Chapter 112 - Speculation

The Quinjet circled in the air and slowly landed on the ground. Natasha Romanoff brought Peter Parker and Bob Eagle to the destroyed Launch Silo.

A group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had already sealed off the scene, vigilantly monitoring the surroundings. The Lizardmen had only taken one Nuclear Warhead from the Launch Silo, while the remaining nine were still in the silo because the entrance had been severely damaged and they couldn't be removed.

They suspected the Lizardmen might attack again to seize the remaining nuclear weapons, so security was very tight.

Natasha Romanoff first produced her identity card, then verified her iris and fingerprints before passing the security check.

"Have the technical team found anything?"

She looked at the agents who were using scanners to scan every inch of the area.

"We detected explosive residue and found traces of Octokini."

Octokini is the best performing explosive currently used in the military. Because of its high cost, it is usually used in high-power missile warheads. Ordinary people could not even access this advanced explosive.

"The attacker first concentrated three spherical bombs above the Launch Silo's cover, creating a weak point with an explosion. Then, they directly punched through the Launch Silo cover with their arm, and finally controlled the spherical bombs to fly inside the Launch Silo and detonate, blowing the entire Launch Silo sky high."

Agent Sitwell said, having discovered these clues on the Launch Silo cover, which was blown more than twenty meters away.

When he mentioned the Launch Silo cover being pierced by the attacker's arm, his eyes twitched noticeably. The world was becoming increasingly unfamiliar. Even Captain America, a hero from World War II, didn't possess such terrifying destructive power.

"We are tracing the source of the Octokini, and we believe we'll have results soon."

Although the formula is the same, the Octokini produced by different factories, production lines, and batches will have extremely subtle differences. Only by identifying the batch of explosives and tracing the explosives' whereabouts can they find the attacker's trail.

The Octokini isn't a low-quality explosive that can be produced by a small workshop. The output is very small, making it easy to track.

Natasha observed the Launch Silo cover, which remained largely intact. This 105-ton reinforced concrete Launch Silo cover was still mostly whole, only with a large chunk missing in the middle due to the bomb's damage.

"Can Captain Johnson do similar damage?"

Natasha asked, still clinging to the idea that Captain Johnson was behind the attack. As a former Navy SEAL, Captain Johnson possessed excellent demolition skills, making it not too difficult for him to acquire an Octokini.

"Impossible... Winston couldn't have done it. If he could really punch through this reinforced concrete, he would have punched me to death in New York City a long time ago."

Although Captain Johnson was stronger than Bob Eagle, the gap between them hadn't reached a point of fundamental change.

Even with the Launch Silo's sturdy cover already blasted with a deep pit, it was still impossible for Bob Eagle to punch through it.

"Looks like new Lizardmen have appeared."

Natasha's expression darkened. These new humans created by the Lizard Serum were even more troublesome than mutants. At least a significant portion of mutants still had some sense of recognition for humanity. Only a tiny minority, like Bob Eagle, had eliminated their evil personalities. The vast majority of Lizardmen held only pure malice towards humans.

The Lizard Serum's manufacturing technology had to be destroyed to prevent the emergence of more Lizardmen.

She informed headquarters of the situation. She had headquarters dispatch agents to monitor all members involved in cross-species gene transplantation projects and issue a wanted notice, putting Dr. Ratha on a nationwide wanted list.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s primary concern remained Professor Connors, the inventor of the Lizard Serum. He had mysteriously disappeared after exposing the Osborn Group's negative experiments on veterans using the serum on television.

"I want to ask, what exactly is the Lizardmen's motive for taking this Nuclear Warhead?"

Peter Parker asked, raising his hand.

"Who knows what they want to do. Maybe they want to threaten the U.S. government into helping them establish a Lizardmen nation. The possibility of the Nuclear Warhead detonating is only 0.1%, because several high-energy explosives inside the warhead must detonate simultaneously to reach a critical state and cause a chain reaction. Without going through the launch sequence, it's impossible to trigger the detonator,"

Agent Sitwell said.

"Even if the probability is only 0.00001%, we must make it zero, and the probability isn't that low. If they have weapons-grade uranium, with the Osborn Group's technology, it's not impossible to create a nuclear bomb,"

Natasha said sternly, dissatisfied with Agent Sitwell's attitude.

"If they're trying to establish a Lizardmen nation, why haven't they threatened the U.S. government or the United Nations?" Peter Parker asked. "They've already taken the Nuclear Warhead; this is the best opportunity to state their demands."

"How did you think of all this?"

Agent Sitwell looked at Peter Parker in surprise.

"Isn't that how it's all portrayed in True Lies? That's why I felt it was strange; why haven't the Lizardmen shown themselves after stealing the Nuclear Warhead?"

Peter Parker scratched his head, a little embarrassed.

"Although it's a movie plot, this is the first time we've encountered a Nuclear Warhead being hijacked. It is indeed very strange that the Lizardmen haven't shown up yet. It's too difficult for them to detonate a Nuclear Warhead; it would be better for them to use it to threaten the U.S. government."

They could simply threaten to use the radiation source to contaminate the Great Lakes and force the president to agree to any demands.

After all, it's an election year.

"So what do the Lizardmen actually want? A 475,000-ton Nuclear Warhead, though powerful, is simply incapable of destroying all of humanity. It would only enrage humanity, leading to their complete extinction, with no possibility of compromise."

Humans are one of the most resilient species on Earth. Hiroshima and Nagasaki didn't become wastelands because of those two nuclear bombs. Now, Hiroshima has a population of 1.2 million and is even a popular tourist destination for visitors from the East.

Judging by the Lizardmen's current behavior, after fully integrating the lizard genes, they possess intelligence comparable to humans. Although they are filled with hatred for humans, they aren't foolish enough to try and destroy themselves along with humanity.

"Perhaps he just wants the radioactive material inside the Nuclear Warhead," Natasha said.
