Chapter 10: The Terms of the Deal
It wasn't long before Harun returned to the room. His stern face revealed nothing, but he watched Kaelen and Emily with sharp eyes, as if seeing them as pieces on a chessboard. Layla followed him, worry etched on her face. She sat beside Emily, trying to calmly reassure her.
"So, are you done talking to her?" Harun asked Kaelen, his voice cold.
"Yes," Kaelen replied, then looked at Emily. "She understands the situation."
Harun offered a faint smile, "Good. That saves a lot of time. Now it's our turn. I've offered you protection and resources, and in return, I want one thing from you."
"What is it?" Kaelen asked, aware that the terms would be difficult.
"I want you to be the shelter's guardian," Harun said, gesturing with his hand toward the door. "Most creatures avoid approaching, but some still pose a threat. I want you to take responsibility for our protection and use your power to defend this place. In return, you will have a double portion of food, and we will designate a safe place for you and Emily."
No reaction showed on Kaelen's face. It was exactly as he expected.
"What about Emily?" Kaelen asked, ignoring the other conditions entirely.
"Emily will work here in the medical field with Layla," Harun replied. "Her healing ability will be priceless. But don't worry, we won't overwork her. Her primary task will be treating serious injuries. We consider her a valuable member of our community, and her safety is our top priority... under your care, of course."
Kaelen understood that every word was calculated. The deal wasn't just an offer; it was a veiled threat. Harun was tying Emily's fate to his decision, and he was placing her under his direct responsibility, ensuring his complete commitment.
"Agreed," Kaelen said calmly, looking directly into Harun's eyes. "I accept the deal. But on one condition."
Layla's head shot up in surprise, while Harun fixed his gaze on Kaelen. He had not expected this young man to dare to impose his own terms.
"What is it?" Harun asked sharply.
"No one interferes in my personal affairs," Kaelen replied. "When I'm not on a mission, I don't want anyone watching me. And I alone determine how I use my power."
Harun fell silent for a long moment, studying Kaelen's face, calculating the risks. He knew that giving this mysterious young man complete freedom was a risky move. But refusing him might make him a dangerous adversary. Then he offered a faint smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Deal."
Harun finished speaking and walked out of the room. Layla was still in a state of shock, looking back and forth between Kaelen and Emily. Kaelen looked at Emily and saw a mix of fear and admiration in her eyes. Things had changed. He was no longer just a survivor trying to get by; he had become part of a new equation, and he had to find a solution to it in order to achieve his true goals. He knew that this deal was only the beginning of a deeper and more complex confrontation.
