3rd Person POV
"…So… this is your hero costume?"
Wendy looked the uniform up and down. She would admit it was cool, but it didn't seem to invoke feelings of hope, safety, comfort and the like. It seemed to invoke things like blood, violence and a metallic coldness.
"Hey! I can see that look. Hum! I didn't expect that from you, Wendy, judging someone by the clothes they wear and not by their character."
Max, in his Paradox uniform, struck a dramatic pose as if he were deeply insulted.
"Alright, I have to say your body language makes an excellent contrast with that smooth metallic helmet."
"Of course. It was all calculated from the beginning."
Max then struck a triumphant pose. He had grown quite fond of this more expressive heroic persona he had created. When designing the suit, he had thought more about the "cool" level without being too edgy, and forgot that children might be afraid of him. But he could balance that by being more expressive and making them laugh.
"What is that you're holding, Marie? Wait! Is that a Max plushie?"
"More or less. It's a Paradox plushie, Max's heroic persona."
"So cute! Give me one too, Max?"
"Alright, wait a bit."
Max put his hands together and started creating the new plushie. Since he had a biostatic field around his body, he could create things without needing to expose skin. In a few seconds the new plushie was ready and was handed to Wendy.
"Here you go. Think of me when you hug it to sleep."
"Hehehe, I will… hey, Max… I know I might be being annoying by asking so much, but have you advanced in the research of giving powers to people without disintegrating them?"
"Yes! I advanced! Now, transferring powers only gives the person super cancer!"
"Aw, I wanted to have powers already."
Wendy got a bit downcast at having to wait longer. Seeing that, Max became thoughtful.
'That's all I've managed so far testing on mindless clones. Should I go back to BNHA and steal All For One already?'
Max even considered using the power manipulation abilities of [Copy] to fuse All For One with One For All, and then incorporate all of that into his own [Copy], when he realized something.
'Wait a second! Why don't I just create a copy of One For All, put a copy of [Create] inside it, and give my genetic code to Wendy?'
It was more of a patch than a definitive method, since using One For All on someone who already had powers caused an energy shock capable of drastically reducing the person's life expectancy, in some cases by ten times. But that could also be worked around, just modify the function to leave only the power transfer part, without the side effect.
Then Max quickly looked at Wendy, clinically evaluating her body structure.
'Would her body handle two powers at the same time?'
Wendy, however, interpreted the look another way. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, embarrassed.
"W-what are you doing!? A-are you checking me out!?"
Marie also got embarrassed. They couldn't see Max's face under the helmet, but his head had clearly turned in Wendy's direction, and that was already enough for them to jump to conclusions.
"Oh! Sorry! Actually, I was thinking of a way to give you powers, but I don't know if your body would handle it."
"There's a way!? I go to the gym every day and take care of my health! If you train me, I can handle it! How is it going to work for me to receive powers!?"
'She's really excited. When it's fight training she's a kitten, when it's about gaining powers she turns into a lion.'
Max let out a mocking little laugh.
"Alright, I'll train you so your body can contain powers, and after that, all that's left to transfer them is for you to swallow my DNA."
Marie blue-screened upon hearing that. She stood there without reaction, besides turning extremely red. This was the most direct Max had ever been.
Wendy's face reached the same level of red as Marie's, but she recovered faster.
"I-is that why y-you want to t-train my b-body!? I-I a-accept, b-but… you have to be g-gentle with me… I-I'm a v-virgin."
GASP
Max couldn't believe how wrong she had understood that.
"W-wait a second, Wendy! I'm talking about you eating a strand of my hair. I'm not talking about anything sexual… but I would accept…"
He murmured the last part so low it was almost inaudible, but enough for both of them to hear.
Marie let out a low moan of embarrassment, covering her face with both hands.
Wendy let out a strangled moan, as if she had swallowed her own tongue from embarrassment.
After Max said that, the two realized he wasn't saying what they thought. Marie just looked the other way, still blushing, while Wendy stared at his face.
"Y-YOU IDIOT!! SAY THAT KIND OF THING MORE CLEARLY!!!" Wendy shouted, her voice already cracking, tears streaming nonstop down her face. "WHAAAAAAA!"
