Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

The celebration swelled with life. Lanterns cast a warm, golden glow across the gardens, where staff, Lila, and Gideon mingled with laughter and the clink of glasses filled with sparkling cider. The air carried the sweet aroma of jasmine and freshly baked pastries, a stark contrast to the shadowed tension that had once defined these halls. Elara stood on the balcony with Cassian, their hands intertwined, the night wrapping them in a cocoon of newfound peace.

Elara's gaze drifted over the scene below, her heart swelling with a mixture of pride and disbelief. Just weeks ago, she had been a reluctant bride, thrust into a marriage orchestrated by her family's desperation and the Valmonts' enigmatic legacy. Now, she felt a sense of belonging, a connection to this place and its people that transcended the forced union. She turned to Cassian, his profile softened by the lantern light, the scars on his face no longer a mark of a monster but a testament to his resilience.

"It's beautiful," she whispered, her voice carrying the weight of their journey. "All of this—us, the estate—it feels like a dream I never dared to have."

Cassian's eyes met hers, a depth of emotion flickering within them. "It's real, Elara. You made it real. When you walked into this house, I saw a duty, a burden. But you turned it into something… alive. Something worth fighting for."

She squeezed his hand, her smile tender. "We fought together. And we'll build together. What do you envision for this place?"

He paused, his gaze sweeping the estate as if seeing it anew. "A sanctuary. Not just for us, but for anyone who needs it. No more secrets, no more curses—just a home where trust can grow. We'll open the gardens, restore the archives, and let the Valmont name stand for something good."

Elara's heart leaped at the thought, her mind already sketching plans—children's laughter echoing through the halls, scholars poring over the restored books, a community thriving where shadows once reigned. "I'd love that," she said, her voice bright with hope. "And maybe a library for the village, too. Your mother's journal could inspire it."

Cassian nodded, a rare smile curving his lips. "She'd have liked that. You remind me of her—strong, unafraid to seek the truth."

The sound of Gideon's boisterous laugh drew their attention as he twirled Lila in an impromptu dance, her shy giggles blending with the music. The sight warmed Elara's chest, a reminder of the family they were becoming. "Gideon's in his element," she noted, amusement lacing her tone.

"He is," Cassian agreed, his voice tinged with affection. "He's found his place here, and Lila's steadiness balances him. They'll help us shape this future."

As the celebration continued, Elara and Cassian descended to join the others, their presence greeted with smiles and quiet nods of respect. Gideon raised his glass, his grin wide. "To the Valmonts—new and improved! And to Elara, the bravest bride I've ever met!"

Laughter rippled through the group, and Elara felt a flush of pride as she raised her own glass. "To all of us," she countered, her voice steady. "For turning shadows into light."

The toast was met with cheers, and the night unfolded with stories and plans. Lila shared her dream of a small herb garden, her eyes bright with purpose, while Gideon proposed a festival to mark the estate's renewal. Cassian listened, contributing ideas with a quiet confidence that surprised even himself. Elara watched him, marveling at how the man who once hid behind rumors now stood as a leader, his strength drawn from their shared bond.

As the sky darkened, the crowd began to thin, the staff retiring to their quarters, leaving Elara, Cassian, Gideon, and Lila by the garden's edge. The stars above glittered like promises, and Elara felt a surge of gratitude. "This is what I want," she said softly, more to herself than the others. "A life where we choose each other, every day."

Cassian drew her close, his arm around her shoulders. "Then we'll make it so. Starting tomorrow, we begin the restoration—together."

Gideon clapped a hand on Cassian's back, his grin softening. "And I'll be there, keeping you both honest. Lila, you're in charge of the snacks."

Lila laughed, nodding. "Deal. But only if you help plant the herbs."

The banter eased the night's end, and as they parted ways, Elara and Cassian lingered in the garden. The silence between them was comfortable, filled with unspoken vows. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch lingering. "I never thought I'd find this," he admitted. "Love, in the midst of all this darkness."

Elara leaned into him, her voice a whisper. "Neither did I. But here we are."

They stood together, the estate's history a foundation for their future. The shadows that once defined the Valmont name were fading, replaced by a dawn of trust and love. As the night deepened, Elara knew this was only the beginning—a story of resilience, redemption, and the eternal light they would nurture together.
