Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Haunter and Gyarados

"What do you mean by that?" Natsui was taken aback.

"I mean, if I want to evolve, I can do it anytime, anywhere!!"

As Gastly's voice fell, its body was suddenly enveloped in a burst of light. When the light faded, a Pokémon in a completely new form appeared before Natsui's eyes.

Natsui was utterly astonished.

Just like that, without any warning, it had evolved into a Haunter!?

Compared to its previous form, Haunter's round body had changed shape. Not only had the purple mist around it disappeared, but it now had a set of three spike-like protrusions on each side, and even a pair of disembodied claws had appeared out of thin air!

Natsui took out his Pokédex.

Pokédex: "Bip. Haunter, the Gas Pokémon. A Ghost and Poison type. The evolved form of Gastly. It typically lives in haunted houses and cemeteries. Haunter is stronger than Gastly and will hide in the dark to find its prey. If licked by its gaseous tongue, even one's soul will be snatched away."

"Hey, you just evolved on the spot? How did you do that?"

Natsui asked subconsciously, but on second thought, Gastly's evolution, while unexpected, was also within reason.

After all, before it met him, who knows how many years Gastly had already lived. Logically, it could have evolved into a Haunter long ago. The reason it hadn't evolved for so long was probably just because it didn't want to.

"What's there to be so surprised about?" Haunter's claws kept opening and closing as it familiarized itself with this new feature, while it said nonchalantly, "I can even evolve into my third form right now if I want to!"

"Stop, stop, stop!" Natsui quickly stopped it. "Evolving too fast isn't necessarily a good thing. You should take some time to get used to this new body."

Just then, Natsui turned his gaze back to Magikarp.

"But speaking of which, although I'm happy you evolved, our original problem still isn't solved, is it? Hey, Haunter, hurry up and try to communicate with Magikarp!"

"You want me to communicate with it!?"

Haunter looked utterly stunned at first, then flew over Magikarp and stared at it, its mouth moving slightly. After a long moment, it silently flew back.

"It's no use. It's like this guy's head is completely empty. I have no idea what it's thinking!"

Seeing Natsui frown in silence, it helped analyze the situation: "But since you said it's about to evolve and yet it's stuck at the tipping point, it must be lacking some experience or stimulation! I think if you make it battle, it should evolve pretty quickly."

Experience? Stimulation?

Natsui's eyes suddenly lit up, as if he had been inspired.

Seeing Natsui's intention, Haunter said in surprise, "No way? You really want to make it battle? But this thing only knows Splash, which does no damage at all. Even against other Pokémon, all it can do is take a beating!"

"That's not a problem for me!" Natsui clearly had an idea. He looked at his other Pokémon and ordered, "Everyone, spread out and see if there are any wild Pokémon nearby!"

The place they were at was a river bend next to the road, and not far away was a small forest.

The Pokémon searched around, and soon Kirlia found a Bug-type Pokémon sleeping on a tree trunk in the forest—a Weedle.

It let out a soft cry, and when Natsui arrived and saw the Pokémon, he nodded in satisfaction.

"A Weedle? Excellent. Everyone, keep an eye on it, don't let it get away!"

Although they were very confused, the Pokémon obediently surrounded the Weedle, cutting off all its escape routes.

Seeing that everything was ready, Natsui then said to Charmander, "Use Ember!"

Charmander tiptoed closer, took a deep breath, and shot a spark at the sleeping Weedle, instantly engulfing it.

Fire is super effective against Bug!

"Hehe, Magikarp, now it's my turn to help you!"

Seeing that the Weedle had pretty much lost its ability to battle, Natsui picked up Magikarp, walked over to the Weedle, and held Magikarp high above his head.

"Go! Magikarp! Let it witness our combo move! Silly Fish Slam!!"

As Natsui forcefully threw it downwards, in the next second, Magikarp's body, full of bones and scales, slammed heavily onto the Weedle.

With a thud, the two Pokémon collided, making a dull sound.

Seeing that the Weedle still hadn't lost consciousness, Natsui couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

"Huh? It's still not down? You're tougher than you look! But no matter, Magikarp! Let's do it again!"

With that, he once again raised Magikarp high and slammed it down hard!

This time, the Weedle couldn't take it anymore and fainted completely. And Magikarp's body, just as Natsui had hoped, was suddenly enveloped in a white light!

Excellent! The plan was a great success!

With a dragon's roar that shot up to the sky, a giant Gyarados appeared before Natsui's eyes.

Its body was about six to seven meters long, with a blue back and a light-yellow underbelly. Besides having a three-pronged horn, it also had two long whiskers. Its gaping mouth was huge, and its eyes seemed to be perpetually filled with rage.

Pokédex: "Bip. Gyarados, the Atrocious Pokémon. A Water and Flying type. Evolved from Magikarp. It has an extremely violent nature. Its scales are as hard as steel and its fangs can crush rocks. Once it goes on a rampage, it will burn anything and everything, even in a storm. It is a very brutal Pokémon."

Although this newly evolved Gyarados still looked a bit dopey, it was undeniably a qualitative leap.

But perhaps due to its nature, the first thing it did after evolving wasn't to get used to its new body, but to launch an indiscriminate attack on its surroundings!

"Hey, hey, is there something wrong with this guy's head!?" Haunter flew up into the sky to dodge Gyarados's random crashing, and said to Natsui, "Could it be that you broke it when you slammed it down like that?"

"You idiot, what are you talking about!" Natsui also quickly backed away, getting out of Gyarados's attack range. "Didn't you just hear the Pokédex? Its personality is just that brutal!"

"So what do we do now?" Haunter asked. "Do we wait for it to stop on its own?"

"Of course not! We went through all that trouble to make it evolve, how can we just let it be now!" Natsui waved his hand forward and commanded, "Alright, everyone, stop standing around and give this disobedient one a taste of your power! It's time to teach it a lesson for daring to attack its own trainer and companions, and make it understand who's the boss around here!"
