Zhang Xiaofan jumped off the amber silk ribbon just as Tian Ling'er descended boldly into the canyon below.
Now freed from his weight, the silk suddenly shot downward like a crimson shooting star, trailing a bright streak of red light as it disappeared into the shadowy ravine.
Zhang Xiaofan waited for a few breaths. Once he was sure Tian Ling'er had gone ahead, he focused his inner energy. The flying sword strapped to his back let out a crisp hum as it unsheathed itself and floated in the air, hovering steadily about three feet above the ground.
With calm determination, Zhang Xiaofan stepped onto the sword and rose into the air. Taking a deep breath, he gave a light command, and the sword shot downward, carrying him swiftly into the dark abyss below.
Though Dazhu Peak stretched for miles, Zhang Xiaofan didn't hesitate—he knew exactly where he was going. Deep within this dangerous canyon lay what he sought: the Soul-Snatching Rod, a weapon of great power… and even greater danger.
In the past, Zhang Xiaofan had stumbled upon the rod when he was only at the third level of Jade Purity. Back then, the rod had already fused with another deadly item—the Bloodthirsty Pearl, and the combined power of both was too much for him to handle. He had nearly died that day.
After escaping by sheer luck, he swore never to return.
But now, things were different.
With his cultivation having reached the eighth level of Jade Purity, and his command over multiple sacred techniques, Zhang Xiaofan felt ready to face the rod's darkness once more.
As he descended deeper into the canyon, the air grew thick with a black mist that chilled his skin and blurred his vision. A heavy, evil aura filled the space, pressing down on him like a mountain.
Sensing danger, Zhang Xiaofan quickly activated his mana, forming a jade-green protective barrier around his body. The barrier glowed softly in the darkness, repelling the mist, but the deeper he went, the stronger the pressure became.
Suddenly, his mind reeled.
A wave of dizziness struck him like a hammer. He immediately recognized it as a spiritual attack.
Without delay, he activated the powerful Buddhist technique Great Brahma Prajna. A golden light burst from his forehead, covering his body in divine brilliance. Golden and azure flames intertwined like sacred fire, burning away the darkness clouding his mind.
The evil spirits hidden in the mist shrieked and scattered, unable to withstand the holy light.
At last, Zhang Xiaofan saw it.
A massive black pool lay ahead, stretching nearly thirty meters across. Its surface was thick like ink, bubbling slowly, and from it rose waves of twisted, evil energy that distorted the air above it.
Near the edge of the pool, two figures caught his eye.
Tian Ling'er had collapsed on the ground, her face pale and drenched in sweat. Her amber silk ribbon lay beside her, fluttering weakly. The evil aura had clearly overwhelmed her body.
Not far from her, the monkey Xiao Hui was sprawled out, motionless. His third eye blinked slowly, barely able to stay open. When he spotted Zhang Xiaofan, his tired eyes seemed to plead for help.
Zhang Xiaofan's heart sank.
Without hesitation, he landed beside them. The flying sword returned to its sheath with a metallic ring as he rushed over and gently lifted Tian Ling'er into his arms.
He placed his palm against her back, channeling the Great Brahma Prajna once more. Warm golden light flowed into her body, driving out the evil energy bit by bit. Her tense expression slowly eased, and she fell into a peaceful sleep.
Zhang Xiaofan carefully carried her to a tree over a hundred meters away and laid her in a safe spot beneath its sheltering branches.
Then, he turned and went back to Xiao Hui.
He knelt and picked up the monkey, whose small body felt cold and weak. Xiao Hui opened his third eye just slightly, struggling to stay awake.
Zhang Xiaofan's hands glowed once more with gentle golden light. As the sacred energy entered the monkey's body, his breathing calmed, and some color returned to his fur.
As Zhang Xiaofan carried Xiao Hui back toward Tian Ling'er, something unexpected happened.
The monkey slowly raised his head to look at Zhang Xiaofan.
Before, Xiao Hui had always been wild and difficult to handle. Though he had spirit and intelligence, he was still a beast at heart—untamed and proud.
But now, in this moment of weakness, as he looked into the eyes of the person who had saved him from death, something within him shifted.
For the first time, trust sparked in his heart.
A quiet loyalty began to form—the kind that only appears when life is saved in a time of desperation.
The monkey who had once pushed everyone away… had been tamed.
And from this moment on, he would never leave Zhang Xiaofan's side.