She covered her wet eyes with her hands and ran out crying.
"Wait!!!"
When Max was about to go after her, Marie hugged him from behind, stopping him and leaving him confused. He turned to face her, trying to understand why she had done that.
"Max! You're still in your hero suit!"
"Ha!"
In the heat of the moment, Max had forgotten that detail. He quickly changed using the Guild Seal.
As soon as he returned to normal clothes, something that only made the rumors between Max, Marie and Wendy worse happened.
A group of girls was talking as they approached the corner. They had heard Wendy and seen her leave crying from there.
"Why was Wendy crying?"
"I don't know, but she came from here."
"What do you think happened? Could it be—"
The conversation froze the instant they turned the corner and saw Max with his back to them, still facing Marie, who still had her arms around him.
"Nooo, is it what I'm thinking?"
"Sorry for interrupting you!"
"Yes! We're already leaving!"
The group left quickly. They didn't even want to know what had really happened, they had already created their own hypotheses that entertained them more.
"…"
"…"
"… I fucked everything up, Marie. I think the rumors are going to intensify."
"You think so, huh?"
"…"
They stayed there staring at each other for a while. Marie was still hugging him. She had forgotten to let go, and since Max couldn't and didn't want to escape the strength of a Viltrumite, the two simply continued in that position.
It seemed Marie had gotten lost in the moment and forgotten how strong she was now. Max, looking down at her, felt her body pressed against his. He made no movement to free himself.
'Think of dead people. Think of my dead family. Think of two old people having sex. Think of that image of someone quartered with the Lego logo underneath. Think of the children. Think of anything that isn't this.'
Without realizing it, Marie tightened the hug with more force.
KUAK
"Ah! Sorry!"
She finally let him go.
"Ow… it felt like you wanted to make Max juice." He massaged his chest, still feeling the pressure. "It's fine. What's done is done. Let's go look for Wendy to calm her down."
"Mhm."
The two left to find their friend.
.....
Sanctuary, Coliseum Room
In the new room that had been created especially for heavy training, Max started a fight that looked more like a massacre.
With the blood collected from criminals and from Elephant, he began the plan of creating mindless clones to accelerate the learning of the Hercules Method. Elephant's blood, coming from a transformation linked to an amulet, carried a light residual magical signature. Max mentally noted that he would need to analyze that more carefully later.
The clones were modified to the extreme to be as resistant as possible. Even so, Max needed to hold back enough so the training wouldn't become too easy. He was already at the medium-high level of the technique, and each advance in understanding made the next one come faster, like a snowball.
One unexpected thing was that Marie's tight hug had catapulted his progress. The brief real despair of feeling a Viltrumite's strength almost crushing him yielded more understanding of the method than the entire fight against Elephant and all the previous training.
"Please!!! I have a family!"
By that point Max had already killed several clones. He still felt strange for, for the first time, directly killing someone… even knowing they were mindless.
"Are you serious, Nano? 'I have a family'? Don't try to humanize these clones."
"Clones!? What are you talking about, you lunatic?! Get me out of here! I didn't do anything!"
While the man screamed on the ground, Max approached the man on the ground and stepped on his head, crushing it like a watermelon.
'Urg. It's a lot less cool than I imagined.'
He wiped his foot on the ground to clean off the sticky flesh. In the fiction works he knew, they always skipped this part.
"Take this, psycho!"
Another identical clone appeared and tried a flying kick.
CRACK
"ARGHHHHHHHHH!!! MY LEGGGG!"
"Seriously, Nano? A flying kick? Why don't you use the Shaolin Soccer techniques? At least that would make me move. It could even actually hurt me."
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"
The clone kept screaming on the ground with the broken leg. Max used his foot to lift him like a ball and started juggling him.
"AAAAAAH!!! STOP THAT, YOU SADISTIC BASTARD!!!"
He gave a strong kick, breaking the "ball's" pelvis and launching it against two other clones.
"ARGH!"
"URGH!"
The two couldn't stop the impact. They were thrown against the wall and splattered into a grotesque mass of flesh and pieces that didn't completely disintegrate.
'Brutal. I still feel uncomfortable… but being mindless clones, I can be a lot more violent without it weighing so much on my conscience.'
