Chapter 1 - Tracen Academy

My horse girl game addiction has grown too strong, that I've decided to write a story about it. This is all for fun, so I'm sort of just doing whatever I want while writing this. Not sure how long I plan on having this be, so I'm just going to wing it and end it when I feel like it.

However, before anybody gets excited, this WON'T be a harem story (frankly because I hate reading and writing them). So, if you somehow missed the tag and expected it, I'm sorry? I guess?

Also, some characters might feel OOC, I can't really do anything about that, as I'm sort of just basing their personalities on the traits I've been able to pick up of them. Like some characters that are out only in the Japanese Version of the game, I only have a few scenes of them to go off of, but I tried my best.

Final thing before we begin, this story takes place right after the events of Season 2 in the anime, and before Season 3. The timeline of Uma Musume is like mad confusing, and from what I've learned, you just kind of have to ignore it. So, I'm just going to do what I feel is right.

That's enough yapping. Enjoy!

Standing at the front entrance of a massive academy was a young male. He had messy, medium length grey hair with white streak highlights. The youth was wearing a blue school uniform, with two horse ears and a tail which matched the color of his hair being features that set him apart from the average male his age.

"You must be joking, right? That just isn't possible for someone like you."

"You're a defect. There's no way someone like you could ever achieve that goal."

"Come back to reality. Male Uma like us just can't become great."

These were all common phrases that Kurofune would hear when he mentioned his dream of joining Tracen Academy and becoming a great Uma.

'What would I give to see their reaction at this moment.' Kurofune thought as he admired the academy in front of him.

While he was mainly focused on admiring the sheer valor of the academy, he couldn't help but notice the stares of all of the other Uma passing by. They weren't derogatory stares…mostly, but more like stares of curiosity. Something that made sense, since Kurofune was the first male Uma to ever be admitted into Tracen Academy after all.

Kurofune, after getting one last look at the academy, decided to walk through the front entrance. A few moments later, a woman in green stopped in front of him.

"You must be the new transfer, right?" The woman said with a smile before introducing herself with a bow. "I'm Hayakawa Tazuna, a secretary here. I've been ordered by the Chairman to be your guide."

Kurofune returned her greeting with a bow, "It's nice to mean you, Tazuna-san."

"Oh my, how respectful," Tazuna commented before turning around and gesturing towards him. "Please follow me."

Tazuna began giving Kurofune a tour around the academy. She went over a few key areas, like the dormitories, the main building, training centers, and the track. The track was especially interesting to Kurofune, as he managed to catch sight of a few Uma and their training from afar.

'So cool.' Kurofune thought in awe as he watched. 'I still can't believe that I'll actually get a chance to train here.'

After that, Tazuna brought him into the main building, where she led him to his classroom.

"This is where we part ways," Tazuna said. "I hope this tour has given you a sufficient understanding of our institution."

"It did, thanks a lot," Kurofune smiled.

Tazuna bowed before taking her leave. After Tazuna turned the corner, Kurofune turned his attention to the door to his classroom. He paused for a moment, a few thoughts going through his mind.

'It looks like class is currently going on. If I go in now, everybody's attention will be drawn to me.'

But then he remembered something important.

'Wait…I could care less about that.'

Kurofune opened the door to the class. However, much to his surprise, not too many people were here. With a quick count, he only saw three others:

A rebellious looking girl with short, spikey black hair with a line of it down the middle.

A shorter, bubbly girl with long, light pink hair tied into two half-up pigtails, with the rest falling straight down her back.

A more refined girl with shoulder length brown hair and light purple eyes.

His sudden appearance drew the attention of the three.

"Oh, it looks like we have one more joining us, and an male Uma at that," The refined girl commented as she stood up from her seat and walked over to him. "You must be pretty fast if you managed to make it to a school like this."

She then pointed to herself confidently.

"I'm Tap Dance City," She introduced herself before pointing towards the other two girls behind her. "The cute gal over there is Agnes Digital, and the one with a rough exterior is Air Shakur. Don't worry, they're pretty nice if you get to know them."

"We all only just met five minutes ago," Air Shakur commented while crossing her arms.

"Maybe for now, but this is shaping up to become the start of a new fantastical story!" Agnes Digital declared. "Four Uma classmates, braving the unknown together here at this school full of Uma of all kinds and—!"

Kurofune sort of zoned out as Agnes Digital went all fangirl about the fact that she was in a school full of talented Uma, and saying how grateful she was to even be breathing the same air as them. It was a little much, but Kurofune could respect her enthusiasm about it all—even if it is overbearing.

Air Shakur was much less accepting, covering her ears in annoyance from Digital. Fortunately, Agnes Digital ended up stopping only a minute later.

"Finally…" Air Shakur muttered before sighing.

"Anyway," Tap Dance City decided to change the subject. "You should introduce yourself too. Since we'll all be classmates and rivals."

"Oh right," Kurofune remembered before introducing himself. "I'm Kurofune."

"Kurofune?" Tap Dance City looked a bit thoughtful. "That means Black Ship, right? Do you by any chance happen to have some American roots?"

"Both of my parents were born in America, but I was born here in Japan," Kurofune explained.

Tap Dance City's eyes lit up a bit upon hearing that.

"That's awesome! I was actually born in America before coming here to Japan," she revealed with a smile. "It's great that I get to meet someone with ties to America over here, even if you weren't born there."

"Likewise," Kurofune returned a smile.

'She seems nice. Though, I guess I view anybody who doesn't immediately look down on me in that light, huh?'

—Tap! Tap! Tap!

The two of them suddenly heard tapping. When they turned to the source, they noticed a rather serious looking woman with long, dark red hair tapping the door with a ruler.

