So this is how it ends, Audrey thought.
Not at the claws of a ferocious beast or as fodder for a pack of wolves. No, by plunging into the darkness of a bottomless pit. Bones cracked on hard earth. Skull splintered on stone. Blood bursting from her splattered body.
Because Audrey didn't see a way out of this. A miracle, maybe. But she didn't believe in those.
She clung to the rope just by the tips of her fingers. Her shoulder blade protested against the strain of bearing her entire weight, her muscles raged like burning flames.
The wolves glared at her, over twenty of then now crowding the bridges overhead. They attacked no more. Why bother? The chasm might just as well claim her.
She heaved up one more time with all her might, reaching with her free arm for the nearest plank. Fingers grazed it but couldn't grasp.
Her grip on the rope faltered again
Audrey bit down on the panic roaring up her chest, wishing for one more chsnce. But her hands betrayed her.
