Chapter 4 - BATTLE

Lucen sprinted across the field, his spear held firmly in his hands.

As he got closer, a void being turned back, its fangs gleaming slightly with blood.

Lucen calmed his breathing, and launched the spear towards it.

The spear struck the void being with terrifying force, tearing huge chunks from its body.

The disturbance alerted the other void beings, making them turn back with ferocity.

The classmates also looked up, and saw Lucen.

"Lucen, get out of there now," David yelled desperately.

Lucen ignored his scream, and continued to move towards the void beings.

His spear flew back at an astonishing speed, and he caught it easily.

The void beings growled, and left the other students.

They all ran towards him savagely.

When Lucen saw them, he finally realised he made a huge mistake.

"Run away, use this to escape," he yelled towards the others.

"Are you crazy? It is our fight, why do you have to drag yourself into it," David screamed in anger, tears streaming down his face.

"Who told you I was going to fight, get away with the rest." Lucen said.

He got closer to the first void being, and made a quick thrust, then swung mid-thrust.

The spear slashed through the fadeclaw's head with brutality, killing it instantly.

Lucen moved his spear back, in time to block an attack.

David looked at Lucen with reluctance, his gaze shifting between the battle, and the opposite direction.

"You should know me, I wouldn't die in a place like this," Lucen finally said through gritted teeth.

David nodded slightly, then turned back.

"Let's go, we are only delaying his escape."

The others looked at him, then at Lucen.

They all raised two fingers, and placed it on their chest. "Velmira'tah," they echoed, their eyes flaring red. They turned their backs, and ran off in the opposite direction.

Lucen smiled when he saw the gesture.

David looked back once more. "Make sure you don't die," he said, then sprinted off.

Lucen jumped back, narrowly avoiding a claw aimed at his chest.

"They are finally gone", Lucen said.

You should also leave, Azarith's cold voice whispered.

"Why should I, this is the fastest way to get void cores."

There is no way you can defeat this many void beings, you will only get yourself killed.

"We won't know unless we try, moreover, Causacrum can transform to the shoes from earlier. If the situation becomes dire, I can escape."

I should have expected this, he is a crazy guy.

Lucen grinned widely, his gaze burning with anticipation.

He jumped back, creating a gap between him and the void beings.

He raised his spear slightly, pointing its tip at the advancing void beings. "Come on then," he said, his grin widening.

As if a trigger was activated, the void beings lunged at him in unison, and the field erupted in chaos.

Lucen's eyes narrowed as the wave of void beings surged forward. Some bore razor-sharp claws, some with twisted horns, and there were those with a dark, oily sheen that glimmered under the broken sky. But he didn't retreat.

He inhaled deeply, his body sinking slightly as he anchored his stance. The air around him shifted, like the brief pause before a lightning strike.

He launched forward, his spear spun violently in his hand. The tip met the first void being, impaling it clean through. The momentum pushed the void being backward, slamming it into two others.

He pulled his spear back, just in time to deflect a swipe at his face.

The impact made him skid back, his boots digging into the dark ground. A thin line of red slid down his cheek.

Even with the power of my eyes, I am not fast enough to dodge all of them,

he thought.

Growl! A huge roar was heard coming.

Lucen looked up slightly to see the source of the noise.

One of the void beings, larger than the others, its limbs elongated and mouth split unnaturally wide, hurled itself forward, its claws shimmering with strange energy.

Oh, shit! Lucen's expression changed slightly.

Then, the spear's shaft rippled with a pulse of silver-blue light. In a blink, it expanded, folding into a crescent-shaped shield that latched to Lucen's hand.

Without much thought, he held it firmly with his other hand, and got ready to block the attack.

The claw slammed against the shield, Crack! A shockwave burst outward. Lucen groaned, the force rattling his bones, but he held steady. He pushed forward, shoving the creature back with all his strength.

He quickly held the spear by the edge, and hurled it at the being.

With a whistling sound, it cut its body in half cleanly.

Lucen ducked, dodging a fireball that targeted him.

Then, he made a counter with a punch infused with error pulse.

The struck void being imploded instantly, setting off a chain explosion that ripped through the ones behind it.

Although I couldn't learn to materialise error pulse, I learnt some other applications in the process, he thought with pride.

Causacrum flew back at him, its form changing visibly mid-air.

"A sword?" Lucen smirked. "You guys are so screwed."

Lucen looked at the less than 5 void beings that remained, and pushed forward.

As he reached the first one, he side stepped, avoiding its armored tail.

Lucen made use of that brief moment to cut through its head.

Without waiting, he leapt for the next one.

Lucen moved among them, his body weaving through them like a dance.

With a powerful stab, he killed the last one.

"Ha!" Lucen exclaimed in exhaustion, his body visibly tired.

You managed to kill all of them, Azarith said with disbelief.

"Told you, didn't I," Lucen said with a smile.

I wasn't sure about it before, but nothing must happen to this boy, A silent thought passed through Azarith.

Lucen took Causacrum, and went on to retrieve the void cores from the void beings.

"That is 23 void cores," Lucen said with a smile.

Then as he placed it in his system space, the ground trembled.

Out of the shadow walked a tall, robed creature. Its body stitched from countless writhing limbs, a halo of darkness floating above its head like a crown.

Lucen's smile faltered, his mind in disarray.
