Chapter 53 - The Cost Of Famishment

The tip of Nightfall carved a trench through the soil as she rapidly approached the Saint. Yet instead of leaning forward and trying to parry Eve's oncoming attack, Saint Roch had a different approach.

Still with his left arm behind his back, he turned and gripped his sword by the blade, using only his thumb and index finger to pinch the tip of his sword. Effectively, he pointed the pommel towards the oncoming attack from Nightfall.

This was a different type of murder-stroke stance, turning the pommel and the hilt into a mace of sorts.

He lifted the pommel high into the air, and in a single arc, he brought it crashing down when Nightfall was about to leave the soil.

But Nightfall didn't leave the soil; Eve yanked her arm as far to the right as she could. Using the momentum she had built up and the sudden change in direction, Nightfall acted as a carriage that pulled Eve's body to the right.

As her feet left the ground, she stretched her left leg and kicked with all her might. Her shin flew in a straight line towards Saint Roch's head.

Saint Roch spun to his left and somehow, with his left arm—the one that had been behind his back—he caught Eve's leg, and with her momentum, stopped her for a moment.

Rather than remaining flat in the air, she let go of Nightfall's hilt while moving her torso as close as possible towards her caught leg.

Eve lifted Vigil's knife for a moment, then brought it crashing down on Saint Roch's head.

But Saint Roch was faster than that. While Eve curled her body, he changed his grip on his sword again.

With the same thumb and index finger, he gripped the blade of his sword right in the middle.

And he thrust it upwards, right through Eve's thigh. With the blade of the knife almost reaching its mark, she ignored the pain and kept pushing.

Saint Roch simply moved his head out of the way, and the knife missed its mark.

Before Eve could change the knife's direction, Saint Roch simply pushed her away. Along with the push, he pulled his sword back from her thigh.

Once Eve landed back on her legs, she tried to take a step forward. Yet her left leg started to limp. She checked the damage. A straight hole, luckily avoiding her artery, yet one of her tendons was grazed by the blade.

"Missy, it's time to stop playing and move away."

Eve started limping towards Nightfall, and Saint Roch just let her.

"I will stop once I don't have a leg to walk towards you."

Saint Roch just coldly stared at her.

"Then so be it."

Once Eve grabbed Nightfall back, Saint Roch was already on the move. And before she could even turn towards him, her body lost the ability to stand up.

Her back fell on the soil, and she was looking at the sky.

When she tried to look at her legs, Saint Roch was on top of her, pointing his sword straight towards her neck.

"It's over."

For whatever reason, her head turned towards her left, and there it was. The leg which was pierced was laying a few meters away.

Pain and blood followed. Eve didn't know if Saint Roch or the blood loss would kill her first.

Why didn't she run? She had no excuse this time. She just took Vigil's words for granted. She would die like a dog without meeting her father.

Saint Roch pulled his sword back and started walking towards Elyon and Vigil, leaving her to bleed out.

Once Elyon saw the sight of Eve without a leg, he decided to do something. His irises turned to display the number "1."

And Eve's leg began to grow back. She stared in shock at her stump.

"Finally, it's time, crow boy," Saint Roch addressed Vigil while he just looked at him.

A step after another, Saint Roch got closer. A knife flew from behind him, cutting off his ear. The knife flew past Saint Roch and nearly missed Elyon's head by a few strands of hair.

"ELYON!"

Saint Roch clutched the place where his ear was, and a pool of blood was starting to form there. Then he turned around to see who yelled.

It was Eve, now back on her legs.

"ELYON! IF YOU HELP ME ONE MORE TIME... I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU!"

In her left arm was Nightfall, while in her right arm now lay her severed leg.

With those words, she sealed her fate if Saint Roch decided to fight her again. She couldn't accept any more help from Elyon because that would make her a hypocrite.

Maybe she was, but not at this moment.

More importantly, she couldn't use any more of Nightfall's powers since she hadn't suffered enough.

If she wanted to win, she had to do it herself.

Eve had to adapt, and so her mind wandered towards the Colosseum and her fights.

About Gladys' wrath, The Defilement's relentless tricks, Slackjaw's hunger.

But there was someone else who had no need to be on this list.

It was Galbert the clown and his pitiful life.

Eve could use that pity for a better chance at winning a fight that her opponent saw as useless.

But her mind wandered towards something else.

She had two choices. If Eve chose the second one, Saint Roch would strike her down on the spot.

Eve would be, in Saint Roch's eyes, the worst filth there is.

And so she chose the second option.

She was starting to become hungry; she felt wrathful.

Eve brought her severed leg towards her mouth.

She began to bite, to rip the flesh she called her own. Blood began to fester on her lips and cheeks.

Bite after bite, she stared the Saint in the eyes.

The Saint stared back in disgust.

Elyon looked at Eve in pure horror, his eyes wide as apples.

Once Eve finished her meal, she pointed the leg towards Saint Roch.

"How does your God feel about hunger?"
