MHGA Chapter 209 – David Who Doesn't Understand Women

"Wait—"

David watched as Lucy got off the train at the station and quickly walked away.

Why?

David, who knew nothing about romance, couldn't figure out what she was thinking.

Were girls always this hard to understand?

What should he do now?

David activated his Sandevistan and chased after her, while also frantically messaging the other Hunters in the Gathering Channel.

"I ran into Lucy! But she seemed mad at me! She ditched me and just walked off! What should I do?!!!"

"?"

Kairo Retsu replied with a slow question mark, then asked:

"You met Lucy? Tell us exactly what happened!"

"Hahahaha!"

Kazuma was the first to send a mocking message:

"You probably rushed things too much. That girl doesn't even know you yet!"

"It went like this…"

David quickly typed out everything that had happened earlier and shared it in detail with the Hunters in the Gathering Channel.

Even the Hunters who hadn't been talking suddenly popped up after reading what David wrote, and the whole channel became noisy and animated.

In the end, Kairo Retsu also said:

"David… you do realize… you're coming on a bit too strong, don't you?"

"I think David-san was very brave in expressing his feelings." said Tanjiro. "But why did Miss Lucy get angry…? David-san! Hold on! I'm going to ask Shinobu Kocho!"

After dropping that message, Tanjiro immediately disappeared from the chat.

At that moment, David ignored the chatter and focused entirely on chasing after Lucy with his Sandevistan.

Meanwhile, in the Gathering Channel, Kairo Retsu chatted with the others:

"Hey! Didn't expect David to run into Lucy so soon! Must be fate!"

"I hope… David gets what he wishes for," said Himmel wistfully. "After all, time is short."

David finally caught up to Lucy again.

But Lucy didn't acknowledge him at all—she kept moving.

Frustrated by David's persistence, she eventually stopped in a deserted alley and turned to confront him.

She jabbed a finger into David's chest:

"You… what exactly are you trying to do?!"

"You suddenly show up with that cyberware, stubbornly saying you want to help me… What's your deal?"

Her tone carried an edge of danger.

David had said he liked her earlier—but this was Night City.

In a city like this, truth was rare. If you didn't tread carefully, you'd end up buried in an unmarked grave outside the city limits.

She didn't believe someone would just randomly show up in front of her like this.

"Who sent you?!"

Her irises lit up with netrunner glow, her hacking protocols fully locking onto David. She looked ready to fry his cyberware and kill him on the spot.

"Was it Arasaka?!"

She stared intently at David.

Maybe he was an assassin sent by Arasaka, chasing her down because of her past. Everything he said before might've been a lie, just to get close.

If that were the case, she needed to eliminate him now.

"I'm not… I…"

David opened his mouth to explain—but had no idea how to even begin.

How was he supposed to say it?

That he knew about the future where they became lovers?

That he'd fallen for her after seeing a future that played out like a tragic film, and had dreamed about her ever since?

"I… I…"

David clenched his jaw and activated his Sandevistan, hoping to use the extra time to think through what to say.

Inside the slowed-down world, David's mind raced.

But to Lucy, all she saw was David standing frozen—then suddenly, blood gushing from his nose.

"!"

Lucy was stunned.

She hadn't even started frying his cyberware—why was he already bleeding from the nose?

Then she watched David slump to the ground—collapsing face-first into the alley in front of her.

"...?"

Lucy grabbed his collar and lifted him—

Only to realize… this weirdo had really passed out.

Blood was running from his nose and mouth.

"This guy… What the hell is he even doing?"

Lucy exhaled deeply.

———

About ten minutes later, David regained consciousness.

His whole body felt gross and nauseous. When he opened his eyes, he saw the face of a Black woman in a paramedic uniform.

"What's wrong with him?" Lucy's voice came from nearby.

The paramedic replied:

"Classic rookie mistake. Cyberware installation with zero defensive support… What's he using for immunosuppressants? What about his insurance?"

Lucy glanced down at David, lying on the gurney:

"No idea. He's just some weird little brat."

"Didn't even bother."

David croaked out a hoarse reply:

"I didn't think… it'd hit me that hard…"

Everything felt eerily familiar to David.

This paramedic's face looked exactly like the one from his original future—the one who worked with the Scavs. Maybe it was even the same person.

"I… I'm fine!"

David suddenly felt a surge of energy rising inside.

His body recovered rapidly—an overwhelming vitality pouring through him. His Sandevistan burnout faded fast, and he sat upright, ripping off his oxygen mask.

Grabbing Lucy's hand, David exclaimed:

"I really… just wanted to know your name!!"

"I'm David Martinez!"

He held her hand tightly and repeated: "I want to know your name!"

Lucy hadn't expected that to be the first thing out of his mouth after waking up.

But then—she saw the paramedic behind him quietly draw a pistol.

"Now's not the time for that," Lucy said. "Didn't think this bastard would stoop to working with Scavs…"

"You dumb rookie! I thought you might actually be dangerous—but you're just a reckless idiot!"

Lucy kicked the gurney—just like she had in the original story—knocking the paramedic off balance. She leapt onto the gurney, grabbed David, and the two of them flew out of the ambulance.

"Lucy!"

With her glowing hair billowing in the wind, the girl shouted into David's face:

"You said you wanted to team up with me, right?!

My name is… Lucy!!"

"Dumb rookie!!"