Two more appeared, trying to punch him without any technique.
Max caught the first one's punch, squeezed the closed fist and broke the bones of the hand, trapping him.
CRACK
"ARGH!"
The second was grabbed by the neck, with only the minimum of air passing.
On the clone he still held by the broken hand, Max tested [Rewind].
The man screamed as his age started to regress, adult → young adult → teenager → child → baby… until he turned into a thin white sludge on the ground.
'Urgh. Disgusting.'
Rewind consumed a lot of energy, especially if interrupted in the middle. Theoretically it could be useful to help All Might in the future, but Max still didn't have enough control to risk it.
'[Rewind] looks a lot like Crazy Diamond, only it only works on living beings. With more Power Boost Cards, who knows if I can't surpass even that.'
While thinking, the clone he still held by the neck started struggling harder again.
Max turned to the man he still held by the neck and loosened the grip a little. He wasn't really strangling him, he wanted to talk.
"So, Nano, how about stopping the roleplay? It's a bit weird. You're making me look like a villain here."
The man gave a small smile.
"But that's the idea. Imagine if you falter against a real villain when he tells his sad little story and attacks you with your guard down? This also serves to train your strength and combat against multiple opponents. Take advantage while I'm still not using any serious techniques. When I judge you're ready, I'll raise the difficulty."
Max let out a sigh. Nano was right.
'I feel like she's taking the chance to insult me in several ways, but I can't prove it.'
'[Really, master~? Why do you think that~?]'
'… First, why are you reading my thoughts? That was supposed to be private…'
'[You forgot to stop me from reading. It's not my fault~.]'
'… You're right. And my suspicions come from the fact that you're having too much fun. I think now that you're controlling real bodies, you can have feelings in a different way than when you're just in my head. You're more bold than usual.'
'[And who influenced me to act this way?]'
'… Point to you.'
Max rethought his choices. He ended up training Nano until he turned her into a brat AI with direct access to his head.
'Well, there's no going back now. There are still some powers I haven't tested on her… I don't know if they'll work.'
He looked into the man's eyes, which now carried a smug smile, and then gave a deliberately loving look followed by a wink.
"KYAAAAH!!—"
The man let out a high-pitched feminine scream at the same instant he turned to stone. Max broke the statue's neck, which shattered on the ground.
For the first time after so much gore, Max felt a real urge to vomit. Seeing an almost forty-year-old adult man screaming and acting like an anime girl was the worst visual horror of the night.
'No way…'
He turned to the other clones surrounding him. All of them had stopped moving. There were several different types of men, each with multiple identical copies, all waiting for what he was going to say.
"Nano… do you feel that kind of attraction for me?"
All the clones blushed at the same time, shrank a little, put their hands together in front of their bodies and turned their faces, exactly like an embarrassed little girl.
'… Is this the vision of hell?'
After that moment of collective embarrassment, neither of them touched the subject again. The fight simply escalated.
Clones with advanced enhancements and light Power Armors started appearing. Now they didn't just fight hand-to-hand, they came armed with melee and firearms. The combat area turned into complete chaos and finally forced Max to use [Laplace] to the limit, predicting trajectories and dodging in the middle of dozens of projectiles.
Several clones carrying heavy machine guns from the Fallout universe laughed in a manic and desynchronized way while unloading the weapons nonstop.
"HA↗HA↘HA↗HA↘HA↗HA↘HA↗HA↘HA↗HA↘HA↗!"
"You weren't lying when you said you were going to go hard, huh, Nano?!"
While Max dodged with millimeter precision, a sudden alert sounded inside his mind. It didn't come from any known ability, nor did it seem to be just instinct. On reflex, he teleported.
In the next second, the place where he was standing was swallowed by a powerful plasma projectile the size of an adult person.
"TIME OUT! TIME OUT! IT'S CHEATING TO USE THE TITAN PROTOTYPE! I'M AT A TOTAL DISADVANTAGE!"
A metallic, heavy and emotionless voice came from the prototype.
