Chapter 2 - 2: Baffling Statement

Before Eithe could react and inquire the boy, he run away leaving her baffled.

She knew that his sister died and there was a body in the scene. Although she looks indistinguishable, her family proved that it was her.

So what does that child implies?

Was he pertaining to a twin sister, perhaps? But if her sister had a twin, then of course he'll know about it. Or was he hallucinating about her? Or was it the culprit? Did he/she disguised himself/herself as the victim?

With a sigh, she pushed that thought away for the meantime and began inspecting the room once again. She only has limited time to venture around and wasting them might lead to another death of a person.

And similar to their initial investigation, nothing looks amiss. Only that strange old shattered mirror in front of the body.

"No clues, no witnesses, only dead body and a mirror..." she muttered while in a deep thought.

First, how did the culprit knew about the victim? And why does it seems like he/she is only targeting women with pretty face?

Second, how did he/she entered their residence? If it was the commoners house, then it'd be easy but a noble's mansion where knights are stationed everywhere? That's a different case. So does he/she have a connection inside the mansion or does he/she works here?

However, according to the statements of the maids and knights here, nothing seemed suspicious...

"Wait... Isn't that more suspicious?"

But before she could finish processing her thoughts, Jaime interrupted wearing a weary expression. His black hair was messed and his brown eyes lacks luster and filled with nothing but weariness.

"Heyy... You gotta need to return back to the agency. Another dead woman was found..."

"You know, you don't have to involve me in this matter. Or is it related to our case?" she paused for a moment before proceeding. "Tell me, that woman was also incredibly beautiful? And there's also mirror shards around her dead body?" she deliberated and a nod was enough to confirm her suspicions, making her feel alarmed. Just how vicious is this killer is?

"Wait... Aren't the culprit only kills at nighttime?" she inquired after they excused theirselves to the Viscount.

He remained silent for a moment and spoke only after he rode in the carriage.

"The murder wasn't made today. The blood had dried out and the body was completely stiff. It also began to swell and fluids are leaking out from its nose and mouth. If I guessed it right, then that woman was already dead almost for three days." he reported and she frowned for a minute before replying.

"Then why did you leave that dead body alone?"

Jaime hesitated before answering. He knew about the hidden rivalry between that person and this woman, but he have no choice. It's either annoy this person or he'll be berated.

So with a sigh, he stated, "Seviel was there. He commanded me to fetch you at the Viscount's mansion."

And he guessed it right. Her brows furrowed even further and fury was evident on her bluish gray eyes. He didn't know what really happened between them but ever since he started working in their agency, this two will always fight even on simple things.

"That guy, again!" He watched as Eithe gritted her teeth and squinted her eyes. "How dare he... Why does he keep on interfering with my cases?!"

He knew that Eithe was always calm and collected no matter what case she encounter however all of her cool-headedness vanishes whenever Seviel was involved.

If he didn't knew any better, he would've conclude that this two were actually ex-lovers.

"Though, how did he know where you are?" he teased and Eithe flared up even more.

"That damnable man came here earlier. He was snooping around the crime scene and now, he's there again. And why did you let him handle that place? You should've just asked someone to fetch me at the Viscount's mansion and observe his work! What if he's actually the killer and is erasing his tracks and evidence in the crime scene?" she berated with intense huffing so Jaime just remained silent. He suddenly regreted teasing this woman.

Silence engulfed the carriage until they reach the scene of the crime. The location is a small rented room with a single bed and small table. On the table lies a shattered mirror and according to Jaime, that woman was sitting on the chair and has multiple stab on her face.

When the two got out of carriage, the scene that they caught up was Seviel questioning the people within the area. The body was already gone and currently under autopsy.

"So, you're saying you weren't home a few days ago? Do you have anyone to prove your statement?" he inquired and by the side, Aine, his detective partner was also questioning another person.

Jaime also did the same and Eithe choose to calm her annoyance and proceed on questioning one of the people.

It was a smooth process and they found nothing useful on their statement until a man in his late twenties named Arill answered that brought confusion to Eithe.

"What do you mean by a few days ago? I just saw Deidra yesterday at an inn. She was serving foods and drinks there and according to her she works there till 12 in the midnight." he answered while stroking his chin.

Deidra was the name of the victim. She doesn't have a last name since she's a commoner.

Eithe frowned. Wasn't Jaime said that the victim had died almost three days ago? So how did someone saw her yesterday night? Does this guy fooling her or he's just mistaken? "Are you certain? What if it was her twin or just someone who resembled her?"

"Nah, there's no way I'd be mistaken about a childhood friend. In addition, she's an only child and currently working here in the city to support her aged parents in the village." he shared and Eithe simply nod. His statement was helpful for this case.

Then she turned to Jaime who just finished questioning someone.

"Jaime, can you coordinate to the police to inform the victim's parents about her situation?" she then turned to Arill. "Do you know what village she belonged to?"

"It was the Sapphire Village." he answered and after a few more questions, Eithe walked near Jaime and whispered.

"Can you also investigate that man? He's suspicious. With that knowledge about the victim, he might be related to the culprit or the culprit himself."

Jaime, who was talented in gathering information and has many connections leaned on her and whispered back.

"Isn't that normal? He was a friend of the victim." Jaime countered.

"And that's even more reason to investigate him."