"Settle down. Class is about to begin," she instructed.

[Yes, Ma'am!] The four of them shouted in unison. Tap Dance City motioned for Kurofune to follow her, leading him over to the other two and telling him to sit with them.

After that, the teacher began her lesson. Since this was their first class, she decided to begin going over the details about the Twinkle Series to the class. Though it was mostly stuff that they sort of already knew.

One thing that they didn't know were the specific requirements to actually enter the Twinkle Series. Some details were well known, like the fact that you would need to find a trainer and/or team first before you could enter, but others like the Tryout Races weren't as known.

"There are four Tryout Races. In these races, you must prove your worth if you want to get scouted," the teacher explained. "The first Tryout Race will be in a month, so I recommend studying hard and training smart if you want to succeed."

'Isn't it usually the other way around?' Kurofune thought.

—DING! DONG! BING! BONG!

The school bell suddenly rang.

"Looks like that's all the time we have today," the teacher said. "Go on now, it's lunchtime. You'll need the energy if you plan on starting your preparations for the tryouts next month."

"I'm hungry," Agnes Digital rubbed her stomach. "I hope they have something good to eat in the cafeteria."

"It's Tracen Academy, it would be surprising if a school this prestigious wouldn't provide good grub," Air Shakur states before walking off.

"Hey, wait up! We're supposed to stick together!" Agnes Digital shouted.

"When was that decided?" Air Shakur frowned.

"It's the standard for classmates to eat lunch together."

"Only in your fantasies, you damn otaku."

"I think it's a great idea," Tap Dance City pat Agnes Digital on the back. "There's no better way to bond with kindred souls than to enjoy a nice meal together."

"See, she gets it!" Agnes Digital said.

"I don't think she gets it the way you think she does…" Kurofune muttered under his breath, but he didn't feel like saying it out loud.

Lunch time flew by, with the four classmates getting to know each other a little more by breaking the ice with each other. However, when it came to people like Air Shakur, it would probably take a while before they would truly start opening up. Though it's already a good sign that Air Shakur decided to eat lunch with them (even if it was just to stop Agnes Digital from nagging her about it).

After lunch, the four decide the partways, each of them having a different plan in mind. Kurofune decided to make his way to the track, wanting to get a feel for it, especially since this would be where the Tryout Races would be taking place.

He stepped onto the track, stomping his foot into the ground to feel out the track.

'Soft, yet also firm. I bet I could run a new best on something like this.'

"I'm the one that's going to be number one!"

"No, I am!"

Kurofune suddenly heard the shouts of two Uma as they raced down the track, practically pushing each other as they did.

One of the girls had a more tomboy-esque aesthetic, with short brown hair with ends that point outward, and a white colored patch on her bangs.

The other girl had more of an honor student look, with long orange hair tied into pigtails that reached her knees, and a blue tiara on her head which had a blue gemstone in the middle.

They were both each wearing the academy's standard red and white training uniforms.

The tomboy decided to look ahead for a moment, noticing Kurofune who was standing in the middle of the track. She decided to move to the side to avoid them.

"Hey, why are you moving away?" The girl with pigtails suddenly asked before…

—BAM!

…she ran directly into Kurofune at full speed. The force of the collision sent him tumbling away a few meters.

Maybe standing in the middle of the track wasn't a good idea after all.

"Ow!" The girl rubbed her head as she struggled back to her feet.

"Haha! I can't believe you ran into them! You really are as blind as a bat, Scarlett!" The tomboy couldn't contain her laughter.

"You should've warned me that he was there, Vodka!" Scarlett shouted.

Vodka just shrugged, which pissed off Scarlett even more. However, she calmed herself, deciding it would be a better use of her time to go check on the person she ran into.

She approached them, her eyes widening when she realized she had ran into the male Uma that everybody had been murmuring about, for various reasons she honestly didn't care about.

"Hey, are you okay?" Scarlett asked.

"...I think," Kurofune replied. "Thinking back, I probably shouldn't have been standing in the middle of the track like that."

"You think?" Scarlett looked at him with a deadpanned expression before sighing. She then extended a hand to him. "Do you need a hand?"

"Yeah, thanks," Kurofune accepted the hand.

"Hey, are you guys okay!?" A man shouted as he ran over to them.

He was a tan-skinned man with fluffy brown hair. He wore a black vest over a yellow button up shirt, with similar colored pants fitted on with a white belt.

"We're okay, Trainer-san," Scarlett answered.

"Yeah," Kurofune nodded before coming to a realization.

'Wait, I recognize this guy! Isn't he Okino Trainer, the trainer of Team Spica!? That's the team with legends like Tokai Teio, Meijiro McQueen, and Special Week, right?'

He was practically in the presence of a legend.

'Wait, calm down. I should apologize for getting in the way of their training.'

"I'm so sorry for causing you guys trouble during your training," Kurofune bowed as he apologized.

"It's all good," Okino waved him off. "Nobody was hurt, so it's fine. Just be more careful next time."

"Yes sir," Kurofune replied. "I'll be going now. I don't want to keep you guys from your training any longer."

Just as Kurofune was about to leave, Scarlett called out to him.

"Hey! What's your name?" Scarlett asked.

"Huh? My name?" Kurofune was surprised.

"Yeah, I said that," Scarlett deadpanned. "You can't just walk away without introducing yourself."

"Oh…right. My name is Kurofune."

"Kurofune, huh? You owe me a favor later."

"A favor?"

"I'll cash in on it later, you can go now," Scarlett shooed him away.

Kurofune frowned, wanting to say something in response, but held his tongue and began walking away. He was the one at fault for the accident in the first place, so he shouldn't try and make things worse.

'I hope the favor isn't anything too annoying.'