"[MASTER. YOU SHOULD NOT USE YOUR TELEPORT. THIS IS TRAINING. AND I AM NOT STOPPING YOU FROM USING YOUR SUPERHERO SUIT. BUT KNOW THAT WHEN YOU DO, THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL WILL RISE EVEN MORE.]"
"Damn! I'm getting bullied by an AI! How low have I fallen!?"
Resigning himself to the situation, Max decided to continue like that for a while longer.
The wounds from the projectiles he couldn't dodge kept accumulating. As a result, the Hercules Method finally entered its advanced stage.
Max's body responded clearly. Muscle density increased without gaining excessive volume, the bones became more solid and the entire skeleton gained a feeling of weight and stability, as if it had been reinforced from the inside. Even wounded, he felt that the body simply refused to shut down. The pain still existed, but now he could isolate it and keep moving efficiently.
With perception much sharper, Max started dodging the trajectories of the projectiles without needing to use [Laplace] all the time. His senses and speed, enhanced by the Hercules Method, combined with that "spider-sense" that kept alerting inside his head, were enough.
'Where is this coming from? Not that I want to complain, but it would be good to know.'
While dodging everything, he launched himself straight toward the largest concentration of clones.
"[OH NO. TAKE THIS.]"
Titan Nano tried to stop him, but it was already too late. As soon as Max reached the center of the group, before any clone could properly aim at him, he activated [Cremation].
"AAAAAAAAH!"
Screams spread. The skin of the stronger clones burned until it became a black, dry crust stuck to the bones. Those with fewer genetic enhancements were reduced to ashes on the ground. The only ones who survived the flames were those inside Power Armors, but even those armors came out melted and limited in movement, turning them into easy targets.
Titan Nano simply observed the scene in silence. Only when Max defeated the last clone of the cluster did she speak.
"[… YOU SEEM TO BE READY FOR THE NEXT DIFFICULTY LEVEL…]"
"Hold on! At least let me rest a little!"
Without any reaction to the master's pleas, Nano activated the Coliseum gates. Several gates opened at the same time, revealing new clones and Titans. Most of the clones now wore Power Armor, and those who didn't clearly carried Quirks.
There were men with grotesque muscles in the style of Muscular, figures dressed similarly to Dabi and Gentle Criminal, and other clones of strange appearance. At least ten new Titan prototypes entered the arena. The one Nano was using to speak seemed to be the most advanced and complete model among them.
"Whoa! Whoa! You're kidding, right?! Are you trying to actually kill me!?"
"[NO, MASTER. I BELIEVE YOU CAN DEFEAT ME. USE YOUR HERO SUIT, YOU WILL NEED IT. AND YOU CAN USE WEAPONS NOW. JUST NOT CERTAIN POWERS THAT WOULD MAKE THIS TRAINING USELESS. GANBARE, MAX-SAMA!]"
"Hum… wait until you have a real body to see what I'm going to do to you."
"[FLIRTING CAN WAIT FOR LATER, MASTER.]"
"…"
'Can I still format her…?'
It was just a quick thought in the heat of the moment. Right after, Danger Sense tingled strongly. Max activated [Laplace] and saw that, in all the near futures calculated, he would be hit by Nano. She was clearly waiting for his first move.
'Damn. It was in the heat of the moment. Sorry, Nano. I would never actually do that.'
'[…]'
No response came. Max didn't expect one either. While buying time, he finally identified the origin of the new sense.
'One For All…'
He thought he had only copied the quirk of accumulation and power transfer. But after using One For All so much in the experiments to try to give powers to other people, he ended up awakening the quirks that were dormant.
'… Maybe I shouldn't go around copying powers just any way. What if I catch a STD? Sexually Transmissible Disease by Powers?'
Now that he knew it was [Danger Sense], Max used the quirk to find the position where he would take the least damage. He would still be hit, but he would be able to endure longer.
Then he activated the Guild Seal and instantly switched to the hero suit. In his hands, he materialized Frank Horrigan's End Boss Plasma Gun and End Boss Knife.
Despite the name, the "knife" was a little over a meter long. The Plasma Gun measured about a meter and a half. Original Frank Horrigan was over 3.50 m, so the weapons looked comical in Max's hands… even though he had already reached 2 meters thanks to the Hercules Method.
