Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 – The Betrayal

Elena awoke tangled in Damian's arms, her head on his chest. For one blissful moment, she felt safe. Then reality crashed back.

She slipped out of bed quietly, intent on clearing her head, but as she passed Damian's study, she noticed a file lying open on the desk.

Curiosity turned to dread as she read its contents: documents linking Damian to the collapse of one of her father's most important cases years ago. The betrayal was like a knife to the gut.

"Enjoying your snooping?" Damian's voice was ice-cold behind her.

Elena spun around, clutching the file. "You did this," she accused, tears blurring her vision. "You destroyed my father's case. You ruined everything!"

"I had no choice," Damian said grimly. "If I hadn't, Viktor would have killed him."

"You expect me to believe that?" Elena choked out.

Damian's jaw tightened. "I did it to protect you," he said, stepping closer. "Everything I've done has been for you."

"Don't you dare twist this!" Elena shouted, shoving past him.

She grabbed her things and fled the penthouse, leaving Damian standing in the doorway, his chest hollow and his fists clenched in silent agony.
