Chapter 4 - The Recommending Hand

At eighteen, he took on a role as a neighborhood patrolman.

...

At twenty-one, he became a chief surgeon at the Second Hospital of the capital.

However, what set him apart from others in the medical field was the fact that he performed only one surgery a month—an operation that was in such high demand that there was no price too high for it.

Why? Because his hands were known as "God's Hands."

And yet, despite his prestigious background, he was not in the capital doing what others expected of him. Instead, he worked as a school doctor in an ordinary school, but unlike others, he had an assistant. All the work was left to his assistant.

A descendant of noble bloodlines, who, in the end, chose neither the military, the political scene, nor business, and who, even though holding a degree from a foreign university, did not attend classes.

Unlike other aristocrats, his lack of ambition seemed almost excessive.

And yet, in the capital, even the Cheng family's elder doted on him excessively, much to the confusion of those around him. Why did the old patriarch, known for his strictness, shower such affection on a son who seemed so uninterested in progressing?

"Click—"

The door to the infirmary locked.

The girl stood motionless, her grip on the medication, seemingly frozen.

After a long moment, as the shadowed figure faded from view, she finally reacted, wincing as she pressed her hand to her left cheek.

It hurt!

The following morning.

Qin Ran descended the stairs for breakfast, her entire being wrapped in an oppressive aura.

The faint redness beneath her eyes hinted at either a bad mood or a sleepless night.

"Later, Assistant Chen will take you to Hengchuan First," Ning Qing placed her chopsticks down, her gaze lifting to meet Qin Ran's. "I've made an appointment with a specialist to see your grandmother."

Earlier, when Qin Yu started school, Ning Qing had personally escorted her. Now, however, she could not afford to show this same level of care.

She would also have to face the Lin family's relatives, who were always eager to watch the drama unfold. Ning Qing gritted her teeth in frustration.

She wished Qin Ran were more cooperative, but as long as Qin Yu was content, she would be satisfied.

Lin Qi, holding a newspaper in one hand and a phone in the other, walked into the living room.

Ning Qing asked him what was wrong.

Lin Qi appeared uncomfortable. "It's about Ran Ran," he said, looking at Qin Ran with a tone of apology. "I'm sorry, but Director Ding just replied, and it seems unlikely that you'll be able to enter Hengchuan First."

Ning Qing's fingers tightened, her embarrassment evident as Lin Qi's words cut into her.

Qin Yu finished her milk, grabbed the bag handed to her by Zhang Sao, and stood up. "Dad, Hengchuan First is easy to get into. Why can't sister make it?"

Her head tilted slightly, her voice full of innocence and confusion.

Ning Qing's fingers trembled, and the servants' gazes were uncomfortable, as if she had been exposed in some way. She felt utterly mortified.

"Go to class first. You'll be late," Lin Qi looked at Qin Yu with a sense of helplessness.

He then turned to Qin Ran and said, "This is my mistake. Wende High has excellent faculty too, doesn't it, Yu'er?"

Qin Yu couldn't help but smile, nodding before grabbing her bag and heading for the door.

Qin Ran, still irritated from waking up, didn't outwardly express her frustration.

Her head was lowered, a piece of fried dough in her mouth, her long lashes casting shadows over her strikingly beautiful eyes.

"Ah, no need to trouble you, Uncle," her voice, though restrained, carried an air of defiance and indifference as she casually added, "I have a recommendation letter from the principal of Hengchuan First."