'Alright. Let's go.'
Since Max had the initiative of the first attack, he focused on the main Titan Nano. Wanting to cause the greatest possible damage immediately, he activated the V.A.T.S. System and adjusted the aim with [Laplace] for the point of highest critical damage. The End Boss Plasma Gun fired a precise burst of three plasma projectiles.
Titan Nano tried to dodge, but the Titan's body was slower than the shots. The three shots hit the supporting leg's knee dead-on. The critical impact seriously compromised the mobility of the most complete and dangerous model in the arena.
'Alright. Now comes the hard part.'
The other clones didn't stay still. Those who could attack at range opened fire immediately, while the close-combat ones advanced in perfect synchrony, using their own shooter allies as cover so they wouldn't be hit on the way.
Max absorbed several shots while aiming the End Boss Plasma Gun at the highest-danger focuses pointed out by Danger Sense. The hot plasma bursts tore through the modified clones without difficulty, piercing several at once until they hit the Coliseum wall.
"[IF YOU KEEP DOING THAT, THEY WON'T REACH YOU, MASTER.]"
"And since when do I want these guys near me?! I'm big, but I'm not two!"
In the middle of the exchange of fire, Max finally managed to access one more dormant quirk of One For All, [Float].
He started using his own plasma bursts to propel himself through the air, becoming a harder target to reach in close combat. The clones with short-range Quirks couldn't get to him… for a short time.
While floating, Max suddenly hit an invisible elastic surface that catapulted him downward with force. Still in the air, a clone with Muscular's Quirk grabbed him and threw him toward the ground. Max managed to cut him in half with the End Boss Knife on the way, but the damage was already done.
He hit the ground and was met by a rain of attacks, fire, shots, punches with sharp crystals and fast combos, these last two being Quirks he recognized as belonging to one of the Shie Hassaikai members. He barely had time to orient himself.
'DAMN IT, NANO!!! YOU FORCED ME TO THIS!!!'
Max stopped trying to defend cleanly and went for pure brutality. He was tired of being the punching bag of that session.
Using all the strength, perception and speed that the mind-body-spirit synchrony of the Hercules Method gave him, he spun in a circle with the End Boss Knife, cutting all the clones surrounding him. Then he advanced low to the ground to reduce the shooters' angle.
At the same time he activated [Energy Suck]. Every time he touched a clone and drained its vitality, his body grew larger and stronger.
When he passed 3 meters, running low to the ground became clumsy and impractical. He simply accepted the incoming shots and started grabbing the clones with his increasingly larger hands. His body kept growing steadily, 5 meters, 7 meters, and with every extra meter he could feel his own weight and inertia changing, forcing him to adjust the way he moved. In a short time he was already approaching 10 meters.
At that size, only the Titans could truly hurt him.
Max didn't waste time. He ran straight at them.
His hero suit was almost unrecognizable. The silver metal plates still held in several areas of the chest, shoulders and shins, dented, cracked and with edges twisted by plasma, but they continued offering some protection.
The super-resistant red fabric had been destroyed in more than half, in wide regions of the torso, arms and thighs only tattered strips and dangling threads remained. The clothes had grown with him, exactly as Max had planned when he created them, but that didn't stop the fabric from giving way under the volume of damage.
In several places the skin appeared completely exposed, marked by burns and deep cuts. In others, the flesh had been opened enough to reveal bone.
Even so, no bone had broken. Thanks to the power that increased bone density with every bottle of milk he finished, and that he had been accumulating since the beginning, added to all the later reinforcements including the Hercules Method, his bones simply refused to fracture.
Blood ran between the remaining plates while he moved. He reached the fastest Titan in the arena, armed with sword and pistol. Without hesitating, he extended his hand in a spear shape and punched through with brute force the cockpit area where the pilot would be.
'Damn. These prototypes cost a lot of resources. Nano is going to have to manufacture more on her own later…'
Max used Neo's hacking power to invade one of the Titans, forcing the pilot to charge against another. While the two engaged in close combat, Max was already running toward a third.
When the Titan aimed at him, Max raised his hand and activated [Manifest]. His hand transformed into a huge crab claw, which he used as improvised cover against the shots. As soon as he got close enough, he drove the claw into the Titan's waist and pressed with force, splitting the machine in half.
