The gate to the next ring yawned open like the mouth of some ancient titan, its edges inscribed with flowing runes that shimmered as Kael crossed the threshold. The air beyond was colder—fresher—and a thick mist hung low across the ground, veiling everything beyond a few feet in pale gray.
Kael stepped forward. His second body mirrored the motion perfectly—but not identically. It walked a few inches behind him now, slightly to the left, like a silent companion rather than a puppet.
And it was quiet.
Too quiet.
Not just the silence of a breathless place, but the kind that seemed to listen back.
"State your designation."
The voice came not from a person, but from the very walls.
Kael paused. "Kael…"
But the voice cut in again.
"Error. Incomplete response. Identify both vessels."
His heart skipped. He turned to his second self, who simply watched with unreadable eyes—eyes that looked like his own but didn't blink.
"Kael. Prime," he said. "And… Kael. Echo."
The mist stirred. The floor beneath him lit up with an intricate circular glyph, then divided into three concentric rings.
[Labyrinth Recognition Sequence: Initiated]
Vessel Integrity: Confirmed
Tier: One (Dual Anchored)
Mind-Soul Synchrony: Anomalous
Kael frowned. "Anomalous?"
"Echo exhibits accelerated ego formation. Independent thought detected. 17% divergence."
He stepped back, eyes widening. His Echo tilted its head.
17%? That meant it was already developing beyond him. Diverging. Becoming a person.
"Is this… supposed to happen?" he muttered.
"Not this early," a new voice answered.
Kael spun around.
A figure stood just outside the glyph's boundary. Dressed in flowing black garments woven from mist itself, his face was obscured by a silver mask etched with a single vertical slit down the center.
"Who are you?"
The masked figure stepped closer, boots never quite touching the ground.
"I am a Watcher. You are the first Echoborn in over 30,000 cycles."
Kael's breath caught in his throat.
"Echoborn?"
"Those whose secondary selves develop autonomy without command. It is… exceedingly rare."
Kael narrowed his eyes. "Is that bad?"
"It is dangerous," the Watcher said plainly. "But also… powerful."
He turned toward the Echo.
"You must decide now, Kael. Will you bind the Echo, or let it walk freely?"
Kael looked between the Watcher and the Echo.
"What happens if I let it go free?"
"You gain an ally with your face… and perhaps your future. But you also risk splitting your path. If either of you dies, only one walks on… and the tier will degrade."
"And if I bind it?"
"It becomes your shadow—subservient. Strong, yes, but never independent. You will ascend faster. But you will always be alone."
Kael looked at the Echo again.
It looked back—and nodded.
"I choose freedom," Kael said.
The Watcher paused.
"Then you walk a dangerous path. But perhaps… the only one worth walking."
The glyph flashed. The Echo stepped out of Kael's shadow fully, a shimmering tether of mana still connecting the two—tenuous, like the last breath before a leap.
[Echo Autonomy: Activated]
Divergence Stabilized at 18.3%
Sync Link: Conditional
Warning: Death of one vessel will result in Tier Fallback
The Watcher stepped back into the mist.
"The second ring awaits, Echoborn. But beware… from here on, not everything in the Labyrinth wants you to grow."
"Some want to consume you."
And just like that, he vanished.
Kael turned to the Echo—now standing side by side.
Two sets of silver-blue eyes looked into the mist.
And then they walked into the unknown.
