The air in the dimly lit bar was thick with the smell of stale beer. Katsuki Bakugo was a prisoner, bound to a solid metal chair, his hands locked in thick restraints. He was surrounded.
Tomura Shigaraki sat at the bar, idly scratching his neck as he watched a static-filled broadcast. Dabi leaned against a wall, his turquoise eyes half-closed and bored. Toga was bouncing in her seat, legs swinging as she sharpened a knife. Twice, he was arguing with himself, and Mr. Compress simply stood by, the picture of a patient showman.
"You see, Katsuki Bakugo?" Shigaraki's voice cut through the silence. "The press conference. They're bowing, apologizing, looking pathetic. Is that what you call a hero? Is that the organization you want to be a part of?"
He gestured to the TV, where Nezu and Aizawa were in the middle of their press statement.
"They're weak," Shigaraki hissed. "They follow rules that choke them. They couldn't even protect you. They couldn't protect those other brats at the camp. We just… took you. And now, they're bowing. Pathetic."
"They're gonna come for me," Bakugo growled, his voice low.
"Let them!" Toga chirped, her smile wide. "I hope they do! I'd love to cut them up! Especially that cute rabbit girl! She's so fast and strong!"
'I hope Akaza hears this....' Bakugo thought.
The name made Dabi's eyes open fully. He remembered the screams. He remembered Muscular's pure terror echoing through the forest. He said nothing, but his lazy posture tensed.
"We're not here to fight you, Bakugo," Shigaraki continued, trying a different, more persuasive tone. "We're here to recruit you. You're strong. You're powerful. You're violent. You're just like us. But they try to put a leash on you, don't they? They tell you to hold back, to be 'heroic'. We're offering you a place where you can be yourself. Where you can unleash all that power. What do you say?"
Bakugo was quiet for a long moment, staring at the floor. The villains leaned in, sensing a potential victory.
"...You're right about one thing," Bakugo finally said, his voice quiet.
Shigaraki's visible eye widened in hope. "Oh?"
"All Might's ideals… they're not always right," Bakugo continued.
"Sometimes… they're just not enough to fix the real trash in the world."
"Yes! Exactly!" Toga squealed, clapping her hands.
"That's why…" Bakugo took a deep breath. "...I'm done. I'm done with that kid… the one who used to follow, who fanboyed over All Might all the time. I've decided... I'm going to follow a different path."
Shigaraki smiled, with a cracked-lip grin. He was winning. "A path of true freedom?"
"No," Bakugo said, looking up, his red eyes burning with a cold, terrifying intensity that was not his usual rage. "I'm following Akaza's path."
The name hit the room like a sonic boom.
The smiles vanished. Toga's giddy energy evaporated, replaced by a cold stillness. Dabi, who had been leaning, stood up straight, his stitched expression tightening. Compress shifted, his hand unconsciously moving to his side. They hadn't seen what happened. But they had heard it. They had been in the forest. They remembered Muscular's inhuman, agonized screams echoing through the night. The screaming that had just… stopped.
Bakugo saw their reactions, and for the first time, he smiled. A wide, sharp, sadistic grin that was far more terrifying than theirs.
"Yeah, that's right," he sneered. "You remember him, don't you? You remember what he did to your muscle-freak buddy? That's what I'm talking about. That's how it's supposed to be. When shitheads like you try to kill innocent people, when your plan almost gets three of my classmates murdered... trash like you doesn't deserve a hero like All Might. You don't deserve a trial or a cell."
He raised his bound hands, flipping both middle fingers.
"You deserve a hero like Asura. So fuck off, you pussies."
Shigaraki's face contorted in pure, homicidal rage. "You… you little… I'LL KILL YOU!"
He lunged, his hand outstretched, five fingers aimed at Bakugo's face.
KABOOOOOOOM!
The entire wall of the bar disintegrated. A massive form burst through the brick and plaster in a cloud of dust.
"I'LL HAVE YOU RETURN MY STUDENT, VILLAINS!"
Before the villains could even react, Kamui Woods was already inside, his Lacquered Chain Prison shooting out, binding Toga, Twice, and Compress. Gran Torino was a yellow blur, kicking Dabi in the head and knocking him to the ground. Edgeshot, a paper-thin line, had already subdued Kurogiri, his body wedged inside the warpgate-user's vital point.