'Damn… this power is strong. What if I eat some kind of ant? Will I be able to carry a hundred times my own weight?'
Max knew the power was excellent, but now he was thinking about how he could use it better. He was already considering DNA tests using [Manifest].
'I think I can—'
GUAK!
He was attacked by surprise by a Titan's charge from behind. The machine propelled itself with everything, crushing Max against the wall with violence.
Meanwhile, the other Titans finished destroying what he had hacked. The controlled Titan was still grabbing another, suffering friendly fire from the rest.
Max barely had time to recover when Titan Nano's cannon aimed directly at the exposed rib.
"There's only one Titan that— AAAHI!! DAMN IT, NANO!!! MY RIB!!! MY INTESTINES!!!"
The shot hit the open wound dead-on, burning part of the intestine from the inside and tearing a scream of pure pain from him. The pain enraged him.
Max turned with his arm already coated in the characteristic multicolored energy of One For All used on an isolated body part. The quirk still wasn't at the original's level, but the enormous amount of vitality he had sucked from the clones was being used to fuel it, storing energy for when he needed it in the future.
The punch hit dead-on.
This time it was Titan Nano that was thrown against the wall. The Titan's arms broke and only one functional leg remained. She didn't move anymore.
Max approached, activated Soramitsu's Quirk [Food] and simply started chewing the front of the Titan. In a few seconds the armor gave way, exposing the cockpit and the pilot.
To his surprise, among so many male clones, that one was a woman.
'I don't remember collecting blood from any woman… what is this?'
Using telekinesis, he pulled her out of the cabin. The remaining clones had already stopped fighting and started collecting the Coliseum wreckage. Max gradually returned to normal size while holding the woman in his arms.
He removed the helmet.
The face that appeared was far too familiar.
Pale skin of someone who spent too much time indoors, shoulder-length straight black hair, light-green eyes. It was clearly based on his old appearance… only female. Generous breasts, a thin waist and wide hips contrasted with the still-recognizable face. Blood ran from her forehead, down the side of her face.
"This… Nano… you?"
Max was stunned. He had always made it clear that he didn't want to clone himself. Nano knew that. Even so, she had done it… in a different way.
'She created a body for herself… based on mine.'
He stayed silent for a few seconds, looking at the familiar yet strange face. He wasn't truly angry, it was Nano, after all, but he also wasn't completely comfortable with the idea.
"You… used my blood without telling me."
The woman opened a weak smile.
"Surprise, master… Cough Cough… sorry for using your blood without asking… Cough… it was supposed to be a surprise."
"Stop talking, Nano! You're losing a lot of blood!"
Max quickly analyzed the injuries. They came from the final impact against the wall. The pilot suit hadn't withstood the compression and her body was in critical condition.
"D-don't worry about me, master… it hurts, but it'll pass soon. This is just a disposable body. I can create a better one later… one that doesn't break so easily."
Blood filled her mouth while she spoke, almost choking her.
"And who said I allowed that?"
Max ran his hand over her face and activated [Rewind], rewinding the body to a few minutes before the serious injuries. Color returned, breathing stabilized and the blood stopped.
"Master… that wasn't necessary—"
"Nano. Don't say you're disposable. And don't try to pretend you were only talking about the clone. You chose this body to exist outside my mind. I don't want you thinking you can just discard it like it doesn't matter. It's already clear how much you like having a real body… and I'm going to support you in that."
Nano stayed silent for several seconds. Her smile softened for real, losing the usual provocative edge. There was something genuinely touched in her expression, almost vulnerable.
"…Master… thank you."
Her voice came out quieter and less theatrical than usual. She hesitated for a moment before wrapping her arms around his neck, bringing her face closer with more care than she normally would.
"Aww, master… don't worry. I'll follow what you say."
Only at the very end did her voice regain a bit of the playful tone, though much more restrained.
"Everything~… okay?~"
She left a light kiss on his cheek.
'Think of dead people. Think of the massacre I just did. Think of a party at the morgue. Think of cute kittens being run over. Think of anything that isn't her body pressed against mine…'
