Chapter 179 - Attack from the Deep

A Canglong-class submarine hovered about 40 meters underwater, monitoring all activity in the surrounding waters. The captain sat at the command seat, looking extremely grim. They had been forced into this dangerous mission by higher-ups.

The two Godzillas were not mindless monsters. One had led the near-bankrupt Osborn Group back to its peak, and the other was an experienced SEAL team commander. After their first tracking by underwater sonar, they deliberately avoided areas with sensors and destroyed many key sonar points.

Now, the only way to track Godzilla underwater was with submarines.

Even though there were many anti-submarine patrol planes above, everyone aboard the submarine felt no sense of security.

The Canglong-class submarine, equipped with a Swedish-licensed Stirling AIP closed-loop propulsion system, could stay submerged for two to three weeks, but its submerged speed was only 4 knots.

Even at maximum submerged speed, it could only reach about 20 knots, and in that case, it would need to surface within an hour to replenish oxygen and expel waste gas.

According to S.H.I.E.L.D. records, the two Godzillas could swim at an incredible 268 knots. In their presence, this expensive submarine was essentially a sitting duck.

"The Americans are ruthless. Their Seawolf-class subs can cruise at 35 knots underwater for long periods, yet they make us do this dangerous mission."

"Anyway, they can't even determine our location. We'll just hover here, and when the mission time's up, return. If asked, we'll just say we didn't detect anything underwater."

The captain said this as he lounged in the command seat, and the other crew members laughed.

This mission involved six submarines, scattered around Japanese waters, conducting a net-style search for Godzilla.

Thanks to the submarine's stealth, tens of meters of water blocked radio waves. Communication with the outside world was only possible via VLF (very low frequency), making detection nearly impossible. As long as everyone inside the sub stuck to the story, the command would have no way of knowing they had been "fishing" underwater all week.

Suddenly, the submarine's low-frequency passive sonar detected a noisy disturbance. The experienced sonar operator initially thought it was a pod of whales.

On the electronic chart, symbols representing whales moved rapidly from east to west.

"Whales? Didn't expect them here in the Sea of Japan. I wonder if there are any whalers nearby—maybe we'll get fresh whale meat when we return to shore," the captain joked, sipping his coffee and thinking about where to dine.

But the sonar operator quickly signaled everyone in the command room to be silent. In the dark depths, the sonar operator's ears were everyone's eyes.

The command room fell silent.

"It's the sound of air bubbles bursting and fast-moving water, like a mine, but much faster and much larger. It's approaching at high speed!"

Everyone's hearts sank. They realized the worst-case scenario: the whales were likely driven into this area by the Godzillas.

"Maximum speed! Adjust heading to 145 degrees, blow ballast, surface immediately!"

The captain acted decisively. In the deep sea, fighting Godzilla was hopeless; surfacing gave them at least a chance to survive by relying on the air force.

Everyone grabbed the handles and braced as the submarine accelerated. The pressure shift caused the hull to creak and hum.

The sonar had already measured the distance and bearing of the Godzillas—they were over 300 chains (~3.6 km) away.

This would normally be far enough, but Godzilla's speed meant it could cross the distance quickly.

"Damn it! S.H.I.E.L.D. said that after Godzilla absorbs enough radiation, it will remain calm underwater. What's happening now?"

The captain panicked slightly. The crew were sweating and tense.

"The sound stopped… the targets have stopped moving!"

The sonar operator's voice trembled. For such creatures, stopping wasn't a good sign.

"We've been spotted…"

Desperate voices echoed in the command room.

"Don't panic! If we hadn't surfaced, even at our speed, we'd have just brushed past them. Godzilla isn't blind underwater. Keep surfacing—once we reach the surface, we'll be safe!"

The captain's hoarse voice reassured the crew.

"The targets are moving again, heading straight for us at high speed!"

Godzilla's spiky scales cut through the water, emitting a piercing screech, rapidly approaching.

The captain gripped his seat tightly. With only about twenty meters to the surface, if they survived, he would be hailed as a hero.

"Boom!"

The submarine's bow broke through the surface, displacing massive waves.

A P-3C anti-submarine patrol plane recognized the surfaced vessel as a Canglong-class submarine.

"Should be the Ruilong. What's that soft guy Kato doing? This mission is being watched by the Americans; if he messes up, his father-in-law won't save him," the pilot remarked.

"Boom!"

Suddenly, Godzilla's massive head appeared above the submarine. Its sharp teeth tore through the hull, shaking it violently.
