Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 – VPNs & Vengeance

The laptop booted.

Kodi cracked his knuckles dramatically like a street magician about to wow a crowd with something cheap and illegal.

Evan stood behind him, arms crossed, half-sure he was making the worst decision of his life.

"Twenty-three million," Kodi muttered, typing fast. "Clean account. Offshore. Cayman Islands. Shh... no taxes."

He hit enter.A little ka-ching sound played from the speakers.

Then Kodi frowned, paused—then made that face.

You know the one.

That fake-shocked, hand-over-mouth oops-I-didn't face.

"Oh," he said, eyes wide. "Silly me. Forgot to turn on the VPN."

Evan blinked.

"You… what?"

"Yeah, this whole building's IP is tagged now. Real rookie move. Hope that wasn't your real name on the transfer forms, Evan."

Evan rushed toward the screen.

"You son of a—"

Kodi swiveled the laptop toward him.

"Too late. Money's gone. Location's pinged. Interpol, IRS, hell even Nigerian scammers are probably watching this stream."

Suddenly, an alarm wailed in the hallway.

Kodi spun around in the chair with a smug smirk.

"Oh yeah. Also used your credentials to… unlock every cell in the maximum-security wing. Hope you don't mind a few colorful personalities joining us."

Screams. Shouting. One man barking like a dog. Another reciting Latin while doing handstands.

Evan turned pale.

"You set me up."

"No, we set them up," Kodi said. "But then I got bored. So now... I'm setting you up."

He stood, stretched, and unplugged the laptop.

"You should really reconsider working with double agents, Evan. We're such a pain in the ass."

Just then, a massive inmate with face tattoos and no pants sprinted past the door laughing hysterically.

"That's my cue."

Kodi patted Evan's shoulder, calm as a summer breeze.

"Oh, and hey—thanks for the laptop."

And just like that, he vanished down the hallway… right into the chaos he created, whistling a tune from Jeopardy.
