Chapter 3 - Carla's Diner

Paige POV:

*Three days later*

I was sitting in the rocking chair on the porch waiting for Trevor to come pick me up for my shift at Carla's. I was wearing my usual Carla's pink Tee shirt with my favorite jeans and my non slip sketchers. He pulls up in his black 1994 Z71 blasting 'Lips of an Angel' that's his and her song.

I just pretend it doesn't bother me and climb in. The diner is only fifteen minutes from the house so I won't have to deal with it for long. "How was your night my love? Is my house clean?" He asks turning the music down. I plaster my fake smile on and turn to him. "Yes sir. It's completely spotless." "Good. I won't be picking you up so you will have to walk home. I have a job to go do in Nashville. I'll be gone for a few days and I expect to see the money you make on the counter in the box." He says harshly.

God his mood swings are giving me whiplash. Normally I can get past it but this time it just gets to me. Why doesn't he just leave me for her? Hell I've only ever just wanted him to be happy. I cut off my entire family, all my friends, moved a state away, and married him just to make him happy. What more does he want from me? I'm just not good enough. Can't he see that? Obviously he can because he goes and sees her all the time now.

He stopped the truck and grabbed my face to make me look at him. "I said money in the box when I get home." He spat through gritted teeth and squeezed my face hard digging his fingertips in. "Y..y..yes s.. sir." I stuttered out. "Good. Now get out of my truck." He said pushing my face away. I scrambled out of the truck and ran inside.

The comforting smell of pancakes and hamburgers filled my nose as I walked in. I inhaled deeply then continued to the back. "Morning Paige! Mr.Fitz wants his usual and only you to wait on him." Sally called from the grill. "Morning Sally. I'll take care of it." I reply tying my pink apron and grabbing my ticket book. I step out the swinging double doors and head to the counter where Mr.Fitz is waiting. "Morning Mr.Fritz. More coffee?" I ask grabbing the pot.

"Nice to see you without bruises this morning Paige." He says lowly as I pour him another cup. I look around quickly to make sure no one heard him. "Shh... Mr.Fritz I don't want the whole town to know.." I hiss quietly. "Girl everyone knows. We also know he been down there with Lory Ann at the 'Buckin Mule'. Now why the hell doesn't he file for divorce?" He says back but not as quiet as I'd like and a few guys in construction wear are only sitting a few feet away. If they heard him they didn't let on. "I'm going to get your breakfast and then I'm going to tend other customers." I say back politely.

I know he means well. Mr.Fritz is an elderly man with grey hair, bright hazel eyes, and pale skin. He always reminds me of colonel sanders. I snicker at the thought and grab his plate from the pickup window. I turn around and grab his glass of OJ as well and take it all to him. "There ya are. If you need anything else you just let me know." I say turning to serve other customers.

About thirty minutes later the diner is full and my friend Rosalie comes barreling in for her shift. "Perfect timing as always Rose!" I shout at her over the humm of the crowd. "You know me. Right on time and not a minute more!" She shouts back ducking into the swinging doors to put her stuff away. I head over to check on the four construction guys again. They should all be models though if you ask me each of them looking like they stepped straight out of a calender.

Two of them look identical so obviously twins. They have Brown hair, brown eyes, and Carmel skin. Their faces look like they were carved from marble. The other two are just as handsome though. One having blond hair like mine, and deep tan skin. But he has blue eyes instead of gold like me. Oh did I forget to mention that? Yeah I have gold eyes. Someone told me it looks like melted gold swirling in my eyes.

The last one has red hair and blue eyes with freckles and pale skin. He has a chiseled jaw but not as prominent as the others. "You fellas need anything?" I ask politely stopping in front of the red headed one. He has been super sweet to me and I feel less intimated by him. "No ma'am we are ready to settle the bill please." The blond one spoke up and I handed him his bill. I start to walk to the register but he stops me by holding up his index finger.

He takes out his wallet and then hands me the bill with two hundred dollars. "Oh that's more than enough to cover it." I say trying to hand him a hundred back. "No ma'am that's yours. See ya later." One of the twins say and they all get up and leave. I look down at their bill. The total was $49.78. What! I squeal in excitement and stuff the change in my apron. Now I'll make enough to put some in my get away stash.
