Tony Stark had reconstructed Godzilla's body structure using the skeleton discovered in the Philippines, combined with existing video footage of Godzilla. He hoped to find the creature's weak points. But how deep Godzilla could actually dive was unknown; without physical studies, relying solely on supercomputer simulations would have a huge margin of error.
"Wait—"
Tony suddenly remembered something.
"JARVIS, check the location of Universal West Mining's iron deposits in the Philippines."
JARVIS, with its super-fast data retrieval, almost instantly projected the mine's location onto Tony's helmet display.
Tony's voice grew serious for a moment.
"Bad news: that iron mine, at the time of Godzilla's death, was over 12,000 meters below sea level. It only gradually rose above sea level due to tectonic activity about 30 million years ago."
Nick Fury's breath caught. Godzilla's body was amphibious and reptilian, so S.H.I.E.L.D. had always assumed it could dive only as deep as a sperm whale—roughly 2,000 meters. That was already beyond the maximum depth a submarine could reach, but sonar could still track its movements.
But if Godzilla could dive to 12,000 meters, another Godzilla could be lurking on the ocean floor, ready to strike at any moment.
"Could it have died of old age or been hunted, and then sunk to the bottom like a whale fall?"
Phil Coulson hesitated, proposing a possibility.
"No. Godzilla was hunted by a predator. I studied paleontology for three days and found three fatal wounds on the fossil. The predator even laid eggs inside Godzilla's body. They fought on the ocean floor at 12,000 meters. This shows that 12,000 meters is far from their limit."
Tony Stark said this with unwavering certainty.
The main targets Steve Rogers was supposed to attack were precisely those three fatal points on the fossil.
"Activate long-wave radio. Order Titan to surface immediately!"
Nick Fury issued the order instantly. Underwater, Titan would have no chance against two Godzillas. The local hydrology was complex, and sonar's effective range was greatly reduced.
Meanwhile, underwater, Steve drove the Dragon Slayer spear into Winston's right chest—the fatal point. Without the impact from a high-speed charge, piercing Godzilla's hide was extremely difficult.
The spear barely penetrated the skin, releasing a high-voltage current that singed Titan.
Winston didn't give up. He partially regained mobility, thrashing violently to try and break the spear.
Steve fired the plasma pulse cannon repeatedly at Winston's head. Winston's resistance weakened. Now, Steve had the absolute advantage.
"Received long-wave signal from Hawaii, Command 7: Surface immediately!"
Veronica's interface suddenly displayed an alert.
"What? I was so close! I could have killed Winston!"
Steve hesitated, then decided to surface. Something had happened on the surface. He pulled the spear out with Titan's strength.
The plasma thrusters blazed brightly, propelling Titan toward the surface.
Suddenly, Winston, convulsing from the electric shocks, opened his eyes and bit Titan's left leg. His sharp teeth sank into Titan's armor. The massive weight of Winston's body made Titan stagger, losing balance.
"Damn it!"
Steve stabbed the spear into Winston's head. Arcs of electricity leaped so close that some adaptive armor modules crystallized to withstand the energy.
"Warning! Warning! Large target approaching from below at high speed!"
Veronica's high-frequency alarms went off. The sonar on Titan detected a fast-moving object. It had been lurking under the thermocline layer at over 2,000 meters depth.
The thermocline—a layer where warm surface water meets cold deep water—causes rapid temperature and density changes. Sound waves bend when passing through it, like light refraction.
In this permanent thermocline, sonar detection is drastically reduced. Submarines' combat range is far exceeded, so the Navy only marks it roughly on charts.
Norman Osborn, as head of a military-industrial corporation, knew submarines intimately. He hid in the cold water, using the thermocline to avoid radar and observe the battle above.
Soon, Titan's low-light cameras detected Norman Osborn approaching. Steve held his breath.
Winston's size was already huge, but Norman was even larger, with dark aggressive stripes and a muscular body. His jaws radiated terrifying power.
Steve took a deep breath and fired the plasma pulse cannon at Norman's ascending form.
"Vwoom!"
Blue plasma pulses pierced the water and struck Norman's head, shoulders, and dorsal fins. The sparks merely danced on the surface of his hide, causing no real damage.
"How is this possible…"
Steve muttered almost in despair.
"Recommend activating emergency escape system! Recommend activating emergency escape system!"
Veronica advised after analyzing the situation, opening the emergency escape button cover.
"No… there's still a chance… I will never give up on you… Veronica!"
