Chapter 1 - Life of a Riftborn

A fragile looking boy in his teens. 17 years old to be precise. He had dark massy blue hair and violet red eyes he was sitting in an alley facing the market. He looked like he was plotting something. An old man across the street was selling fresh bread.

People like him were hated across the land so he had to hide his face when moving around the city after all he belongs in the slums. He stood up from the alley he was sitting in and started walking around the market place hoping to steal some food to at least give the children in the orphanage.

He remembered that his mother told him to not go to the market as it is dangerous for people like him. He also remembers that the children in the slums are suffering for being different. He walked to the old man and asked for directions while sliding some bread that was on the table into his bag. After the old man gave him the directions he walked away in a hurry.

As he walked away a piece of bread fell from the bag. When the old man saw this he ran after him chasing him across the market place. He started dropping things to slow down the old man and to his luck it worked loose the old man.

" That was a close one. But I think I lost him. It was worth it though I got some bread for the kids. "

He smiled with pride when he turned to a dark alley. Walking deeper into the dark alley he came across 3 tall masculine men. He looked up at them "excuse me" he said. They must be adventurous or maybe bandits, he thought.

"Watch where you are walking, kid" one of the men said, looking at him with a nasty look. It was like they were blocking his way as he tried to pass by they would block his path.

"What's your name kid" the biggest man in the middle asked him with a serious look on his face.

"My name is Rio," he responded with confidence, showing no fear in his eyes.

The 3 men laughed out loud as if Rio had said something funny to them. But Rio did not flinch, he just looked at them and tried to walk off. They blocked his path once more.

"Where do you think you're going kid we ain't done with you yet."

One of the men punched his face forcing Rio to fall to the ground. They all laughed once more, marking him. "I thought you were a strong kid. I guess you just have an attitude bigger than you can handle kid".

Rio stood up and the hat that he used to cover his face fell off revealing his dark blue hair and red violet eyes.

"Look what we have here boys. I've never seen eyes like that before." They thought, looking at Rio's red violet eyes one of them remembered that this is a rare race amongst riftborns. They quickly grabbed Rio before he could escape, dragging him deeper into the alley way. Rio screamed for help as he was powerless against them.

"We're going to fetch a good price on this one, this one boys it seems like it's our lucky day."

Rio was dragged until he was tossed in a cage and covered it with a blanket to avoid suspicions. The cage was pulled by a horse while the man rode separate horses covering the side and the back like Merchants transporting viable goods.

However Rio did not seem distressed at all about the situation. He carefully observed the cage he was in and it seemed like someone else was in the cage with him. But it was so dark that he could not tell who it was."Hey… You ok over there. My name is Rio. What is your name?"

Rio tried to start a conversation with the person inside the cage with him. But it seems like the other person was not interested or so it seems.

"Look, I'll get you out of here, don't worry about anything." Rio continues to comfort the other person. "Really you will save me" a soft voice came from the other person. Rio smiled, showing that he meant what he said.

"My… Na… My Name is Aya and I'm a oger nice to meet you." she said shyly. Rio's smile just got wider as he pulled a pin that was in his bag and started pinning the lock. Lucky enough the lock opens but he quickly realises the guy riding at the back and stays calm waiting for an opportunity to make a run for it.

A commotion raised in front of the bandits and they stopped. Rio smiled and realized this is the opportunity he was looking for. The guy riding from behind went forward to check out why they stopped. Rio grabbed Aya's hand and opened the cage door carefully and made a run for it. "Come on, Aya , we need to run."

The bandits noticed that they were running away. They started chasing them with their horses. A man's lags can't outshine a horse sure enough the bandits were caching up to them. "Those little bastards! Chase them and cache them. We can't let this much luck slip us by!"

Rio pulled Aya turning left trying to escape. They were trying to run when in front of them stood a group of armed guards and the bandits behind them and they were standing in the middle of it all. Rio was not sure what the guards intentions were but he was sure they were not good.

Riftborns like him and Aya were not supposed to be in the city after all. This did not look good for them. Aya was so scared she held on to Rio's hand so tight. Rio looked at her and thought to save her first." Don't worry Aya I'll get you out of here in one piece I promise you." Rio said, showing a smile like everything will be fine.

"Now we have got you kid nowhere to run! "

Rio clenched his teeth so hard it was obvious he was feeling pissed off. He kept looking left and right looking for at least an opportunity for Aya to escape. That is when the knight started screaming and charging towards them.
