's expression turned serious as they listened to the description.

"A crystal bear of that size shouldn't be in this sector," the supervisor said while making notes. "I'll report this to the expedition coordinators. You all stay at your camp and avoid that cave system until we've dealt with the threat."

The group returned to camp feeling shaken from the close call, and people scattered to process the encounter in their own ways. Seraphina immediately went to her training spot and began running through sword forms with aggressive intensity. Lyanna pulled out her books but seemed too distracted to actually read them. Sara started organizing camp supplies just to have something to do with her hands.

William found his usual tree and sat down, but his heart was still racing from the chase and he couldn't settle into cultivation practice. Claire sat down near him without asking, apparently seeking the same comfort of presence she haf needed last night.

"That was too close," she said quietly. "If Seraphina hadn't found that narrow passage..."

"But she did," William pointed out. "And we're fine."

"This time," Claire countered. "What if the extraction keeps getting delayed and we run into something else we can't handle?"

William didn't have a good answer for that because she was right that their luck might not hold indefinitely if they kept encountering threats beyond their level.

The afternoon passed tensely with everyone on edge from the morning's events. Sara tried to maintain normalcy by preparing lunch, but the usual relaxed atmosphere was gone and replaced with an awareness that the Vale wasn't as safe as they had been treating it.

Marcus organized a group discussion about safety protocols and established new rules about where people could go alone versus requiring partners. Nobody objected because the crystal bear encounter had reminded everyone that they were still students in a potentially dangerous environment.

Evening quickly came and the group gathered around the fire for dinner, but conversation was subdued compared to previous nights. People ate quickly and several glanced toward the forest shadows as if expecting threats to emerge from the darkness.

"We should set double watches tonight," Marcus suggested. "Just in case."

Everyone agreed, and the watch schedule was reorganized to have four people awake at all times instead of the usual two. William took first watch with Seraphina, Marcus, and Sara, and they positioned themselves at different points around the camp perimeter.

The forest at night felt more threatening than it had on previous evenings, and every sound made William tense with awareness that danger could approach from any direction. Seraphina paced her section with her hand never leaving her sword hilt, and even Sara's usual cheerfulness was muted into quiet vigilance.

Their watch passed without incident and they woke Lyanna, Claire, and two others for the second shift. William returned to his tent and found Claire already inside waiting, apparently having decided that their arrangement from last night would continue without needing to explicitly ask again.

"Do you think the extraction will actually happen tomorrow?" she asked once they'd settled into their sleeping positions.

"Maybe," William said while staring at the tent ceiling. "We're past day nine now. Either they'll come get us or we'll have to seriously consider walking back to the academy on our own."

"That would be a long walk," Claire observed. "And dangerous with beasts like that crystal bear around."

They lay in silence for a while before Claire spoke again with the same vulnerability she'd shown last night.

"Thank you for last night," she said quietly. "For letting me cry and not making it weird afterward. I needed that more than I realized."

"It's fine," William replied simply. "People need to break sometimes."

"I've never had someone I could break around before," Claire admitted. "My family doesn't allow weakness, and everyone at the academy sees me as either a threat or an opportunity. But you just... let me be human for a while."

William turned slightly toward her. "You can be human around me whenever you need to. I'm not going to judge you for having emotions."

Claire's expression in the dim light looked grateful and slightly overwhelmed, as if the concept of unconditional acceptance was foreign enough to be almost frightening.

"Can I ask you something?" she said after a pause.

"Sure."

"Why are you okay with me being close like this?" Claire gestured to their shared tent space. "Most people would either try to take advantage of the situation or assume I had ulterior motives. But you just... accept it at face value."

William considered the question. "Because I don't see the point in complicating things that are simple. You wanted company instead of sleeping alone, I don't mind sharing space, so we share space. It doesn't need to mean anything beyond that unless we decide it does."

[Claire interest in you has surpassed 40%]

They settled into comfortable silence and Claire gradually relaxed into sleep while William lay awake.

He found it incredibly hard to sleep so he had no choice but to go out, light up the camp fire and sit close to it.

Listening to the sound of burning wood made William relax a little and he even found it a bit amusing due to how soothing it was.

"You couldn't sleep huh?"

A voice suddenly sounded behind him, when he turned around he saw Seraphina walking towards him with her sword at her hip.

"Yeah I couldn't" William replied as he turned his gaze back at the fire.

"Same" Seraphina said as she settled down a few inches from him while placing her sword on the wood beside her.

They sat down in silence for a while until Seraphina couldn't take it.

"I see you've been ignoring me for a while now" Seraphina said with a small smile on her face.

"I thought likewise," William said simply making Seraphina clench her first.

"I feel like punching the hell out of you right now"

"Then go ahead"

"You'd die if I did"

"Oh that true" William said slowly backing away making Sera chuckle.

It had been a long time since she and William had spoken and even if she didn't want to admit it, it had taken a toll on her the entire time and she didn't know why.

She just always felt a natural urge to be with William which she had no explanation for but he surley did.

[Seraphina's interest has increased by 6%]

When William saw this message he simply shook his head, he had completely forgotten about this system for sometime that he was beginning to think the system was non functioning at all.

[Catastrophic Allure Activated]

Huh?

Suddenly Seraphina out of nowhere jumped upon him with a predatory gaze. "You are mine!" Seraphina said hungrily as she immediately pressed her face against his locking their faces into a kiss leaving William dumbfounded.

Huh?

Huhhhhhhhhhh?!!!

What the fuck is this?

William tried to speak but she didn't allow him, as her tounge hungrily ravaged inside his mouth as though she was searching for something.

'Fuck this damned system!'