"Young Bakugo! Are you alright?!" All Might yelled, his massive form filling the ruined bar.
Bakugo just stared, his mind still processing the sudden, overwhelming rescue. He looked at All Might, the symbol he had revered his entire life. And all he could think was, He's not the one I'm following anymore.
"NO!" Shigaraki shrieked, seeing his entire squad captured. "NO, NO, NO!"
"It's over, Tomura Shigaraki!" All Might declared.
Suddenly, a thick, gray, foul-smelling liquid erupted from Kurogiri's mouth.
It poured over the captured villains and over Bakugo.
"NO!" All Might roared, lunging forward. "DON'T YOU DARE!"
The world dissolved. Bakugo felt a sickening, pulling sensation, and then he was somewhere else entirely.
He landed hard on a concrete floor, the smell of dust and ruin filling his lungs. He was in the middle of a massive, destroyed factory. The League was there, all of them having been teleported. And in the center of the destruction… was him. The man in the mask. All For One.
"Failure… again, Tomura?" the man's voice, calm and paternal, echoed from a complex life-support system.
Before Shigaraki were, the heroes. Best Jeanist, Mt. Lady, Gang Orca, Tiger… they were all half dead, shocked, and scared of what all of them had just faced.
Bakugo watched in absolute horror as the villains were freed.
"Master…" Shigaraki wept.
"It's alright, Tomura. You tried," All For One said. "Kurogiri, get them out of here."
A warp gate began to open.
"I WLLL NOT LET YOU ESCAPE!"
All Might landed between them, his face a mask of pure, primal fury. The two titans stared each other down.
"So, you came after all, All Might," All For One mused. He unleashed a blast, sending All Might flying back, crashing through several city blocks. He then turned to his League. "Force-open the gate, Kurogiri."
The portal swirled. "Go, Tomura. Take the boy."
The villains began to move. Toga, Twice, Dabi. Mr. Compress, his arm still intact, moved towards Bakugo, his hand outstretched.
"It's been a pleasure, Katsuki Bakugo. But you must come with us-"
"Shit, not again," Bakugo growled, bracing himself, helpless.
Destructive Death: Air Type
A blue, invisible shockwave, faster than sound, ripped through the air. It wasn't a blast. It was a blade.
Compress's outstretched arm didn't just get hit; it disintegrated from the elbow down. A fine red mist and shrapnel of bone and flesh were all that remained.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!" Compress shrieked, collapsing to his knees, clutching the bloody, cauterized stump.
Time stopped.
Bakugo looked up into the dark rafters of the ruined factory. A figure dropped down, landing between him and the villains. He didn't make a sound. His black hero costume was pristine. His gauntlets glinted in the dim light.
Bakugo stared at his back, and he felt it. The same overwhelming sense of awe and safety he had felt as a child when he first saw All Might on TV.
"Found you," Akaza said, his voice a calm, casual grin.
He glanced at the screaming, writhing Mr. Compress on the ground, and then looked away, his expression one of utter boredom.
All For One, who had been focused on All Might's return, paused. He turned his head, his mask hiding his surprise.
Just then, All Might landed, a crater forming around him. He saw Bakugo, he saw the League, and then he saw Akaza, standing over the screaming Compress.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOUNG AKAZA?!" All Might boomed, his voice a mix of confusion and horror, thinking the injury on the villain was done by All For One. "YOU MUST LEAVE RIGHT NOW-"
Akaza didn't even look at him. He ignored the Symbol of Peace.
His black eyes locked directly onto All For One. A slow, dangerous smile spread across Akaza's face. A predator recognizing a true threat.
"Next time we meet," Akaza said, his voice clear and carrying in the ruined space, "you will die by my hands."
All For One actually chuckled, a dry, synthesized sound. "What a bold child."
Before All Might could yell again, Akaza moved.
Soru
He grabbed Bakugo by the collar of his shirt, and in the next instant, they were gone. They just… vanished, a faint pop of displaced air the only sign they were ever there.
All Might stood stunned, the situation having been taken completely out of his control.
All For One's fist, powered by a dozen quirks, sent him flying again.
"Go," AFO commanded his league. "Get to the new location." He watched the spot where the boy had been. He hadn't felt fear... but it was the first time he had felt surprised in a very, very long time.
