Chapter 2 - The day time broke

[Time: 2049.11 – Original timeline | Location: Paris, Earth Prime | Status: Anomaly triggered]

They say that when your life changes forever, you can feel it.

I never believed it.

Not until that day.

It was a night like any other.

Rain, sirens, fatigue in my bones.

I was an inspector in an ordinary criminal investigation unit, on an ordinary planet, in a time that still believed it was linear.

Then there was the Mirabeau Bridge case.

A body found with no identity.

No papers. No fingerprints.

But something was wrong:

he had been killed three days later.

Yes, you read that right.

The date of death was after the date of discovery.

I dug deeper. Because that's how I am.

I scratch. Even when it's impossible to scratch.

And that's when they came looking for me.

Not the police.

Not the government.

Them.

— "Hunter Ikaris?"

— "Who's asking?"

— "You're following a thread you don't understand. Drop it... or follow it to the end."

"And if I choose the second option?"

"Then follow me."

They took me to a place that didn't exist on any map.

A grey, timeless complex, between two beats of reality.

There, I met a woman with eyes the colour of memory.

— "Welcome to CAUSA. We correct the errors of reality."

She explained to me that reality was not stable.

That every action has consequences but that sometimes, those consequences precede the action or replicate themselves endlessly or infiltrate from other dimensions.

And when that happens, someone has to intervene.

"We are those people."

She handed me a file.

Inside was evidence that the corpse on the Mirabeau Bridge had lived several lives, in several worlds.

Each time, he died in the same place.

But each time, it was... different.

"He wasn't a man. He was an anchor point."

"And you found him."

They offered me a choice.

Forget.

Or join.

"Why me?"

"Because you saw the flaw... and you didn't deny it."

I signed.

And my name became Hunter Ikaris, Fitter

I track consequences, not culprits.

I am logic in chaos.

And every case since that day has brought me closer to a truth too vas and a presence lurking beyond the fabric of the world.
