Chapter 29 - The Smell of Lies

[FOURTH ROUND: AMERICA.]

The voices had fallen silent.

Even the French people's breathing seemed absent, crushed by the dull noise that vibrated beneath our feet.

The smell of dried blood, oiled weapons and fear hung in the air.

In front of me, the Americans were taking their places again. They had that beastly look.

Djesone cracked his neck. His smile was anything but happy.

- Okay. No more joking around. Let's get things back in order.

He scanned the table, then pointed a finger at me.

- And you, you're going to throw this die straight

I stared at him without a word.

Then blew

The other Americans had fallen silent just after slipping in their weapons. Their watches glowed faintly. The game was slowly draining them of their coins, their reason, their courage, their hope.

[CHOOSE YOUR NUMBERS. AND THE BET.]

Djesone speaks to the prime minister:

- Number 4. Ten million.

A-09, pale.

- Ten?! But? I can't even be shocked anymore.

- Shut up. Hurry up and roll the dice.

A-09 took a step back, clutching his watch. His brows furrowed.

- Number 2… I can't follow. That's all.

A-3, put his hands on the table.

- Number 5. 15 million.

[BETS Validated. 15 MILLION THE HIGHEST BET]

Djesone rigola

-25 millions

[UPDATE OF THE SUM, 25 MILLION]

A-03 Frowned and glared at him

-40 million, no, 50 million is better, with a smirk

A-04 remained silent, watching them without a glint in his eyes.

Djesone banged his fist on the table

-1 billion points, you can roll the die, setting A-03

-well I'll stop at 1 billion

[ROLL THE DICE]

I slowly raised the die.

His weight seemed heavier than before.

I stir it in my palm

Even my breathing seemed to slow down, everything was dense and tight on my momentum.

[Do you feel it, Ki-Moon? If you stop... everything collapses.]

Silence

CLANG.

The die rolled. The metallic sound echoed against the walls of the circle.

[ … 5...…6….. 6…6…6]

Hah

6?

6

I raised my head, almost surprised, a smile stuck on my lips, my eyes trembling, a few drops beading on my forehead

* Hah… is that a 6?

[IT'S A NEUTRAL GAME, RELOAD WEAPONS AND START A NEW BET.]

A-03 hesitated. His gaze swept around the table.

Then he pointed at me.

- You .

A-09 The fixed .

-What are you playing? It's a neutral game, damn it

[LET'S RESUME THE GAME.]

This time the compartment was unlucky enough to open and the revolvers were still sleeping, waiting for the next victim.

*[why did you roll a 6]

A-09 speaks to the Prime Minister

- number 5 for 10,000 pieces

* It wasn't intentional, it came about by pure chance, I wonder who is behind it

*[It's not me, Ki-Moon. I didn't do this. It's your game now. You take responsibility]

I stood there, motionless, the die still in my hand.

We'll see

[CHOOSE THE NUMBERS AND BETS.]

in a cold tone

The silence had turned into doubt.

And above us, I was sure That they would see me strip them.

Djesone slowly looked up at me.

- It's you, right? You're pulling the strings.

I didn't answer. My watch vibrated. He was burning with pain.

[ Ki-moon? ]

The faces around the circle stared.

In the pale light, their eyes seemed hollow, their mouths frozen in a mixture of hatred, malice, and despair.

And me…

I was more than sure I was on the right side of the game.

[OBSERVATION ROOM, BUYERS]

The scenery shifted.

Suddenly, the beating of hearts disappeared, replaced by that of technology.

Screens suspended from the ceiling displayed the numbers of the game, the faces of the candidates, the bets that scrolled at a frightening speed and each person held the reins of their boat facing a common enemy.

- What the hell is this? a deep voice whispered.

A man with a trimmed beard and an impeccable black suit stared at his screen.

- The odds are off, I should have ended it.

An elegant woman crossed her arms, a smirk on her face.

-Can be funny as perspectives

The other screen lit up, revealing the hidden images: Djesone, A-03, A-04, all frozen around the die.

Ki-moon spoke, his voice deep:

[LET THE GAME BEGIN]

Murmurs rose in the room.

Some shoppers leaned over their tablets, others nervously tapped their armrests.

- who enjoys playing such ridiculous tricks on us, the woman continued to herself, Kim Young… she has changed sides… she is risking a lot.

- Kim Young? repeated the bearded man next to him, a little lost.

She gave a cold little laugh.

- This kid is playing with fire.

Another, younger one, with a wild look, swirled a glass of wine.

- So let's add some fire. Let's increase the difficulty.

- It's risky.

- So what? The riskier it is, the higher the bets get... Or you no longer have access, you can join the players

he mocked.

- Connect the overload. Activate the cheat module, do some things.

- You just mean... to manipulate the dice, the young man breathed

A carnivorous smile crossed the buyer's face.

- Exactly. And where is that doll again? She's never there when you need her.

On the circle

A high-pitched whistling sound ran through my ears

[RULES CHANGES]

[BET: 5 Billion.]

[CHOOSE A NUMBER]

A murmur of amazement.

Even Djesone looked up, unable to believe it.

Five billion.

Pure madness.

What was going on?

"They're bluffing," A-04 said, his jaw clenched.

- No, gently, gently, breathed A-03. Number 3 for the bet.

- number 5, Djesone growled.

I watched them out of the corner of my eye, my brow furrowed, my expression thoughtful.

Something was wrong, a strange warmth.

It's going to go badly

My watch.

She blinked even more.

*what's going on?

*why did it change like that?

*answer me

*I thought you were helping me?

I looked up at the cameras

[ROLL KI-MOON, ROLL THE DICE.]

Ordered a voice

Silence

[ROLL THE DICE NOW]

I took a deep breath. My hands were shaking.

Everyone was staring at me.

Every look, every breath, was waiting.

I threw.

CLANG.

Rolling.

The metal hit the table, ricocheted, rolled, rolled again...

A shudder ran through the platform.

Djesone with a smile on his lips.

A dry, nervous smile, like that of men who knew everything already belonged to him.

My gaze lowered, my back bent, my two hands on the table, my eyes squinted, I sniffed as if I could no longer hold back my tears, I stared at this camera, the only one hidden in the woods, the only one that filmed my movements,........ and a smile appeared on my lips with tears... Tears of joy

[IT'S A NEUTRAL PARTY]

Haha

[..... 6. ]

Djesone shocked

- how does it go neutral.

A nervous laugh escaped Djesone.

I looked at my watch.

The same phenomenon.

The numbers appeared, line by line.

A magnificent spectacle

*[Hehehe… I can't believe it, you really made fun of me]

I raised my head, staring at the sky.

And for the first time, I had a feeling… not like the others, but like a lightness.

[FIFTH ROUND: FRANCE.]

The voice echoed, icy.

Viper slammed his fist on the ground.

George closed his eyes.

And me…

I was just waiting for the next one, the next trap that would make me earn more.

It was them.

That I should thank

OBSERVATION ROOM

- bastard

- Continue the overload for the last two turns. Then we will launch the "Rift" mode.

The steely-eyed woman raised an eyebrow.

- It annoys me, we have to solve the problem at the source

- Exactly. It's time to see who's playing us.

*[Hehehe… so, little king?, I was slightly wrong about you]
